Does this sound normal to you?

I've done 100's of SEO projects and have written 100's of articles now and not once have I been asked for a screen share of how I do my process, research, write my content, what tools I use, etc.

A new contact that wants to contract me out, wants to "see if I know my stuff", what do you all think? Does this sound normal?

0 search volume on SEMrush or any other software for that matter; is it accurate?

I have been doing a lot of research for specific key word phrases across various cities in my state ( weed delivery being the main one) and for every city I am searching; it’s popping up as ZERO. Some of these cities have 1 million+ population and I’m having a very difficult time believing that 0 people are searching for weed delivery…. How accurate is that 0 volume figure 🧐

[backlink building] Does the actual topics of your backlink profile matter for SERP ranking?

I'm building backlinks for a software company. When I look at their backlink profile on Majestics I see that the top 4 categories of their topical trustflow are 1. Sports 2. Media & entertainment 3. Recreation

The categories that should be there -in my opinion- are Computers / Software / Internet.

Do you think it would be beneficial to make an effort in changing these categories to the correct ones by making the sports/recreation backlinks no-follow & adding more backlinks from software blogs?

Struggling to find the right keywords

I am working on a client’s website but struggling to find the right keywords.

Their business is food exports and imports. It’s general food products like edible oils, pulses and grains, diary products and more general food items. (They sell directly to wholesalers)

When I did the keyword research, most of the keywords used are broad and the ranked websites mostly belongs to organizations and governments.

I looked into their competitors but their sites are not optimized for SEO. (The client provided me with a competitor list. It’s very hard to find them without the list) It’s like SEO is not important for them.

What is your suggestion for finding the right keywords?

Any point in creating bunch of articles for same keyword.

I have a discussion with a person from another agency who feels the need to pile on more and more articles that are related to the same subject.

I feel there is no point to it. If all the articles compet for same KW, what is the point in cretaing 3 articles about it, from ranking and SEO stand point?

Anyone here can sahre their opinion?

I'd rather have one or two really good articles the 4 good ones. Again, they all have the same purpose, ranking for a specific KW?

Practicing SEO with blogging platforms like Medium/Hashnode?

Hi everyone!

I made a post earlier about taking on SEO for a cryptocurrency website to practice my skills. A commenter suggested I start my site instead, since crypto is a competitive niche and results could take time.

I felt I needed actual experience of running a business's SEO to really learn. But I think I may be wrong. When I came in, the founder promised that the WordPress site was running, which meant more control over SEO.

Apparently, that's a lie—the business uses Medium to publish posts, even though they have a functional website. Now, I'm not jumping ship immediately, but I want to practice before they move the blog to WordPress.

I have an Hashnode page where I post articles. It's an alternative to Medium, but for tech-related content. I like it because it's free and promises infinite customisability. I can add widgets, track SEO analytics, and create multiple pages.

My question is: are these hosted platforms good for learning SEO? Would their domain rating influence how well my posts perform online? I'd like to hear from those who've grown their Medium/Hashnode/Ghost pages significantly through SEO. Thanks!

Time to rank a page on 1st page of Google

This is a common question in SEO: how much time is required to rank on the first page of Google SERP. I can say there could be several factors at play that determine when your content will rank. For myself, as a test case, my page ranked on the first page (9th position) right after 3 months. It started appearing in results from 100th position to 9th position (today). Let me also tell you that I had better content than the competitors and I have correct on-page SEO. My site is not HTTPS.

What are your findings?

Advice for ranking new site and demoting old one for a specific topic

I work for a firm that maintains a government website, call it Site A, that is primarily about Topic A. It has excellent ranking and has been around for many years. On this site we have a page about Topic B, which has been around a while and is one of the top viewed pages on the site. We recently launched a new website, Site B, that is all about Topic B. The problem is when people search for Topic B that one page on Site A still shows up at the top, followed by several news outlets talking about Topic B. Site B is still low in the rankings. It has been up for only a month but Topic B is getting a lot of local media attention. I added a link to Site B on the page on Site A but that isn’t doing enough. Do you recommend deleting the page on Site A? Setting up a redirect on just that page? Just waiting it out? “Topic B” is about to become very important to our city and we want people to find all the information from us, not the media. Also I cannot delete Site A or 301 redirect it to Site B because Topic A still has relevance.

