Disavow

Hello, my site was attacked by a competitor a while back. Over 1000 shit backlinks sent my way. I disavowed all of them but still have a few sites that backlinked and are now no longer up. Do these also hurt my SEO? Thanks.

Also if i do disavow these other links, do I also need to add these to my old disavow list (which as I said contains over 1000 bad links). So do I need to update the old list or can I just submit these 3-4 new bad links. Thanks again.

Image filenames

Hello, silly little question.

Actually I recently used an application on shopify to compress my images and I noticed that the compression added a long series of numbers to the filenames of all my images.

I'm aware that image names don't have a big SEO weight, but I'd like to know if it has a "negative" effect to have these series of numbers on all my images?

Example: blue-shirt-83274872348238832.jpg

Thank you.

Is there any harm in getting backlinks to a site that's "coming soon"?

I am going to launch a second website, under my real name, on a topic that I'm an actual expert in. Right now I have a have a "Coming Soon" notice (in a pretty design that is relevant to the topic of the it - it's not just black text on a white background!) on the site's homepage with links to the active social media accounts. I have a lot of content ready to go (at least 20,000 words, including two or three posts per category) but I need a little more time to play with the design of the site - I have a week off work in mid-March and I'm planning to use that week to get the design to a place where I feel comfortable "launching". Is there any danger in using HARO or other similar sites to get some backlinks to my homepage over the next month? I understand that some journalists might not want to use my contribution because the site isn't live yet, but for the ones who are open to saying, "Hannah from the soon-to-be-launched site XYZ Expert says...", is it kosher to build some of these links in the thirty days pre-launch?

Any way around KW Planner's query alternation?

Hi guys,

I work with keyword lists for several different markets. Very often I have to outsource keyword research for languages I don't speak. I then try to pull SVs to then let them get reviewed and mapped.

Since Google started changing keyword terms (often having the wrong user intent) this became a big problem. I can't map SVs to the original list as easy and a big amount of keywords just becomes useless.

I was wondering if there are any other options? I've been thinking of moving to SEMRush but their database isn't sufficient enough for many smaller markets or niche topics.

Interested in any suggestions or workarounds.

Best,

Ox

Competitors have a very ugly website with bad UX but still ranks on the first page

Hey, awesome r/SEO folks out there!

My experience as new to SEO is very interesting so far. I started learning and applying SEO just 6 months ago when the client asked to do so.

Last year I redesigned my client's old flash website into a modern one with great UI and UX practices. Before this, the domain was down for many years since the web developer closed the business and then later domain was let free.

I knew that the competitor's website was very old, slow loading, lots of performance issues, not responsive blah blah but surprisingly still outranks mine. Interestingly mine sits on the 3-4th page.

I have not put enough content as the client was not interested in that. In addition, all of the competitor's websites didn't have any content, just a heading and a couple of lines. However I made sure all the pages had minimum contents, title, meta, h1,p, alt-text, all were fine. And I hoped that with a very solid technical SEO and okayish on-site SEO, I could easily rank on top organically.

In the first few months, I saw the website showing up on the first page and on GMB listing too but it started to draw back and now the keyword with most impressions sits on 15th position, average ctr was 0.8% and even worse - the average position: 36.

This surprised me a lot and so will you if you see the competitor's website. I felt how come Google does this as I learned and applied most of the SEO from Google Webmasters Starting Guide. Later I came to know about backlinks and when I checked, interestingly my domain has got just 51 backlinks(21% dofollow) and my competitors have got 85 backlinks(89% dofollow). In addition, my Domain Rating is 0 while competitor has 3+ (Source: Ahref)

I now understand that's where competitor outranks but this one made me realize the power of Backlinks! While google always educates about technical and on-site SEO, it's off-site that eventually matters though the former may matter in a very competitive environment.

So the search for backlinks begins...

What could increase Domain Authority? Are DA and DR the same? In this scenario, are there any other means for me to outrank other than link building? Let me know your comments in comments :)

What am I doing right? 1 page = 41% of total traffic.

