Should I move to paid hosting or stay with blogspot hosting? Advice needed?

I am working in a Digital Marketing Company in India and have been thinking to start a blog of my own. Currently I have a domain name hosted on blogspot.com from past one year and with the renewal coming near I was thinking of buying a paid web hosting. From my experience as an SEO executive I know its better to use a paid hosting service rather than free blogspot blog but I am hesitating to spend the money. I earn around 15k in Indian currency. Somehow able to save 4k every month for emergency. Still, is it a good idea to continue working on blogspot or should I shift to paid hosting? Does anybody have any suggestions for cheap and legitimate hosting options in India.

Have you ever failed to deliver results for a client? How did you handle it?

I’m still pretty inexperienced other than a couple hobby projects I’ve worked on.

It seems like if a campaign doesn’t work out or social media doesn’t bring in new business for a client, or... the design doesn’t get more calls, or whatever...

If something doesn’t work you learn from it and try again. Right?

If you’ve ever not been able to deliver results, and neither you or the client isn’t happy with the results you’re delivering, then how do you handle that situation?

how long do you try and tweak at things before realizing it’s not working?

And SEO and social media and all that take time to build up, so... how long do you try? And do you just tell the client “sorry I dunno what to do”

Or do you just keep hypothesizing until they run out of patience?

Honestly I’m trying to avoid this situation all together by only taking on clients I know I can make improvements for.... but that doesn’t guarantee they’re going to get results either.

How important is the /URL order path?

I don't know how to ask this question, since I don't know what the name after the forward slash is.

So I'll just provide 2 examples:

Plumbers(dot)com/Services/Residential-services

OR

Plumbers(dot)com/Services
and
Plumbers(dot)com/Residential-services

Does it matter for SEO to have a path? /services/residential-services/kitchen or could it go straight to .com/kitchen

Do I add new pages with keywords to my website or blog?

So you have your list of keywords, and are going for th pillar page/skyscraper strategy...each linking (anchor text) to the sub page for that topic..until they all link back to the 1 big page etc..this is easy and all good

Now my question. Should these new pages be on my site or the blog. I'm having trouble putting them in the site structure.

Why Do Tag Pages Rank Higher Than Main Service Pages

I built this guy a website and he's complaining that his tag pages rank higher than his main service pages. He's doing a ton of blogging. I didn't do any SEO for him I just built him the site but,

A) Why would tag pages rank higher?

B) Is it because of internal links?

He has his focus keywords he wants to rank for as the main title for the tag pages and not his main service page. His main service page has no internal links and has only 1 keyword he's trying to rank for in the content. He is optimizing the meta tags on the main pages. No alt tags optimized anywhere on the site.

Any ideas?

Is this still considered buying links?

Let's you're paying someone legitimately (like an SEO expert who works at an actual agency in the U.S. who does freelance work) to actually do white-hat outreach to acquire quality links for your brand, then this is not considered buying links, am I right? I don't see how in the world you can ever get penalized for doing this. It's not like I am paying $10 to incompetent Indian spammers overseas (see Fiverr) who immediately raise a red flag and should be avoided at all costs. I am talking about actual U.S.-based agency guys with a portolio and a Linkedin porfile who do real SEO work and is even willing to hop on a call with you.

Of course, I am paying for a "service" in hopes of acquiring high-quality links, since the work will be strictly manual but it's really not "buying links" straight off the bat. But of course people will always tell others, "never buy links". But I'm pretty sure in cases like this, it's perfectly fine, no?

Basic Keywords and Backlinks Question

Hello SEO Community! I’m trying to do some SEO for my business and I have some questions.

Once I find the keywords that I want my website to rank for I can strategically place them in my site by auditing my website, my only question is, should these keywords be on every page or just one? Can each page have different but related keywords? For example, I have multiple locations in 3 different states and each location offering are a bit different, can they each have their own key words?

