Reddit Just Landed Me My Next Client

Yes, you read that 100% right. Reddit the website where people live to troll and post daily dog memes just helped me land my next SEO client. It didn't come directly from Reddit; however, I had been talking to a cleaning company for quite some time now and they were on the fence about purchasing my SEO services on a month to month basis. This conversation had been going on for a few months now and honestly I was questioning if they were just being too nice to say no.

I decided to look through Reddit to see if anyone else had been in a similar situation. I came across some post in a few digital marketing subs and saw many mentions of case studies and how they could be used to convert sales. Eventually I decided I would make a post of my own asking about the efficiency of this method and how to carry it out. Many people confirmed the effectiveness of case studies within their own SEO agencies and I even had someone go as far as messaging me individually sending past case studies that they had used in their sales process. I decided to try this method and I think it was just enough to put the client over that tipping point as none of the prior things I had shown them or talked about seem to interest them enough. So I guess the moral of the story is there are people on Reddit who are actually here to help and because of them I now have a new SEO client starting tomorrow.

Question about buying sites for backlinking

Hello there reddit members :)

I'm currently going through a slow backlinking acquisition campaign for my site.

I noticed that another way to get backlinks is to buy new sites from "Auction sites", some of them in my same niche are very cheap and between 2-4 months old.

Is it safe for me to buy these sites to link to my main site? Should I watch out for anything when I'm buying these kinds of sites?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Competitor backlink profile question

Looking for some quick advice if possible please. I have been told to analyse the backlink profiles of our competition and aim to get every backlink possible for our site.

Our fiercest competitor has links in their backline profile that I personally believe to be spammy for example worldwidetopsite.com who offer to add a link to your site for a low fee. Checking using the moz domain tool though this site has a 67 DA and a surprisingly low spam score of 9%.

So the question is do I do as instructed and get this same backlink for our site as our competitor and move on or disagree that buying these links could be more harmful in the future?

[Redirection loop] Are incorrect Hreflang tags causing redirection loops on my website?

Brazil url of website cant be reached due to too many redirects. Indeed console shows that it is a redirect loop.

Checking the html i notice that hreflang for brazil is set to a default international url. (it should be the portuguese language version)

My question is, how is this causing the redirection loop exactly behind the scene? Whats the logic here?

Why not just redirect once to the incorrect url and be done with it? why redirect again and again when searched from brazil?

If this isnt the issue, please correct me~

What type of practice website should I make?

Backstory: I decided to make a website with comedic articles(like Cracked) and while learning how to make a website I discovered SEO and became obsessed lol. I'm now doing a SEO course and I want to have a practice website to test out all the stuff I'm learning.

The problem: I'm wondering if I should just stick to the comedy articles website or start a website about a topic that has a wider audience and that I can potentially sell products on. It seems that if I want to get hired as an SEO I would need experience in ranking websites and conversions. With a comedy website idk what products I could sell lol. What do ya'll think?

Does anyone feel that SEO make websites look ugly and cringey?

Sometimes, I would occasionally come across some eCommerce sites that look very obviously that they are going heavy on SEO strategy.

They usually have paragraphs of text near the top of the page (probably below the hero banner).
Let's say they're selling bathroom equipment. So, on their home page, the text would go :

"Welcome to Portland's biggest selection of bathroom equipment. Here, we offer a wide range of bathroom equipment from bathroom toilet dispensers, bathroom showerheads, bathroom floor tiles to bathroom shelf racks and bathroom towel hangers. Because we offer such a wide range of bathroom equipment, you'll be sure to find the bathroom equipment of your choice for your bathroom"

Anchor text for interbal linking vs external linking.

Hey everyone, here's something I'm confused about.

Let's say I use an anchor text "website development company" on my website for internal linking. Is it okay to add external links to the same anchor text on a different as well? Having exact anchor text on different pages, one linking to an internal page and one linking to an external page, is not going to be an issue, right?

I remember reading something of this sort but I can confirm if it's true or not.

Can any websites tell me the top searched keywords or tails in my niche?

All the websites I've found so far tell me what are ours and our competitors top search keywords are however, I would like to know what the top keywords are in our industry so I can add them in our SEO.