As the title states, I'm trying to figure out why one of my page is going great. It accounts for roughly 40% of the total traffic my website received.
I did a quick Google search of the page title and found that it ranks on the second position for the Long tail keyword.
Is there anything else I can check to see why it's performing well and perhaps replicate whatever's happening.

Easily removing links to vendor [WP]

Long story short is one of my affiliate accounts was terminated due to certain claims I was making about products. The company doesn't have a problem with reactivating my account as long as I remove their links and create compliant content. In the short term I want to remove all links to this particular vendor. Is SEO even worth doing as a job?

My question is more so, why would it not be ideal to enter an SEO/digital marketing career path in 2020?

I already have an answer in my head, but from being on this subreddit for some time, I can see the general consensus here is that there is a lot of distaste for SEO amongst people who do it for a living.

This sub-reddit seems to be dominated by experienced people in the industry who don't necessarily always agree with new people coming onto the block.

A lot of the posts and comments carry different strokes, where some things work for some people, people complaining about the algorithm changes, the fundamentals of SEO and how backlinks are the only important thing and content doesn't matter.

It's just a very disheartening place for new people who have an interest in SEO, which leads me to wonder why people do it for work and continue to do it if they're unhappy being in a largely 'thankless' job.

Will having the .com to a website help it at all?

I'm in a bit of a situation here. I have a pretty big recipe website and one day a friend reached out to me showing me a screenshot of the .com (it's a .co) asking what happened. This motivated me to email the owner of that website. The website has nothing on it, all the links are broken.

He's willing to let go of it for $5,000 but he's also including 5 other domains in the same category that are pretty good (4 of them .co.uk). The guy sold a business for $50m last year, he's definitely not willing to negotiate or anything. I think he's just trying to get out of this space that he was in before all that.

I just don't know what to do here. Would the .com help me at all with SEO?

Another thing is that 2 of the domains pertain to an already established business in the UK. Wondering if I could reach out to them and recover some of the cost. You think it's worth contacting them before? He gave me a week to decide.

SEO Impact by changing registrar or hosting ?

Hello,

I am curious if there is any impact in SEO if you change your domain registrar such as transferring from Name.com to GoDaddy.com as an example.

Similarly if you transfer your hosting from GoDaddy to Name.com , would it have any impact ?

P.S above both hosts/registrars are an example so assume both registrars/hosts are top tiers

Launched a Free Tool For SEOs and solo bloggers in Beta. Help us with your feedback.

Hi. We have launched our content tool influrocket in beta mode (all features are currently free). Vision is to help users with creating content with the help of this tool. Work is already underway to add many more features to help content creation with SEO support (like support for meta tags, social media integration, link building, advanced keyword research etc.)

As keyword research is the most crucial part of creating a content that can potentially rank for a keyword, we've started with that functionality. I know there are numerous tools providing similar services and it's a competitive space. However, I feel that those tools are for people with some SEO expertise (like understanding KD, CPC and multiple other KPIs). This tool is designed to 1. Generate long tail keyword ideas, 2. Filter and save keywords 3. Plan content using keywords and 4. Build influence for the site. Points 3 and 4 are still work in progress.

Please check out the tool influrocket and let us know your thoughts and suggestions. Happy weekend!

Multiple H1 tags inside a hero slider.

Im planning to build a website which has a big hero slider on the top of homepage. There will be 2-3 slides. Each will have a heading and a subheading.

I usually use a h1 tag for the heading on the mane page but in this case there are multiple headings.

Or should i remove h1 tags from the slider and place the h1 tag somewhere else on the page?

After a year and a half, we are not getting the results!

Hey there,

I'm not here to complain. Instead, I just want your opinion.

A year and a half ago, I started working on SEO for Megalux LED Display in Spain. Our competition was crushing us with very important keywords such as "pantallas LED", "pantallas publicitarias", "pantallas LED publicitarias", "venta de pantallas LED", and several others.

What I did was writing a lot of quality content, pay for guest posts with links on popular websites in Spain, optimize the site as much as I could, create landing pages, including keywords in the copy, and a few more things. I am not a technical SEO professional, so I am limited on the *very* technical side of things.