The next thing we’re doing is upping our blog game to create high quality content that can grow and attract backlinks. In regards to back links, If somebody back links to one of my articles, does that give my whole domain more authority or just that blog post. Meaning, will that backlink help me rank higher on Google when people search for my website? Or do they have to backlink to the homepage for that to help.

Thank you guys so much in advance I’m really learning so much from the community!

Checking what we rank for

Hi all,

I know this is a fairly basic question but figured you guys would have the best advice!

We currently get 50-60% of our traffic from organic means, I'm wondering what the best method is to see which search terms generate those organic hits? We currently run a WP site and have google analytics running. I have an account on search console and some other google tools.

Will I be able to check what we rank for today, or do I need to set something up and *then* check after a few weeks?

Domain name: hyphen or .net?

My preferred .com domain name is taken ... parked. The price is quite insane of course :/

I've looked at various prefix and so forth. The two word domain name contains keywords to the company and a little in regards to a general search.

My choice is this:

Put a hyphen between the words and create a .com or no hyphen and get a .net

example-name.com vs examplename.net

I know people say there's no SEO difference. Maybe that's true. But I do think there's a mental preference to .com when they see it show up.

Which do think is better given the above?

It's so hard to gain backlinks

A lot of SEO Experts claim linking to other websites in the niche will boost your own ranking, but in reality, rarely someone wants to place a backlink. I believe the logic "why should I place a link that can take my hard-earned visitors outside of my website" prevails. And I understand that. Relevant niche websites are very often indirect competitors, so the last thing they want to do is send people over to competitors or let them leave their website altogether.

On the other hand, guest posting, building private blog networks etc. are also penalised by Google.

It feels like getting quality backlinks is really, really hard in 2018.

We keep producing good content, but it is rare that someone links to it.

Are you guys struggling with the same?

How do you deal with it?

Do you pay for getting backlinks?

What's your general approach?

Re-posting blog posts and SEO

I read or heard somewhere that some people use sites like medium.com to repost the first paragraph or two of their blogs and put a "See the rest on our site" type link for people to continue reading. I've seen this on a few medium posts recently as well...

1) Is this a legit way of getting more backlinks from blog/forum type sites like medium?

2) Will Google penalize the backlink/domain because of reposting the initial blurb of the blog? In that case is it better to write a different blurb to introduce the blog post to use for posting on such sites?

3) Does it matter if the account you post from on those sites is branded with the domain you are trying to boost and/or links back to that domain as well or not?

Should we keep our help unindexed and recreate blog posts out of them instead?

Say, that we're trying to rank for the keyword "captioning" and we already have a bunch of help articles that are related to that topic on our Zendesk subdomain, but they're all related to how captioning works on our platform.

We made a product page on captioning: why caption, how it works, what formats, what OS it works in, and etc.

For instance, since we already have one on how it works on our help site, should we just link to that page or rewrite it and include it the product page? I'm thinking we should rewrite it?

Should we also unindex the help site? I see the benefit for users because they can just go to google and search how to do X in our product, but then we probably can't reuse the same content in SEO articles...right?

Is Hiding Links a Bad SEO 'Trick'?

I am currently attempting to optimise the pages on my site. Throughout the site, I have been using buttons that say 'Read More' or 'Find Out More'. I read somewhere that having keyword links is far more useful in terms of SEO, than having links that say 'Read More'.

What I decided to do was add a couple of internal links to the text that was already there. So if there was a keyword, I would link it to a page on the site that strongly relates to it. However, as I didn't was the homepage to be cluttered with links, I altered the colour of the text so it looks as though the link doesn't exist. The only way of telling there is a link, is hovering over the keyword and seeing the change of the cursor.

Is this something that Google would frown upon? Is it considered an 'SEO Trick' or is it perfectly fine to use? I'm new to SEO so any advice that you could give, would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks!

US Redditors, time to mount more resistance on Net Neutrality repeal...