For example, we sell a type of fertiliser and an SEO auditor told us that "avocado growth" has 10k searches a month and why aren't we using it... I had no idea because no website had ever told me that was being search for. That was a tail which our competitors nor I use however, has a high click rate within our industry.

Does a robots meta tag of "nofollow" eliminate all the SEO value of the links on the page, even if the links aren't individually labeled as "nofollow"?

For example, the following seems to be a link that does pass PageRank to the linked domain:

<a href="http://www.example.com">click here</a>

However, if that link appears on a page that has this metatag ...

<meta name="robots" content="nofollow">

... does that metatag turn the link into a no-follow link that yields no SEO value to example.com?

Blog Post Updates vs Keyword Blog Posts

Hey guys, first time posting here!

I'm running into a potential keyword cannibalization issue on my site.

I create weekly blog posts that serve as more of an update on what the company has been up to, but also offer sales links.

I also have a bunch of product pages that I'm trying to rank for, for specific keywords.

When I go to write the weekly blog post update, I have the option of optimizing it for keywords in Yoast (I use WordPress). However, any of the keywords I would choose, that the blog post covers, are keywords I already may try to rank for on the product pages, or be ranking already.

I feel as though I may be missing an opportunity to rank my blog posts if I don't optimize my blog post updates for keywords. They offer a lot of value and see solid traffic.

Is it a bad idea to try to rank for the same keywords I may have on other pages of my site in these blog posts? Should I disregard any keyword optimization for these blog posts entirely and just keep it to the product landing pages?

If anyone has run into this, I'm curious to hear your thoughts!

The Truth About Ranking Websites

Hello SEO community

Now the advice I'm going to share with you may sound very obvious; however, it's important to keep this in mind when doing SEO for your business or a potential clients business because otherwise it will be very easy to get discouraged. I will also say I'm no SEO guru but I have had both current clients and other websites rank on the first page of Google in the past so take my advice however serious you would like.

The advice is that it'll take more effort to rank from the 2nd page of Google to the 1st than it will to rank from the 10th page to the 4th. Now the reason being is that normally when you get closer to the top of a ranking system you're going to find other companies who also focus on SEO; whereas, everybody from the 4th page on either isn't focused on ranking for those keywords or just isn't focused on their SEO strategy making it much easier to pass them with the slightest of effort. Like I said to many people this will sound very obvious, but at the same time I've also seen many individuals both clients and experts alike become very frustrated when their site was climbing at such fast speeds only to be halted or slowed on the second or first page. Remember SEO is the long game and with more and more people focusing on adapting their digital strategies it will take time and resources to provide a quality SEO strategy. Hopefully this messaged helped somebody out there but just keep pushing along

Does it make sense to do SEO for this site?

I am asked to do an SEO audit for a big brand that makes all kinds of tools. They want their site and products to do better in Google and asked me to figure out what to do.

I got a little stuck, because for all of their products (thousands) they have product pages. But the 'add to cart' button is changed to 'Buy on ***.com'. They outsourced their sales to large retailer who sells all their products. They don't actually sell or ship products themselves to consumers.

My question is, does it even make sense to do SEO for their product pages? They are just like any other Ecommerce, but the only difference is that the product pages link to another ecommerce where you can actually buy the product.

Will Google rank these product pages in the first place, knowing you can't actually buy the product on this site?

The product pages do actually automatically pull all reviews from the outsourced selling ecommerce site.

Please advise. Thank you.

How frowned upon would this use of AJAX be?

Say I run a strictly educational website in which I am trying to push the specific term "arithmetic" instead of "math" which is the more popularly used term. Obviously, I want to rank for all terms related to "math" as those are the keywords with volume that reach the target I am trying to educate to use the word "arithmetic" instead.

Would the following be extremely frowned upon and leave me in grave danger of a penalty?

Build content on my site, on page load, that is clearly geared towards terms related to "math" but after page load, AJAX in a keyword replace and change all instances of the word "math" with the word "arithmetic" but all of the other content would remain the same.

This would ensure that search engines can understand my content is "math" related while also not using that term on my page since my educational website is trying to use the word "arithmetic" as the "correct alternative".

My first thought is - this has to be cloaking and I could definitely be penalized for this.

Second thought is - as long as the content is still informative and targeted at the right user, there is no bait and switch in play. It is just using the more "appropriate" term as deemed by that website.

Thoughts?

