So many times in SEO I have found myself going up against or looking at industries in which there are huge players/companies with million-dollar budgets and years of SEO behind them, and seeing something like that can be very discouraging especially for individuals who have never been in that situation before so I figured I might share some ideas on what I typically do in that situation to help some of you out. (Warning i'm not an SEO know it all, but I have positively ranked clients in the past)
- Go After Your Local Area
- If you're going after a massive national-level search term chances are you are going to run into some massive competition, and because of this it might be easier and more cost-effective to target your local area instead. Oftentimes people believe this is only a great idea when dealing with service industry businesses, but businesses of all types can benefit from local search traffic. Also just a heads-up this doesn't mean to completely ignore national-level traffic, but maybe make some location pages and build them out with proper SEO and link building (GMB profiles will also be helpful as well)
- Start A Blog Based Around Niche Related Questions
- Starting a blog can be a great idea to get additional traffic on your website and one trick to SEO blogging is creating blogs that are relevant to questions in your niche as they tend to be low in competition and high in search volume. For instance, let's take a look at the flooring industry as I have a flooring client. I created blogs for them with topics like "How Much Does Home Flooring Cost" or "The Advantages Of (Insert Flooring Type)" as these are popular questions around the flooring industry.
- Hit On Low Volume Search Terms
- Big companies come with a massive amount of resources and because of that oftentimes they end up fighting over these 20,000+ monthly search traffic keywords and one way to get around being stuck in that fight is going for low-volume keywords. Often time low volume keywords tend to have lower levels of competition and if you can manage to capture enough of these terms the volume begins to add up.
- Use The Copycat Method To Get Solid Backlinks
- One great thing about having big companies in your industry with massive resources is that just like another website you can use them to scan for new quality links. I tend to use Majestic and just plug the URL of a website in and then scan their do-follow links to see which ones I can snag. If you combine that method with the local area tactic you tend to see some great results as local companies without SEO knowledge tend to lack SEO prowess.
These are just a few quick things I've found to help you compete with huge businesses with massive SEO resources and if you can think of anymore I would love to hear them in the comments