Thanks for any guidance!

What to do about Keyword Cannibalization and Duplicate posts?

Hey friends,

I have a word press site with about 700 posts and about 1000 visitors a day (30K a month)...

...there are a lot of articles focusing on the same keyword and some of the content is duplicate but with a slight variation.

For instance:

I have a recipe for lets say "coffee with chocolate and strawberries" and the owner of the site decided to copy that exact same recipe and just change out the word "strawberries" for something like "apples" or "kumquat".

The way I went about attempting to fix this is two fold:

  1. I created a round-up of all the "coffee with chocolate and X" type posts and put all recipes in one place.
  2. I then 301 redirected all the posts with "coffee with chocolate and X" to the round-up post and changed up the recipes a little.

Now.

Here's where I get a little confused --

What next?

  • Do I trash the old articles leaving them indexed and just rely on the 301 redirect?
  • Do I move the posts into Draft mode so no one can find them on this site any longer?

Trash or Draft? That is the question.

P.S - I love you.

Why is Ahrefs KD so usless sometimes?

Every search I do on Ahrefs, at least half of my results are keywords where the KD is less than 6 but the websites on the SERP are all >50 DR. Surely this is obvious to their algorithm, how can they be assigned a KD < 6?

Also, why can't they just design a metric where it checks the serp for low DR/UR sites? Is there any other tool that is better for looking for under-served keywords that would be easy to rank?

I Was Turned Down For Being Too Young In SEO

This story began two weeks before Christmas when I sent over one of my digital marketing attack plans to a potential client. The video was only 10-15 minutes but I thought it did a really great job outlining what that business missed as far as SEO goes and even more so it did a great job highlighting their competitors and what their current strategies were. The client seemed to think so too as they emailed me back saying "Wow that was better than what I've received from any agency I've worked within the past" and from there we set a time to meet for a zoom call and follow up meeting.

Now fast forward to the weekend before Christmas and I had gotten really excited for this meeting and about 10 minutes before the meeting the business owner jumps on and I can sense that something seems a little off the moment he sees me, but we continue forward throughout the meeting without any problems. I felt that it went almost perfectly I answered all the questions well, the conversation really flowed, and most importantly I felt that he really was involved throughout the entire meeting, but then he ask me "Hey so how old are you?" and not really thinking anything about it I said "23, but I've been doing marketing for a while now as that was my major in college and I've owned this business for over two years." After I gave the answer I could really sense a feeling of doubt creep onto his face as he followed that up by saying "So how do you know you'll stay in this business? I mean when I was 23 I tried so many different things in life and ended up in a completely different career" and while this seemed like a valid point as many people tend to switch fields throughout their life I've always felt marketing was just something that interested me so I responded with essentially that response telling him "Marketing has always just been something that interests me and I like helping business owners". Again not the response he was quite looking for but we closed off the meeting and said our goodbyes.

Now the day before Christmas I get an email from him informing me that he won't be moving forward with me as his SEO service, and while that hurt me a little bit I decided to ask why and he said that he would just feel more comfortable with a more established company. Which to me felt as though he was trying to avoid saying the age problem without really saying it but maybe I'm looking too much into it. But is there really a too young to be an entrepreneur type of age? I always looked at it as starting young gave you more freedom to make mistakes as you didn't have kids to pay for and had more time to recover.

Is targeting country-specific terms a good idea?

So, I've been working on SEO for a crypto startup. The site is pretty new, with no content, so DA is ridiculously low. I've been targeting low-difficulty since the low DA puts high-difficulty keywords out of reach.