Congress has until the end of the year to reverse Ajit Pai’s net neutrality repeal — afterwards, it gets way harder to restore protections against blocking, throttling, and new fees. Our last best chance to save the open Internet is to pass the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to overturn the FCC before the end of this Congress, but a crucial deadline is rapidly approaching.

Lawmakers have until December 10th to file the CRA discharge petition and force a vote to overturn the FCC. So we’re bringing together tech companies, small businesses, and Internet users for an epic push on November 29th to make sure lawmakers act before the deadline.

If you want to save the free and open Internet, the single best thing you right now is head over to DeadlineForNetNeutrality.com and tell your reps that you want them to restore net neutrality.

Then click here to find ideas for how you can use your piece of the Internet to spread the word to more people. Whether you run a blog, website, or have social media accounts with a handful of followers, you have an important role play in spreading the word. And if you have ideas for how we can reach more people share them in the comments below.

For months nearly 250 House representatives have sat on their hands and done nothing while Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T used lobbyists and bribes to kill net neutrality. Now we're need to work together to make sure they have to face their constituents before the deadline to overturn the FCC's undemocratic repeal.

Difference between social bookmarking and social media marketing

Social bookmarking is an online service which allows users to add, annotate, edit, and share bookmarks of web documents. Many online bookmark management services have launched since 1996; Delicious, founded in 2003, popularized the terms "social bookmarking" and "tagging".

website: Reddit, Plurk, Mix, Medium, etc

Social media marketing is the use of social media platforms and websites to promote a product or service. Although the terms e-marketing and digital marketing are still dominant in academia, social media marketing is becoming more popular for both practitioners and researchers.

Affiliate disclaimer in the foot being flagged as duplicate content

I am fairly new to webdesign, seo, and the who thing. I am trying out affiliate marketing and I was trying to optimize the site for SEO. Anyway, I tested some articles out on copyscape.com to test for duplicate content and see if anything came up. I have the amazon affiliate disclaimer in my footer that shows up on every page and it comes up as duplicate content. I was thinking maybe this was normal so I went to other sites that had the disclaimer in the footer but they aren't getting flagged.

Am I missing something?

Local SEO for IT Support and Consulting business

Hello, I'm an IT professional who's been trying to self learn SEO over the years. I've been trying to out rank the local computer shops in my area who are low competition, but I've yet to figure out what I need to do to accomplish this. The keywords I've found they're ranking for are low competition. I'm a one man show and I don't have any local clients all my clients come from Upwork, I've been trying to gain some locally and can't seem to break whatever my barrier is. I don't have enough clients for cash flow to invest in any SEO tools or specialists.

How do you out rank someone for keywords? Do I use the word more times than the competitor on my website or blog posts?

I know backlinks from related industries carry some weight in ranking. How would I go about getting good legit backlinks? I've tried to be a guest blogger in the past, but nobody seemed interested.

I appreciate any help or advice you guys could provide!

Made simple improvements to website, lost ranking.

Made the following improvements 2 days ago, woke up to find we lost at least one position in ranking:

  1. Cleaned-up my Schema so it passed Google's test.
  2. Embedded faster-loading coding for JotForm
  3. Compressed some images

Site loading is faster (1.9 secs).

Is this a pogo situation - or have any of you received similar results to the above kind of "improvements"?

Tips on Getting Higher Rankings and More Traffic.

According to a study by Infront the first page of Google SERP receives around 95% of the total traffic! It’s a daydream for millions of websites over the internet to find themselves on the first page of the SEPR and so, let me tell you best tips on getting higher rankings and more traffic. But SERP wisely chooses only 10 web pages for it. Now, this SERP ranking depends on a lot of factors. And here we’ll exactly deal with the tips to get higher ranking and high traffic on your website. People go crazy over finding the secret keys and strategies to get higher ranks and traffic, but it isn’t that difficult.

Know Google Algorithms better!

