SEO approach for writing about software/apps (personal blog)

Hello everyone!

On my personal (wordpress) blog with a domain, I usually write about freeware and use the Yoast plugin to help, but wanted to see if my approach was correct.

I usually write about a useful website or app and the keyword is something like "software X review" and try to do my SEO that way. I've tried looking at keyword alternatives, but just not sure how I should be going at this.

Would it be better to aim for keywords about the function of the app/software? e.g. "time zone converter", "X is a free word processor"?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, just want to bring more traffic to my hobby blog, thank you.

Blog vs landing page

Hello,

Sorry for the likely ridiculous question. I'm just beginning to learn about SEO.

I'm putting a website together for a business-owner friend for free. He's not internet savvy but he wants to rank his business in search.

Can a simple page rank for a local keyword or do we have to maintain a blog in order to rank?

Luxury Travel Agency Help

Hi everyone! I started a boutique luxury travel agency back in September. I don't have a budget for a social media guru at the moment. I'd like to grow my website in Los Angeles and Tulsa (especially Tulsa). My brand is Preserve Travel

I created my website via squarespace. How much time should I allocate to SEO's? I'm tech savvy and a quick learner. Tulsa is a huge market for me and I'm trying to get my website on the first page of a google search.

I'm planning on starting a blog soon with popular luxury destinations and hotels. I hope that will organically bring traffic. Again, I have no idea what I'm doing or how to get started. Any tips or recs (books, videos, forums) will be appreciated!!!

Thanks :)

Content creation with my client

Hi,

So I do SEO for my client who's a photographer. We agreed that she would do her copywriting as she feels comfortable with it. All I had to do was provide her a keyword list.

So I did my research, gave her about 15 keywords (3-6 words) for each type/category of photography on her website: weddings, events, documentary.

I think she did an amazing job by describing each post, using Yoast as a guide and even adding H1 and H2s and internal links.

However, she only did it for the wedding category. She decided that it's pointless to do for the other categories as she will get paid more for wedding photography.

Fair enough.

Here's my question: would leaving the other two categories harm the overall on-page SEO? They are basically just portfolios with photos, no text, titles, nothing. I presume it's better than making them a 'thin content', with only a couple of sentences for each page?

What's your opinion?

Question about h1 and UX

Hi!

I’m working with a clients SEO for their product pages.

Right now they are using H1 with copy written to increase conversions. Sadly, that copy is not good for SEO. It mostly consists of “emotional messages”.

I want to enhance the SEO by changing the H1 and add better keywords. But, well, we have some arguments.

We have been discussing a mixed path where we style the h1 to be small, and the “conversion headings” to be big. Would this work or is it a no no for google?

Example;

<h1 style="font-size: 1em;">SEO heading</h1> <p style="font-size: 1.5em;">Branding / call to action heading</p> <p style="font-size: 0.5em;">Page content</p>

Thanks in advance /vexxan

New to SEO. Have a client who owns a bar/restaurant. What should I charge based on the following services.

As the title says. I designed a website for a client and I will host it soon. They are asking for help marketing. The SEO is for a bar/restaurant in a certain part of the neighborhood that has plenty of competition. They receive decent foot traffic because of location but want to bring in more people. From my understanding, SEO can be a process and take anywhere from 3 to 12 months to see results. I would rather have it sooner than later.

I want to bill them monthly and give them a couple options. Here are the options I was thinking of. Option 1 Complete a full SEO audit

*Google My Business Optimization, Google says this is the #1 thing to do to increase their rank.

*Directory Listings, having more sites link to them.

*Facebook page, update all keywords cross-linking to GMB

*Google Search Console

*Google Analytics

*-Add reviews to their profiles such as Google, Facebook, Yelp, etc.

*-Have more content on the web including pictures.

Option 2(includes everything in option 1) This is for a more aggressive option to get results faster. *Google Ads

*Submit XML Sitemap

*Management of GMB

*Have content/articles written about them.

That is all I have come up with. Suggestions on other services that could assist is greatly appreciated as well. I really do believe in this business and want to see them succeed.

Thank you

Does page size matter if page speed is quick?

Hi,

I'm on creating a new website and toying with the idea of using video BG's for some elements. I've done tests through Pingdom and received the following results:

With video:

  • Load time: 1.58s
  • Page size: 4.4mb

Without video:

  • Load time: 1.32s
  • Page size: 1.3mb

So the load time doesn't increase too much, but the page size rockets. Is page size a technical issue or is ranking based purely on load time?

Thanks in advance

How to Compress Image Files to Speed up Site?

When a tool like GT Metrix or Web page test tells me to compress images, do they mean to make a picture go from 800 pixels to 700 to make it a bit smaller, or is there something else I should be doing? Local SEO for restaurant that has seemingly used all outlets.

Hi all,

I’ve been trying to help a friend out with his restaurant in a fairly competitive market/location. In particular the map pack.

We have a well optimized and claimed GMB listing which we’ve been updating with new social posts, events, etc.

A website that is optimized for some keywords. We rank on the first page for several keywords we are targeting. “Location + Bar” “Location + Restaurants” and a few others. Domain is about a 1.5 years old. The downside is he changes his menu daily so we load images for his menus. Yoast for on-page recommendations. We have some strong back links from the Food Network/ Major Local Papers and good publications. DA is still low though. We probably have about 2/3’s the backlinks of our main competitor.

Very active social with a good following.

A good amount of reviews. 180(ish) compared to our main competitor with about 230. Most are in this range of reviews. We are actively responding to reviews. Good score btw, 4.8.