That said, I discovered some country-specific search terms with low difficulty and wondered if I should go after them. An example: "How to buy cryptocurrency in the US".

What do you think of this strategy? Is it good, or should I focus on ranking for the general keyword itself?

Is it a bad practise to create URLs and delete for testing purpose on a live project?

Google has a lot to process & index these days.

It looks like Google is taking months to find new pages (especially if the website/blog is new) and index them. It's been over 2 months since I wrote a few pieces but they haven't been indexed yet.

But yeah, if it is zero KD keyword (in Ahrefs), then it is indexing/ranking pretty fast. Not sure how Google bots are working these days. 🤷🏻‍♀

Is this worth following up on?

A solicitor's website is very outdated + the only on page seo they have is really title & h1 tags. The best thing going for them is the content on the website.

They rank very high however due to being established for a long time & good reviews.

My main question is, for a well established company that ranks high, but has very bad technical/on page seo, has anyone seen results by improving it? I'd like to reach out to them, but not if I can't deliver results.

This would include structured data tied to their business, meta tags, better on page seo, not just one h1 tag & then a title tag. Also, since I do web design, I'd redo the website, better call to actions & better mobile experience.

Forgive me, I've only done seo & keyword research for new websites, not well established ones.

Kinda lost with SEO - How would you proceed?

Hello there.

I've recently started working for a digital marketing agency and they've dumped a load of half-abandoned SEO projects on me and no training or support whatsoever. The onboarding process was more or less a pat on the back and an email that contained SEMRush credentials.

I have a rich copywriting background and my content-related SEO skills are fairly decent, but when it comes to the more technical stuff I'm at a loss.

At this point, it's obvious that it falls to me to figure out everything on my own - there's nobody in the agency I can turn to, and I really can't afford to mess this up. I kinda have to go from SEO zero to SEO hero as quickly as possible.

Duplicate content question

Hey, I am currently trying to rank for multiple keywords that require very similar content. 1. Let's say for example, I am trying to expand into the promo codes for video games keywords. The problem is all my competitors have very similar content to me. How do I make myself standout, and make google not think that I'm copying ( which I somewhat am, but adding alot of value to readers)

  1. And on the other hand, let's say I am ranking for step-by-step articles that require identicle steps to perform. So, what should I do. Change the words on the steps? Link to original post? Link to category?

Redirected My Website To a New Domain Name!

I've redirected my website to a new domain name a week back.

Google hasn't yet replaced my indexed articles with the new domain name. And my main domain has lost its rankings. What can I do?

Note: I have tested the redirect via redirect checkers and everything looks fine. Manually checking also looks good.

Best metric for SEO growth?

I'm looking for the ONE most effective metric to make sure my SEO efforts are paying off.

In your experience, what is the best SEO metric? (another way to think of this is the most important ranking factor)

I ask because I originally thought it was backlinks, so all my efforts were spent in trying to get more. This worked well initially (it gives you a short-term boost), but over the long-term our traffic decreased because we ignored other things like page optimization (one example, our website got slower which led to less traffic).

So I wonder where I should focus instead?

A few notes:- It has to be one metric. I know most people will read this and think "you should focus on everything!" but we're following pareto's principle and it's easier to work as a team if we're all rowing in one direction.- This could be anything from referring domains, page speed score, organic traffic, or even some tool's score like Moz score or Ahrefs rank, etc... I'm just looking for what has been the most effective focus based on people's experience.

What are some good tools that can help in brainstorming various subtopics / trendy topics out of one main topic? For ex- if I put "supply chain", then I may receive secondary subtopics like "logistics" and even more sub niche topics like "freight broker" or "trucking business"?

Please help I have already tried many keyword tools that can just spit out meaningless variation of same keyword or just gives an endless list of keywords which contains the main topic's kws. For ex- in the supply chain example - it will only give keywords like "supply chain management", "supply chain gifts" "supply chain for dummies". I would like to receive related topic to the main topic not variation keywords. I hope that makes sense. If you are a seasoned SEO professional then please share your tips. Many Many thanks in advance.