Google keeps on updating itself because it knows that changes are must! In fact, would you believe that on an average there are 500 to 600 major-minor changes per year in Google’s algorithms? So, you have to keep yourself updated with it!

But how would you know the changes?

If you are aware and updated enough with smarter tools like Moz, then you’ll always know about the all the changes in the algorithms. Specifically, the Moz Google Algorithm Change is all you’ll ever need!

So, what’s next?

Know where you stand!

Yes, you need an analysis of your current rankings in order to plan a strategy. So, for this, you can use the SERP tool and know the real-time rankings of your web pages. Now, start by knowing your site’s issues and correct them. You need to know what are the issues in the website like issues related to canonical tags, issues related to SEO and a lot more.

For this, you can use either AHREFS or SemRush. You simply have to add an account and the tools will crawl the entire website to get the complete report on issues. So, you can manually solve the issues to get the website’s health better than ever!

Optimize the speed!

This is one of our favorite tips on getting higher rankings and more traffic! Google loves the website which has super-fast speed. Now, you need to check your website’s speed using Pingdom test and once you get the reality check, just start working. There are a lot of tools which will help you in optimizing the website’s speed to the maximum!

Is your website Mobile friendly?

This is one of the prominent tips to get higher ranking and more traffic. You have to make the website ready for mobile because around 96% of Google browsing is done through mobile phones. So, make sure you are not lagging behind.

How about some keywords?

Yes, you have to stuff multiple keywords on which users conduct their research but make sure they make sense and goes as per the content. Now, by doing so, you would give Google multiple options to push you on the top of SERP.

Add some quality content!

The quality content is one of the major keys to secure higher rankings and high traffic because Google majorly judges your website by the content you put on it.

Wrapping up

These were the major tips on getting higher rankings and more traffic. We hope when you implement our tips, you get some amazing results.

Would you use software that automatically makes changes to your site in order to improve search engine ranking?

What are the risks of cancelling SEO? Our business is at capacity and not looking for new customers.

My business has a huge backlog right now, we are months out. We are not accepting new customers currently and not actively looking either as we don’t have capacity. Handful of pages disappearing from SERP...

My site (5 years old, pretty strong DA) has seen a period of decline for keywords I am tracking. Recently, 20 pages have disappeared from page 1 of the SERPs. In fact, they've been outright obliterated.

They don’t come up in Google even if I search my website’s name followed by the exact title of the page. I can only pull them up using a site: search. There is no manual penalty warning in Search Console. I haven’t partaken in any sort of unnatural link building practices myself. The site as a whole remains healthy with significant traffic.

My best guess is an algorithmic penalty has happened, here's why:

In 5 years I’ve never disavowed links before. However, when I noticed this issue, I looked at my backlink profile in Search Console to discover spammy unrelated sites linking to my website, and many hundreds of them happened at the same time with the same anchor link text. Unfortunately, even with tools like Majestic, Moz, and Ahrefs I'm having a hard time matching up the spammy stuff from Search Console with those tools. Just as a random example, http://lianbox.ir/ & http://lilipot.ir/ appear in Search Console as one of my top linking sites but the 3rd party tools aren't picking those up.

1) What else other than an algo penalty for bad backlinks could make pages disappear from SERP (but still seemingly remain indexed)?

2) With data not matching up well between tools, what's the best way to go about determining what links to disavow?

Best SEO Tips which will help your website Rank "Faster"

There are a number of ways you can rank your website in top searches of Google. I happen to be implementing a lot of strategies lately and noticed their outcome. Listed below are the top factors which will help you Rank better against your competitors.

1) Content (Unique):

The best way to start working on your website is by creating unique content. As I know a lot of you are not familiar with this term, let me break it for you. By saying "Unique Content" it means what every you upload needs to be totally different/new from what is already available online.

2) Keyword Research:

This is the most important, let me repeat it again it the "MOST IMPORTANT" part in ranking your blog/website. To do this the right way you should analyze your competitors and try finding matching keywords which have low competition. This way it will be easy for you to rank your product.