(obviously this is not for the ever-elusive math/arithmetic niche. just an example)

Changes in the spelling of the canonical tag on the catalog pagination pages

Today I want to talk about the canonical tag on directory pagination

I especially want to discuss the point:

Use URLs correctly

  • Give each page a unique URL. For example, include a query parameter since URLs in the pagination sequence are treated by Google as separate pages. ? page = n
  • Do not use the first page of a page sequence as a canonical page. Instead, give each page its own canonical URL.

That is, Google says not to put the canonical tag on pagination pages 2 and beyond.

An interesting change, actually. But it does not negate one thing - cannibalization.

When you have a catalog, then, for example, in the category "TVs" you have 100,500 pagination pages. This means that the main key "TV" is responsible for 100,500 pages. Which is the relevant key?

For this, the canonical tag was previously put on the first page of the pagination, the main TV catalog. Now Google says to cancel it. This will lead to the fact that he himself will choose the relevant page, which means there will be errors - especially when you optimize the first page of the listing.

301'ing a bunch of domains with strong, relevant backlinks to a single authority site

Let's say I have an authority site already in a particular niche.

I own about 5 or 6 much smaller sites, but each one has a powerful, relevant backlink that my authority site lacks.

I 301 all of those individual domains to my main authority domain, move each respective article to the main site and 301 them correctly.

So now the authority site has a much stronger domain authority.

Does this sound like a safe and viable strategy? Seems foolish to me to put time and money into these smaller sites, when they could potentially combine to make my main site much more valuable.

But I don't know if there are any SEO implications (for the main site) in doing this.

I know YouTube creates automatic subtitles, but if I re-write them for accuracy, would that help with SEO?

Couldn't people just theoretically write whatever they want in the subtitles for SEO rankings, or is Google smarter than that?

Advice sought - a friend has a lot of locally targeted pages on his site for the service he provides...

and a lot of them are the same more or less...think... "Electrician in Marysville" or "Electrician Mount Cooper"

Each page has external links and the SEO score is good on the majority...(WordPress) pages are formatted just like an article and each attempts to answer commonly asked questions about the service.

He's not doing badly...his site pops up around 2nd to 8th depending on how competitive each suburb is for his service.

He's covering a lot of Australia though as he's actually a sort of'agent' for service providers...(he's also a service provider himself though)

Question is...is there anything in particular he could do to improve his ranking? Any technical stuff? Obviously the content needs improving but it's not THAT bad...just not great.

Thanks!

Historical search data

Hi all!

I am hoping that the community can nudge me in the right direction to find the historical data for search volumes of keywords.

I am tasked with optimising a website that mainly deals in sectors that have been largely shut down over the pandemic, thus no one has been searching and that has impacted the average search volume (in many cases, SEMRush shows terms as 0). Without upgrading to the Guru plan (because budget), is there any way of finding such historical data - i.e. what the average search volume for a term was back in March 2020 before the world went into hibernation? :-)

Internal Linking priorities

So, I have a question when it comes to prioritizing a new website with a bad/non-existent link structure. I know internal linking is important for SEO. I got two options here, but I want to know your opinion on what's best practice. Let's say we have a 60-page website with 6 categories.

  1. Start writing content for all these pages and use internal linking in the content itself.
  2. Write small texts in which I use internal links. (which afterward I can expand to good SEO content)

Important to know is that I only have an x amount of time for each site to optimize. Is it worth it to spend a couple of hours just writing a small text with internal links for a website, or should I just write content for the long run? We are also aiming for short-term results here.

Love to hear all your opinions.

Full time SEO for family business

So I graduated recently with a marketing diploma. I really like SEO and I would love to work at my family business. My family sells mostly offline but is slowly building an e-commerce website. Is it possible to work on that online store full time. I mean blogging, optimizing pages SEO wise, etc.? I will most likely take a while to get more traffic so that might be a stressful period. But hopefully after that we will sell enough online to get a good income out of it for me.

It sounds not appealing to do the same work for an agency or other company after graduating. Although I would have a higher income in the beginning, I would much rather build my family business grow online.

Does this sounds like a good full time starters job?

Does Anybody Read Case Studies?

