Which CMS is the most SEO-friendly?

Hey guys! Hope you’re doing well this Tuesday. We have a question for you: which CMS, according to your experience, is the most SEO-friendly?

We compared five CMS according to the W3Techs yearly report (Market share yearly trends for content management systems) and analyzed them from the SEO perspective. Surely, the most popular CMS doesn't mean the most SEO-friendly, but we thought this comparison might be helpful to those, who are still in doubt about which CMS to choose. So this is what we got:

WordPress

Pros:

• Easy for beginners
• Contains basic SEO features (out of the box)
• Offers many plugins
• Simple website structure
• Customizable themes
• Responsive themes
• Customizable URLs
• Out-of-the-box blog option

Cons:

• Doesn’t host your website
• Lack of advanced SEO features (out of the box)
• Limited scalability
• Does not provide an SSL certificate (OOTB)
• You can’t generate XML sitemaps automatically.
• Too many plugins will slow the website down
• You can’t generate robots.txt files (OOTB)

Verdict: Good for multi-purpose small and medium sites.

Shopify

Pros:

• Hosts your website
• Easy for beginners
• Contains basic SEO features(out of the box)
• Contains advanced SEO features (out of the box)
• Offers many plugins
• Simple website structure
• Good scalability
• Responsive themes
• Customizable URLs
• Ability to set up 301 redirects
• Provides an SSL certificate

Cons:

• Themes tend to lack customization features
• Website will not get indexed unless you purchase a paid plan
• There is no out-of-the-box blog option
• Non-editable robots.txt and sitemap files

Verdict: Good for small and medium e-commerce sites.

Joomla!

Pros:

• Contains basic SEO features(out of the box)
• Contains advanced SEO features (out of the box)
• Offers many plugins
• Great architecture (was build for large sites)
• Simple website structure
• Good scalability
• Customizable themes
• Customizable URLs
• Out-of-the-box blog option
• Ability to set up 301 redirects
• Provides an SSL certificate
• Generates XML sitemaps automatically
• You can create robots.txt files (out of the box)

Cons:

• May be difficult for beginners
• Lack of responsive themes (out of the box)

Verdict: Good for multi-purpose large-scale sites

Squarespace

Pros:

• Hosts your website
• Easy for beginners
• Contains basic SEO features(out of the box)
• Simple website structure
• Responsive themes
• Customizable URLs
• Out-of-the-box blog option
• Ability to set up 301 redirects
• Provides an SSL certificate
• You can create robots.txt files (out of the box)

Cons:

• Lack of advanced SEO features
• Doesn’t support plugins
• Lack of scalability
• Themes tend to lack customization features
• E-commerce templates may not include all the needed structured data.
• Sitemap and robots.txt are not editable

Verdict: Good for solopreneurs, portfolios, art, and photography sites.

Wix

Pros:

• Hosts your website
• Easy for beginners
• Contains basic SEO features(out of the box)
• Offers many plugins
• Simple website structure
• Out-of-the-box blog option
• Ability to set up 301 redirects
• Provides an SSL certificate
• You can create robots.txt and sitemap files (out of the box)

Cons:

• Not all themes are responsive
• Lack of scalability
• Wix websites often experience crawling issues
• Lack of advanced SEO features (out of the box)
• Not fully customizable themes
• Themes are not always responsive (especially tablets)
• Wix adds extra attributes to your URL
• Wix renames image files (not ideal for those of you who are planning to rely on image search)
• You can’t edit XML sitemap.

Verdict: Good for multi-purpose, small-scale sites