While we got very interesting results for "pantallas publicitarias", which now we rank as 2nd, we are doing poorly with our top priority keyword, which is "pantallas LED". Our competition is driving 10x more traffic than us just with this keyword.

Yes, I think that this is not enough information to provide any sort of advice but I am kind of desperate now. A few months ago, we were 3rd with "pantallas LED" but progress went away and after a few weeks of success, we went back to the second page.

Thanks!

Combining pages that rank well in organic listings

Hi,

We have many pages that rank well in the organic listings, but we want to combine some of these pages to make the browsing experience easier. For example, we sell whiteboards, and we have the main whiteboards page, plus a page for magnetic whiteboards and a page for non-magnetic whiteboards. All of these pages rank well for their own individual keywords. If we were to combine these three pages into one page, do you think google would still rank that one page for all three of these different keywords?

Guest Posting Is Dead

Guest posting is dead, SEO is dead... usual stuff.

On 26 February searchenginejournal posted another (rubbish?) article about a website being penalised for unnatural outbound links and on the forums people are discussing if guest posting is dead already.

Firstly, google have been cracking down on the guest post farms for some time and secondly, just because a site got penalised it doesn't mean that guest posting is dead.

Quality and relevant guest posts still work like a charm if done properly.

hired a guy on Upwork to do my SEO. I have no experience in SEO, so I have no idea what to look for in terms of results/ expectations! Help!

He’s been at it for about a month and sends me weekly reports that shows my google ranking very slowly going up on 5 of the 10 keywords (more specific ones- broad ones I am still not in the top 500). He also sends me reports about photo linking, micro blogging, and social bookmarking... a few other things, too. Because I have zero frame of reference, I’m hoping you guys might be able to help me. I don’t have time to learn SEO, but I also don’t want to keep giving money to someone if I don’t know if it’s working? What expectations should I have? Hosting changed - Website not appearing in search results

I changed my hosting a month before. There were only 2 blogs so we just rewrote it on the new host.

Before even the tags got indexed but in the new hosting, other than the home page no other pages are appearing in SERP.

Search console message - Indexed but not submitted in sitemap.

Do you think I did anything wrong while changing the host?

Does disavowing backlinks even matter anymore for Google?

I understood that disavowing spammy backlinks was important for Google rankings in certain cases.

Now I no longer even find the disavow tool in Google Webmaster Tools and I wonder if it must be irrelevant to Google rankings now? Are there any other tools available for this?

I'm suspecting that my site may have an issue with malicious spammy backlinks, despite being alongside some very good backlinks too.

The only way I can access it is going to the old dashboard, checking an old message where I updated the disavow file and accessing it via there.

Expired/Deleted Domains & SEO

Im aware that expired domains may boost SEO and skip the sandbox phase.

I plan on making a new website and I been looking for expired domains . The ones I found with the exact phrase i was looking for, have no authorirty, no backlinks and Im pretty sure they are deleted (as in not in auction) Do these type of expired domains have any value? or is it the same as buying a brand new domain?

Does the domain have to be in auction or have backlinks or authority to even be worth buying?

Im specifically looking to skip the sandbox phase, i will work on authority and backlinks myself.

Im not using it to redirect or do anything sketch. I wanna build a website on it.

What's the average amount of clicks per post on your clients' GMB listings?

Sort of piggybacking off of someone else's post that mentioned how Google posts don't have an impact on local search results.

I know we've all read articles that explain how important it is to post frequently on Google My Business. I have to agree with the sentiment that GMB posts don't appear do much for a client. I work with a lot of local businesses. Even the ones that are ranking high for all their priority keywords and get good brand traffic don't have high engagement on GMB.

I'll be honest, I've never searched for a business and clicked on their latest GMB post. The data from all the clients I work with also supports the argument that apparently no one else does either. Right now, the data is showing me that the combined average is 10 clicks per post for the clients I work with.

What are the metrics for your clients?

Did Google's Keyword Planner Change? Broad terms to generate keyword ideas are generating "related queries".

I haven't done a deep dive on keywords in a year (say Jan 2019). However, I was jumping back in and Google's Keyword Planner is giving me single-result for broad and mid-tail keywords. I'm in the "generate ideas" and some terms (outside my verticals) will automatically generate 900 ideas. Did something change?