What are some words that make you cringe in SEO writing?

I would be fine if I never heard or saw the word "aesthetically" ever again.

Here are a few high-ranking examples courtesy of Semrush's Keyword Magic Tool:

Dark grunge aesthetic wallpaper

Dark aesthetic canine wallpaper

Dark academia aesthetic outfits

It's silly, isn't it? Why are Americans in love with this word? I cringe when I see used in a headline.

Since you first started using Google, how often have you typed the word "aesthetically" in the search bar? Me? Zero.

Give it a break. There's a good chance most people don't know what it means.

SEO Strategy

  • Do keyword research: This is the most important step to doing SEO effectively.
  • Write High Quality Content: Don't write you content for search engines write your content for the user experience.
  • Put your keywords in your URL: One you find the keywords you will be targeting make sure you put them in your sites URL.
  • Add one internal link: You should have at least one internal link that links to another page in your website.
  • Add one external link: You should have at least one external link that lings to a high authority page outside of your website. You can always use Wikipedia.
  • Add keyword to image alt tag: Make sure you put your keyword in the alt tag of your images. It is good to have about 3 images and you can put words that are similar to your keyword in the alt tag of the other images.
  • Put your keyword in the header text format: Make sure you put your keyword in header 1, header 2 and header 3 format.

How to adjust for Multiple Domain Redirects

I’m on webflow but my main domain is changing another time.

How Search Engine index blog post saved on Backend?

How do search engines index blog posts saved on the backend?

Hi,

I have a doubt! I have a new website and I am adding some posts to the blog section. These posts are retrieved (with pagination) through a REST API when the user goes to the /blog page of my website.

I don't understand how Google can retrieve them and possibly index those posts.

Thank you,

HOW: SEO for business in non-english speaking countries

I'm fairly new with SEO having done a lot of self-teaching and some traditional learning. I have a client who lives in HK with both English and Cantonese as their main languages. This got me thinking right away, are there best practices for doing SEO for clients in non-english speaking countries?

Let's say I only speak English. How do I do a business's SEO in their native language? (Hire an SEO person who knows the language? Or is there an actual way to do it without having to speak their language?)

Thoughts?

Google SEO Is Broken Search Console Is Not Crawling My Website Links

On the 24th of November half of my website links showed up with 'pages with errors' on the Google Search Console, when I never had any errors before.

On the 6th of December I noted a Google information link located at the bottom of the 'Coverage' section in the Console. In this link Google stated that "December 6-14 - An internal issue caused an increase of redirect errors during indexing, and associated email notifications. This was not due to any website issues, but was due to an internal Google issue. Pages that were dropped from the index have been scheduled for recrawling."

The traffic for my website is now almost non-existent and is stressing me out. The pages have not been recrawled yet, even after various attempts to do so. My sitemap is very well managed and updated regularly as it reflects in the Google Search Console.

All of my links show up on DuckDuckGo and Bing, with Bing being pretty much perfect.

Any advice?

Hello, First of all, I wish you all a happy New Year's Eve. Question can be silly but I would like to know please, when I have found some niche keywords, is it better to put them all in the same article (only if they have a logical link I would say)? if so is there a limit of keywords per page (I use yoast seo premium which offers a maximum of 5 keywords), or should you only put one keyword per article? I'm an idiot. Need an adult!

I manage a small website for a local cleaning business. Just a homepage, and about us page and a single page for every service that they provide.

I wrote all the texts, and even got the page to rank at TOP3 for my main keyword for a while. But now I'm hopelessly stuck at place 6-7.

I now hired another company to write and publish a bunch of relevant articles, as we had little to no dofollow backlinks.

But what else can I do? Do i have to keep rewriting the service pages to keep it fresh for Google? Seems like busy work to me. How can a local business page stay on top??

Is this a legitimate content/SEO strategy?