3) OnePage SEO:

You might be wondering what this means? It simple, there are some factors which you need to take care of. Let's say you have a website and it needs its "OnePage" SEO. You need to check for

  • Page Titles
  • Image Optimization
  • Url Structure
  • Keyword Density
  • Internal Linking
  • Meta tags

4) Social Media:

Social Media plays a vital role in helping more traffic landing on to your website. You must have a profile on all the vital most used platforms of social media in your location, and market your business there. This is the best remedy which gives your business the right boost it requires.

5) Target Competitors Backlinks:

No need to go for random backlinks for your website. In order to rank best for the specific keyword, all you must do is target your competitor's backlinks. These backlinks will give your website the right juice which it is in need of.

Worth the shot?

I've been thinking about starting a dropshipping site that offers organic products only. I'm lacking a bit of confidence since my Shopify store didn't do anything for me. I'm thinking about trying Wix as an e-commerce platform since they have SEO in their plans, but I don't think that it will be enough for me to get traffic. I also don't have the budget to hire an SEO company and even if I did; sales aren't guaranteed.

There's a lot of niche products that falls under organic products, so I do think that the clients are there. Do I work closely with someone that has experience or do I seek something else?

I am taking over a site from a novice developer / SEO... Where to start?

I'll start by saying I that I am a full time web / UI designer that has a reputation for being good at SEO because of my previous projects. I don't do this full time but I am familiar with the space due to working for an SEO agency for 5+ years.

I recently got hired to redesign a Ecomm site built on Wordpress, which I'm very familiar with. After the re-design I went to start my SEO work and noticed the previous "dev" tried to set up Yoast and failed miserably, but there is a Google auth code in the Webmaster Tools section. They do not have contact with the previous dev so I do not have access to any analytics or anything before the site "went down".

Is it safe to set up a new Gmail and setup a fresh Webmaster Tools & Analytics account?

Is there any tools that I can use to find the old URLS or analytics? (Unfortunately there's no Wayback Machine archive)

Any other things I could do to preserve link juice and authority without any previous data at all?

Thank you in advance for any info.

301 redirect page lost ranking

At the beginning of October, I changed the URL of one of my top performing pages. I had always read that as long as you 301 redirect, it should be safe.

However, the page is completely out of search results for its keywords. It only appears if I put in the url with the keyword.

It's so bad that other pages of my site are now ranking for this keyword.

The 301 redirect seems to be working perfectly fine, but I'm at a loss for why google has tossed the page out. The content is still the same, nothing changed on the page.

What can I do to get this page to show up again? Should I avoid 301 redirects from now on? Does it simply take several months for it to come back? Thanks :)

Hey guys,

I’ve always had a question about SEO I never understood. When a small business that has a website with services that they offer, how do they rank? Because they can add all the keywords they want to rank for but then the pages don’t publish any more pages?

Do they just link build? Is that why companies have blogs, so they can publish more quality content and rank?

Thanks!

Will the page location of the markup for a multi-industry business make any page ranking different, or any different to how search engines understand the page? For example, if I am in the bike industry, and I am selling bikes, and I am repairing them, should the markup for selling bikes industry be on my main page for selling bikes, and the bike repair be on my bike repair page?

Question about content

Ok if I added more information on my website.

Maybe less then 500 words.

Then I go to search console and site map it and fetch it on google?

Or am I using those things wrong.

Thanks

Having on site links to other articles in anchor text + having the same article in the related articles at the bottom

Hello guys,

Does it cause any problem to have 2 times a link to the same article on a same page but from different source.

One is through and anchor text in the article and the other one is through the related articles plugin ?

Thanks for your opinion.

An unverified GMB knowledge panel is showing up for our business instead of the main verified one??

I think I know the reason but I want to hear what the community says.

There are technically three different businesses operating out of the same address. All three have different names, yet share the same address, phone number, and domain name ( yet link to different web pages).