Local Search is the Worst it has Been in Years

For all this talk about AI and natural language processing updates in the algorithm, I would argue that local search hasn't been as bad as this in a very long time, particularly in GMB.

Based on the past four months of data, I've found that the following, in this order, are the strongest factors affecting local pack/maps/Google My Business ranking:

1) A keyword rich business name (by FAR the most important factor at the moment)

2) Proximity to the city center

Factors that decidedly do not matter/have no discernible impact in GMB rankings:

1) Review count or average (though this may improve engagement, CTR). This, of course, if you're lucky enough to have Google show your review average AT ALL.

2) Age of the GMB profile

3) Google Posts

4) Literally anything else we've tried.

The 4-10 aren't much better. They are dominated by directories, large national players, and SPAM.

What are you guys doing right now in local to combat this? Should I join the dark side? It's been nearly a full quarter of this nonsense. The cynical side of me wants to think this garbage is about pushing people into Google Guarantee or Paid, but maybe I'm giving Google too much credit.

I'm literally at a point where I'm considering telling an established brand to rename their GMB profile to "Money Keyword in Geo" because that's what Google rewards right now. Any thoughts? What can we do that is plausibly white hat here?

Change My Slug?

Hi all, I'm afraid I'm a bit of a newbie looking for some advice so please excuse my lack of understanding. My business provides a mobile service throughout the county. My site has been up for about 18 months and I'm now trying to improve my search position. The home page slug format is town-service-mobile-home. I'm thinking of changing it to county-town-service-mobile-home to hopefully improve my rating when people search based on the county name. I'm not mentioning which county and town names but I hope that makes sense.

I'm wondering: 1. Should I change the slug? Will this help my search position? 2. If I change the slug I believe Google may 'loose' my site. Is that right? I'm not sure how they use slugs 3. If I do change my slug should I do it for all pages on the site? 4. What do I need to do to make sure Google doesn't 'loose' my site? What's the best process?

Lots of questions I'm afraid but would really appreciate any advice you guys could give me. Many thanks in advance, BDB

Anyone else take a big hit to DA?

Just recently took a huge hit to our DA, halving it to be exact. Has anyone else seen such a sharp drop for them also recently? We have not done anything differently, if anything, our organic keyword results went up from 771 keywords to 1,600 keywords in the last month and we began to gain traffic at great rates. Dont understand what happened, the only thing that might be bad is we lost about 30 more backlinks then we gained this last month but still does that warrant for a halving of our DA that was over 35 last month?

Need opinion on SEO relevance between domain name and company name - and the impact in organic with any change to it.

Gonna use fictional name for the sake of it here.

Let's say the company is called "boom" and our domain name is called "grabboom.com". We obviously rank with all search terms related to grabboom and boom at the same time, but would be the impact of we change our company to "grabboom" as well? How would it influence the search and potentially the traffic? How would changing the name to Boom XXL affect us?

Overall it's a question that mainly discusses different name for a domain and the company. And impact of merging it to be the same.

Edit: the name of the company is not a noun or a verb. It's a made up word.

FREE WordPress Plugin for Linkbuilding (first 100 beta testers have free lifetime access)

If you have a WordPress site and you do any kind of content marketing, I have a free plugin that I built to help with linkbuilding.

Basically you put this thing on your site and people can pitch links to your content without going through your email inbox. All you have to do is look at their suggested change and accept or deny it. If you accept the change, their link will be added to your content under the appropriate anchor text. If you deny the change, nothing happens.

Why? Because it keeps your content fresh and external links are good for SEO (so long as they are quality... which will be up to your own discretion).

Totally new, totally low key, and ready to be tested.

If you want to test the plugin, shoot me a DM! And if you have non-douchey questions, you can also shoot me a DM :)

And for all those people tempted to say, "Sounds like a scam," keep your comments to yourself. I worked hard on this thing and don't need or want non-constructive criticism (but CONSTRUCTIVE criticism is super appreciated!) .

Can I post similar content multiple times on my site?