Another question from my side but this one is about a content strategy to increase organic traffic. I have this collection page (Product X) which is the main keyword (12k volume). But Product X has many types and colors, and I do not want to create individual collection pages with content to target those smaller keywords for Product XA XB XC because in my opinion the website needs to be clear and clean as possible without being it an obvious marketing/seo machine.

So I was thinking to just write blogs about all those types and colors (volume around 200 each, so very small) and then have internal links to my main collection, and some product links.

Questions:

  1. Is this a valid strategy?
  2. Lets say I make 100 blog posts, would linking 100 times to my main collection page be spammy? Is there some kind of optimal ratio?
  3. Do I need to think about anchors when linking internal as well? Or would the same anchor (the main keyword of the collection) be fine?

Looks something like this

Main Keyword: 12k searches (Collection Page with 2000 words of content to target main keyword)
---Color A: 200 (Blog + Links to Collection + Product)
---Color B: 240 (Blog + Links to Collection + Product)
---Color C: 450 (Blog + Links to Collection + Product)
---Color D: 150 (Blog + Links to Collection + Product)

How are group buys legal? Can somebody explain to me how a group buy is different than piracy?

This isnt a moral question, I just dont understand the distinction here.

Scenario 1: A group of 5 people all put $100 in the hat for a $500 course/software. One of the 5 guys takes everyones $100, buys the product, and then shares it with all 5 people. This is a group buy. It is apparently legal, but generally against TOS.

Scenario 2: One guy puts forth his own $500 to buy the same course/software. He uploads it to a warez site and shares it with a bunch of people. This is piracy and it is illegal.

Its the exact same thing. One guy is legally buying a single unit of product and sharing it with multiple people. What is it that allows group buys to legally exist?

Opinions wanted - can you tell a website's traffic reliably without installing Google Analytics or Search Console etc.?

So, unrelated to me, but my company botched a website migration by not following SEO best practice.

However, it was a relatively simple redesign on the same domain on Wordpress, the only change was to hosting.

Some third party SEO guy for our client trashed our company into oblivion for launching this way. And I used to work in SEO, I get it can affect rankings. However, this wasn't the deal he made it up to be. We had a website backup, reversed everything and began doing the SEO best practice (again, I had no idea the web team had done this without that in place, wasn't my department). To my knowledge, reacting quickly like this won't harm the website, it's only waiting weeks that can hurt rankings.

I then got curious and checked the new website we'd done for the client - it didn't have any Google Analytics or Search Console etc. installed because this third party SEO guy didn't even have access to the new website yet.

I ran a SEMrush check and it looks like the organic traffic hasn't tanked at all - it's exactly the same.

My questions are:

1) How could this guy know the website "tanked" their SEO? It was mostly the same content and URLs on a redesign. I'm not saying it didn't affect them, but how would he know this without installing GA or SC tags first? Do you think he's misinterpreting the cease in that feed to Google as a dropout of traffic?

2) He and the client all refused to share SC or GA logins with us when we asked - why would someone hide that? What do they have to gain? I just wanted to call the guy out on his theatrics for trashing us, to be honest, given SEMrush told a different story (of course SEMrush is less reliable, that's why I wanted access to the actual data). Also, is it reasonable to expect us to handle the launch when we don't have access to search console?

Thanks for any insights and opinions - I can't see straight on this one anymore.

Blog archive - show more button and SEO

Hi everyone, we are redesigning my company’s website. The UX designer we hired came with an idea of show more button on blog archive page. Namely after visiting the blog archive you will see 6 mos recent blog posts, and to load more posts you have to click on show more button (it is not a pagination link). We realised that the google robots will be able to index only the first 6 blog posts. Right now we’re trying to figure out how to solve this problem. One of the options would be probably replacing the button with pagination, but I wonder is there any other way to make all the blog posts visible for the robots?