A friend of mine in the digital marketing space and I were catching up and he mentioned that he had been working on a case study based on his most recent client. Now normally when we talk I don't really care much as he does his own thing and I do mine with every now and then an idea passing between the two of us, but it struck me that despite writing hundreds of monthly reports for clients I've never actually written or released any case studies. I mean I've had success before with my own clients ranking on the first page or even helping other agencies out with SEO in order to produce positive results for them; however, a big part of me always felt that no matter how great the results nobody really looked through case studies or even they did chances are it was another SEO expert or enthusiast. So I wanted to know has anybody actually seen any positive results or feedback from case studies that lead to additional clients? I don't want anybody in here who does write case studies to feel they are useless I personally just haven't tried it because I feel as though if I don't read them who does but once again this could be a very small minded perspective.

Outdated Website

Is there a way to have Google re-index a website so that my customer's information no longer appears on Google searches pertaining to said website?

More context: I am working with a dentist who has moved practices. We've built his new website and are working on SEO. So far everything is going according to plan with keywords and other basic SEO stuff, but his old practice is holding us up with SEO performance. We've made sure their developers have scrubbed the site clean of his information, so this seems to be an issue with site indexing, unless I'm missing something here? Hope to gather some thoughts on this. Thanks in advance.

Articles Rank Well, But For Short Time Only. Why Is That?

I'm publishing a few articles a day on my website. They're well-written, 1000-2000 words long. Some of them never rank, but many articles make it to the top 10, often top 3 in Google.

They stay on the top for a short period of time, let's say one to 3 months. After that, they gradually drop (from position 3 to position 6, then to 8, then to 15...) or they just vanish from search results. You know, today you're on the first page, tomorrow you can't find your article in the top 100.

I never created any backlink for this website. However, I earned a few links from very quality sites and many many links from suspicious sites like Blogspot blogs and some random domain names that contain nothing but a long list of backlinks to random websites. I never bothered to disavow them in the hope that Google knows what's going on and won't hurt me for bad links that somebody is creating.

What could be the reason for losing my rankings after some time? This is what comes to my mind -

  • Sites with stronger backlink profiles publish content on the same subjects after me and they simply outrank me.
  • Some issues with my site?

  • Relevancy? Not sure if Google nowadays considers articles relevant just for short time and puts on the top fresh articles from other sites, and pushes older articles down.

Did you notice anything similar with your sites? Is there a solution?

Google My Buisness locations

The company I work for has a brand which is a collective of clinics across the UK which offer a specific treatment. These clinics are all independent buisneses, with their own GMB pages, but we have a GMB for this brand too.

Currently, we have one GMB page called "X Clinics" that is just UK wide, no addresses. This way it doesn't interfere with any of their GMB pages. If someone clicks through to the website, they can then see the list of clinic locations.

Obviously it would be preferable to have the clinics listed, but we'd need six separate pages, called "X Clinics - Location A" "X Clinics - Location B". I understand I can do this as a grouped account.

My questions are:

Would this be better for SEO? Including Local SEO?

Would I lose any SEO I have from our current, popular GMB?

Would it interfere with any of the clinics' main pages? None of them have the same name as our brand

Please let me know if there's something wrong with my collection~ Thanks a lot!!!

I'm a small business owner and I've hired an SEO expert to help me back in January. My site originally was not indexing on Google so I essentially I started with 0 uniques a month.

The expert I hired is doing a great job and this month we are likely to 1,000+ uniques for the month and we have had consistent month over month increases.

My question is - what is conversion typically like from visitors to closed business on a high level? I haven't closed any business from these efforts yet (and wasn't necessarily expecting to) and I'm wondering, could I build out a website that has great SEO and tens of thousands of visitors each month and no new business closed? Is this a common scenario in the SEO business? i.e. great numbers and no revenue to back it up?

FAQ Realisation...

I think I'm late to the party here, but I'm starting to think FAQ page's are pretty useless for the SEO value I'm going after...

I'm trying to get some snippets and organic traffic by answering frequently asked questions within my industry, and the plan was to load up these 40 high traffic questions with strong answers and slap them all onto one FAQ page. But, it seems just using the FAQpage markup and allocating each of those FAQ's into a category where I can answer them at the bottom of a related blog would be far more beneficial.

TLDR; What's better, Sole FAQ Page or tacking 3-4 FAQ's and schema marking up to related blogs?