Hey all,

I'm a total noob when it comes to SEO and specifically copywriting for SEO. One thing that came to me this morning is that I'm not sure if I can repost similar content with minor alterations on my website, or if that will hurt my search engine rankings.

Problem:

I'll write one article that centers around a specific keyword.

The keyword has multiple "variants" but I have no way to cram them all into the same article.

Solution I'm considering:

Take the same article and repost it, substituting keyword 1 for keyword 2 etc.

In practice that might lead to having the same article 3 times with some of the words substituted for other ones.

Hope it's clear from my explanation what I'm after.

Thoughts?

Any way to return all keyword results in Keyword Planner? Without Google removing similar results.

Keyword Planner seems to remove similar results when using historical metrics, for example I enter a list of 500 unique keywords and only 389 return, I beleive google groups similar such as "dentist in new york" & "New your dentists".

I need the exact data, any ways to get around this?

Local SEO - Help ranking businesses in top 3 maps without a website

Hey SEO people!

I'm struggling to rank a Google My Business to get in more areas for keywords (No website)

I've got the business listed on 50 high quality citations such as truelocal, yelp, foursquare, bing however

When I got the citations published I chose not to reveal the full adress because I don't want the full adress to be shown - so I only put the suburb in? - Could this be impacting Local SEO performance?

Also, I'm on the fence whether to buy a "Google Map Stack" + "Google Map CItations"

Has anyone tried Google Map Stacking and seen good results?

I can't seem to find anywhere someone showing results before and after, all they show is a convoluted process on how it's done.

Should I be worried about thin content?

My clients has a photography website and other than a couple of main menu pages he only has portfolio of more than 500 customers on the website.

He has no content but just the images on each portfolio page which leads to thin content, missing h1, missing description and all other types of content issues.

Should I be worried about it? Client wouldn't be interested in putting unnecessary content on the website. Does it affect SEO of the website?

Play Store SEO: Sharp ranking drop for most of our keywords?

Our game lost most of the keywords it was ranking for and don't really understand why. Did we get kinda banned? We haven't changed our app description and title and I'm not aware of any algorithm update.

Changes we did:

- Full UI revamp of the app

Did anyone experience something like this? What could be the reason? Thanks so much for the help.

What framework do you use to find your niche?

Hi guys,

Just thought i would lay out the framework i have put in place for niche hunting and see what you guys think. Any suggestions on anything i should avoid spending time on/focus more on, would be amazing to get some feedback!

Here is my first round thought process: 1) Choose a general theme

Come up with sub topics for the general theme (eg, TVs —> Samsung TVs) Look for some long tailed searches within each sub topic (use Answerthepublic to find more) Have a look through terms an authority site is ranking for to see other related terms (using SEMrush) Collect these ideas in a mindmap to visualise better and capture information 2) Monetisation

What are the current ways of monetising the niche? Do the numbers add up? Ie, look at traffic volumes for keywords relating to a sub topic, take into account only a small number will convert into a sale later on, would affiliate revenue bring in enough here? Some intuition and guestimation required here 3) Traffic flows

Find out the volume of traffic flows for important keywords relating to each sub topic Cut out any sub topic that appears to have generally low search volumes 4) Competition

Does it appear to be a saturated niche? Look at the websites ranking for ‘less competitive search terms’, say below 1,000 searches per month. Are you realistically gonna be able to compete with them – check the domain authority for any site you don’t recognise. 5) Value adding – What can you bring to the area to improve it?

Better information? Better website layout?

What are backlinks?

Me, a complete newbie to SEO, is trying to make backlinks for a site I'm told to make on an internship. The mentor guy at internship told me to search "reply to post" site:.edu, site:edu "by wordpress" "Leave a Reply" on Google, but the sites keep my anchor tag containing comment on moderation. Site I am working on has very low DA/PA, and very small no. of backlinks. What to do and how to improve DA/PA and no. of backlinks?

Looking for "another" tool that checks the word count of pages in in the SERP without visiting each site manually

I have used the tools in Ahrefs and SEMrush that check the word counts of the pages in the top 10 results and gives an average word count without having to open each site and manually counting words on each page. Know of anything else that does something similar?