When I check the click and impression number for the name of our brand which should lead to our homepage, it dropped to 0 overnight and has been 0 since… There are no removal request or Security & Manual actions. The homepage is indexed, but it’s completely gone with basic and straightforward queries. We’re looking at the right property on GSC, and no change was made between before the drop and now… Any idea of what could’ve happened?

I Accidentally Bought A Blacklisted Domain

A while back I read about this SEO strategy where this guy bought old domains with some authority on them and then used those to create a variety of different backlinks to his site. It seemed like a solid strategy especially in the long run as you could always add additional links to those sites as well, and long story short I figured I'd try it out for one of my lead generation sites I was planning on creating.

I started my search on Godaddy as they have their own domain auction; however, I found many of the sites had absolutely no power on them, and the ones that did cost thousands of dollars so I decided maybe I would try and search elsewhere. After looking for about an hour I came across a site that had a very limited selection but the pricing was rather solid from what I had seen elsewhere so I decided I would take a further look. I plugged them into my backlink tools and it seemed as though the sites had a solid amount of strength and a high number of backlinks; however, the lost amount of organic traffic should've raised a red flag. Despite my better judgment, I decided to buy a plumbing related backlink and boy did I regret that,

I built a rather nice website around that domain and optimized it to rank for my local area, but after 3 months I noticed there was no real traction not even local impressions just from people searching and seeing our GMB. It really made me question my SEO strategy as I've had clients rank who ranked on the first or second page at that point in time in much more competitive industries, and even the ones who didn't still saw a solid number of impressions. I decided to ask one of my other SEO friends about it and he said it could be blacklisted you should check and if it is see what for. I thought to myself "Blacklisted, no way I haven't even done anything major on this site that would cause such a thing"; however, I decided I would give it a shot and find a tool to see if it is.

I ended up finding some free site online that checks for blacklist penalties or any Google infractions that a website has committed and you guessed it the website had been blacklisted or rather shadowbanned and wasn't appearing for most if not all of the keywords I had targeted. I took a further look into it and found thousand of spammy links from foreign sites that were unprotected and immediately knew that something was up. See originally I had just checked the power of the site and never ventured further, but now I was going to have to check every single link and disavow those that hurt the site.

After 3 days and over 16 hours, I finally finished disavowing every harmful link and for those of you wondering the website is well on its way to a positive ranking. We currently sit outside of the first page, and most often on the third page but this was a major improvement from a few months ago where we found ourselves with a penalty and not appearing at all. For those of you interested in this strategy really make sure to do your research as there's no shortcuts to SEO.

Is Yandex worth trying?

I'm currently using Google search console and bing webmaster tools, but also there is Yandex... should I give it a try with Yandex? Will there be any US traffic from that Search engine rather than RU, because it can lead to lower RPM in the future. What do you think?

Any service that generates a sitemap for us?

I'm looking for a service that'd be able to generate a sitemap automatically with a crawler, for as many sites as possible (my clients for example), keep them updated, and use Google's APIs to notify of any change.

Did anybody hear about such a service? In case you didn't, I'm willing to build it. Anyone else with such a need?

Need help with Canonicals.

I have a client with huge index and deals in auto parts. Now they have so many parts that goes with almost a couple hundred vechiles and it uses the same name, description and the only difference is the price and part number. Let's say we have many parts with the same name, which one of them will be the canonical?

Domain penalty lifted - should I keep working on it?

I have been working on this website since 2015. It used to get 400K UVs monthly until 2020, but it started sliding down in the SERPs slowly after that, and in a few months I had a manual penalty show up on the Google search console. Traffic was 60-90K/M then. I removed some links, (and spam pages on my website that bots were able to create because registration was open), sent a reconsideration request and it was accepted (7 months ago), but it never gained the rankings back. Currently, it gets 70K UVs per month, but it's slowly declining.

I am not sure what to do? Once penalized, is the domain always on Google's radar? Should I keep working on this website? Or should I create a completely new website on the same niche and start everything from scratch?