Force Your Way To The Top, And Watch Your Rank Drop. SEO Is A Game Of Patience

So I've recently received many messages asking for tips on SEO from both the business owner and SEO expert side. The biggest advice I will give anyone when it comes to SEO whether it's an agency or a local business owner is that SEO is a long term process and there are no shortcuts to rank overnight. That means whether it's internal SEO or external SEO you'll need to be refining and adjusting your process over and over to see the best results possible.

Many of times I've seen people watch my SEO audits just to go pay some SEO expert overseas $50 a month for SEO just for their site to tank and be eventually blacklisted by Google and sent to the shadow realm of the tenth page or further, and on the other side I've had business owners start working with me only to leave 2 months in when they aren't ranking number one yet. Both of these strategies will not produce the SEO results you need for your business, and of the three clients I have currently the one thing they all have in common is patience and dedication to the process which is why all of them have seen drastic improvements to their SEO strategies and rank over time but it took over 6 months to do. Remember there are no shortcuts in the world of SEO and the best results are done over time.

Career Advice pls...

You guys are the most friendly SEO experts I've found on the Internet so I figure you'd be able to throw some thoughts my way!

I'm head of SEO for a public eCom company that is growing and doing very well. Like every job there are pro's and con's. The pro's are that the gig is stable and pays "ok" whilst the major "con" is that their tech stack is horrible and it takes weeks to edit anything on the site which for SEO has a major impact on trying to optimize the site

I've been approached to join a Gaming Website; and whilst I haven't done my full Due Diligence it seems that they are doing very well. The budget and salary they are offering beat my current situation...

I guess my question is this: first off - what do you guys think about the Grey Market Niches? There are some pretty major SEO restrictions with regards to the gaming niche - but of course, if you get it right you can grow fast in a lucrative niche - or - would you just stay in a tried and tested eCom biz and basically grow from there?

Thanks for all suggestions and comments!

Dear Consultants: Can a drop shadow in a font affect the HTML's readability by Google?

This is what a consultant told me so I removed the shadow, although I very much preferred having it. For reference, this is on the WIX platform. I was told to remove the drop shadow as it can disturb the HTML and affect SEO potentially. Would this be because the code is less clean/efficient for Google to crawl if it's inflated with these types of effects?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does setting up a CNAME affect SEO?

TL,DR: New and improved website is live as a non-www version (the old version was also non-www). I'm considering setting up a "www" CNAME record for people that might type in "www". Could this negatively affect SEO?

I just completed a significant website redesign a few days ago. The site ranked very highly for a lot of target keywords, but the conversion rate was not very high because the website was not designed very will for conversions.

My skillset is definitely more on the conversion rate optimization (CRO) side of things rather than SEO, though I do know the SEO basics. I also understand the importance of SEO. Naturally, we'd like to keep those search rankings high.

Here's something the original SEO (very skilled and well-respected SEO person in my local area) for the site said, which confused me a little bit:

> Make sure when you push the site live, you use the non-www version. I just had a client mix this up and use the wrong version - and rankings tanked.

I've got the new site live with the non-www version. I'm considering setting up a "www" CNAME record in case someone does happen to type in "www" before the domain, but I'm a bit scared that this might hurt my SEO.

Do you think this is actually a significant concern?

Let me know what you guys think. Thank you in advance!

Whole Site completely Lost Rankings but no penalty or deindex?

Few days ago my website completely lost rankings, It was ranking in top 5 for some of the top competitive keywords for 2 years now, and now it's nowhere.
I haven't received any warning, penalty or nothing in GSC or mail and site has completely lost rankings. It's not even the last page of SERP for KW. Even when I domain name then also the website doesn't show up.
But the twist is I all the URLs are indexed and even getting crawled, I've checked it using site: and in GSC also.
One thing, week ago I faced japenese hack but after a day or 2 I fixed it and after that site was again ranking the same way same position.
What could be the reason for this?
I am thinking of redirecting to new domain, will it work?

Cost for number 1....

I do all of my own SEO work for my site and have done a pretty decent job overhauling it in the last 18 months(went from ~10 KW's ranking 1-10 to ~300.)

I have a couple of words that I just can't quite crack, the SD is ~36 - nothing crazy, I'm on the 4th or 5th page just lingering.

Do any freelances do one time deals? What would the cost be to get 1 or 2 keywords to the top 3?