I assume Google believes this is spam, because well it looks pretty spammy.

The thing is, the other two verified GMB businesses show up in the knowledge panel, whereas the main business ( and main website where the other two businesses have pages ) does not show up?

Can I simply differentiate the businesses with unique phone numbers to resolve this?

Client removed page instead of 301ing and now lost his ranking, how fast can he get it back

Hey, we reccomended a change for a client to their url. They were supposed to 301 to the new URL but instead they just made a new url and 404'd the old one. They were outright removed from google search (from top 3 to gone) because the page was a 404.

This happened yesterday. Today we got the page back up and im reccomending that the client submit a crawl request from the webmaster tool.

My question is:

Will they recover from this?

If so, about how long will it take?

My Website Has A Bunch Of Spammy Links...Possibly Due To Blackhat SEO.

What should I do? There's like 3,000 total backlinks (from 254 domains) and a lot of them seem very spammy. A bunch of them don't even exist anymore (404'd) as well as random Russian websites, and websites that have nothing to do with my industry, etc...

Do these negatively hurt my SEO? Does removing them help my rankings? Do I need to manually disavow each link? Or can you disavow a URL as a whole?

If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be very helpful. Thanks!

About to launch a very content-heavy WP site. Designating cornerstones, need some advice.

Hi r/SEO!

So I've got a new WP site with some custom coding, and I've had Yoast running for all of my content insertion across 10+ pages and 200+ posts. I have only designated Cornerstones for 3 pages and 2 posts thus far.

My question is: is there any point in designating Cornerstone for a page that is absolutely the main attraction of our website, but which also lacks dedicated text? We have an about page and campaigns pages with 600+ words which we will regularly rewrite, so those make sense for Cornerstone. But the "main attraction" is a digital library of externally hosted content (tons of internal and outbound links with essays on each page), and I want to designate the search page for that library as a Cornerstone. Thing is, there's only 32 words on it, and I cannot and should not add more text. Is this a bad choice for a Cornerstone? Is there another easy way to make sure that Google prioritizes my site's library SERP/search page?

Thanks for any advice you can provide :)

Should a website be perfectly SEO optimized first before running a PPC ad?

I have a friend who just launched a new e-commerce website. From an SEO standpoint, it is absolute shit. I want to help out with his SEO efforts but he wants to go straight to launching google ads to get traffic/sales. do I tell him his site needs to be well optimized first (SEO) before doing that or does it not really matter? this is kind of a "what needs to be prioritized first at this early stage - seo or ppc" question, pretty much.

[GUIDE] Interviewing and Interviewing SEOs (also useful for job seekers)

Hiring the right candidate for an SEO role is incredibly hard. Every candidate has their own opinion on what does and does not work in SEO. So how do you figure out if someone knows their stuff? And how do you know if someone really has passion for SEO?

You don't want to end up with an unmotivated colleague that, three months in their job, turns out not to understand the SEO basics 👎

Because this questions comes up frequently on the /r/SEO subreddit I decided to put write down everything I know and could find on interviewing and hiring SEOs in this article: https://www.contentkingapp.com/academy/hire-interview-seo-candidates/.

The article covers:

  • What makes a great SEO candidate
  • How to separate the wheat from the chaff with an SEO audit
  • Interviewing best practices (using STAR method)
  • 21 in-depth SEO interview questions, and their desired answers (plus additional reading material)

BONUS we spoke to Patrick Stox, Paddy Moogan, Ruth Burr Reedy, John Doherty, Natasha Woodford, Ross Tavendale, Martijn Scheijbeler, Beau Pedraza and Dale Davies as they've been doing a lot of hiring to hear about their best practices.

Also useful for job seekers

This article is useful for those on the other end of the table as well, as it'll help you prepare for the interviews and give you insight in how those on the hiring end think.

Missing anything?

Do you feel there's anything missing? Or do you want to share how your interviews went? I'd love to hear about it.