NAP/Citations are good too.

The catch is, we rank poorly on map packs. Can be inside the restaurant and it’s deep down the list unless we zoom in a bit then we immediately jump to number one.

I’m running out of ideas for him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Blog Topics for Overall SEO Performance

So I have a bicycle tour company in a popular tourist town. I rank pretty well organically for a nuber of important KW's but always looking to improve.

I have a blog in which I have written on pretty much every topic related to bicycles in my area. I'm now wondering, should I start writing about things like restaurants in my area? Museums? Sightseeing?

By writing about topics only related by location am I somehow diluting the authority of a bicycle related site?

Dynamic Ads a bad thing?

I have a small law firm and use Adwords is my PPC. Since Dynamic Ads came out they are the majority of my clicks/conversions.

However my question is... since dynamic ads present the user with what they want to "see", how do i prevent the search from being an informative search vs one that will actually convert?

It almost seems that keywords are less relevant now that dynamic ads exist?

How should internal anchor text look like?

Hi guys,

There's thousands of info regarding this already, but I wanna hear your opinion.

Let's say I've a main subpage /dog-training and 100 news/blog posts on the same website linking to it. For best results, if I wanna rank for exact match kw, in this case Dog training should all of those posts have a anchor text dog training or I should still have different variations of it? Like; read about dog training, best way to train a dog, train a dog, how to train your dog etc.

I mean I know it looks better and not as spammy if you use variation. But if I have no intend to rank on other kw beside Dog training. How would you approach this?

Thanks,

Unable to view Google Analytics data for blog

Hi! I was about to begin creating a content + link-building strategy for this website that's built in Bootstrap 4 and the blog which is hosted as a sub-folder on WordPress.

I wanted to start off by creating a baseline but the problem is I'm unable able to see sessions to the blog posts after a certain date but I can see the hits to Home and index pages. The tracking code is installed in the header of index but not in the blog (header.php in WP).

Sitemap for home page ( /sitemap.xml ) is statically generated with the <loc> <lastmod> and <priority> tags.

Here are a list of things that happened in chronological order:

  1. Jan 2nd week - I create sitemap for the blog using Yoast, robots.txt, added the sitemap to robots.txt and submitted to Search Console so it's like /blog/sitemap_index.xml
  2. Jan 2nd week - Search Console discovered all the URLs - 4 pages of home sitemap and 100+ posts and misc stuff for blog sitemap
  3. An error pops up inside the Coverage report sitemap.xml (index) and it reads Submitted URL marked 'noindex' and this has been happening from late October and user agent source is Smartphone.

But the pages are set to index in the robots.txt of the homepage. I can't quit figure out what the issue is.

I did add a Allow : / to the blog robots.txt

Any way to reduce outsourced blogging costs for my niche sites?

Hey there, long time lurker. (hi other lurkers!)

I currently run 3 niche blogging websites which are all on autopilot via outsource writers.

One of them has been around for almost 2 years, with 60+ well written articles. This one has been making me money from ads and eBook sales (which is my plan for the other 2 sites).

My other 2 sites are of similar niches that I have pretty strong confidence will grow quite well organically also. These two are only 1 month old.

My issue is, to get these new sites start indexing well I'm spending $10USD per week on each site for a 500 word article. I worked out the math and when I do this for my 2 sites it totals to about $1100USD over 12 months, which is a lot for an independent developer like myself.

If I also add on my fortnightly costs for my already well established site, the sum total to manage 3 niche blogs over 12 months ends up being closer to $1500USD.

I was wondering, has anyone been in a similar situation to myself where it suddenly becomes an expensive risk to proceed with more niche sites?

I would love to hear any suggestions anyone has on lowering my costs.

The profits from my first site are around $5USD/day avg so any external advice would be amazing before I decide to jump in the deep end.

Thanks!

Questions about headings

I'm using a page builder and they don't currently have the option that allows me to globally change the font size for my h1 h2 and h3 headings. Essentially, my h2 headings that I use for subtitles in my article are too large to be aesthetically pleasing, and the size of h3 is more appropriate. Is using h3 headings instead of h2 and h4 instead of h3 in my paragraphs of my articles going to cause any negative effects on Google's ability to crawl my site, or is this ok to do? How to rank blog posts for not just USA, but also UK, Canada, and others?

Hi everyone,

So I run a blog that makes money through ads and affiliate sales. I'm English, but as it's a completely online company this is irrelevant, and I type in American English, because, y'know...money.

However, I've reached a level where I'm ranking very highly for many high-value posts on US Google, and to further expand my audience I need to also rank on the UK, Canada, Australia Google etc SERPs for these same keywords for these posts.

Despite being ranked in the top 5 results for these keywords on US Google, I do not rank at all for some queries on UK google, or I am on the fifth page. Same for Canada. I'm unsure as to why this discrepancy has occurred, and any info would be amazing to replicate this US success in these other markets. The website is registered to a UK domain company and is hosted in the UK so you'd think this would boost UK credentials, but alas no.

Any info would be very much appreciated, cheers!

For a beginner level in SEO, I'm trying to understand how it works. Are these good questions to ask? How would you ask questions or answer them?

What is your expectations process to start SEO? What kind of framework or process would you go through?

So, for that question, I would use Google Search Console to optimise the website. Then, I would brainstorm set of keywords, before researching them on Google trends. Next, I would search for the metrics to identify long term keywords. Compare the cost, competition and search frequency. After that, keyword categorisation. Find keywords that give an edge. One way to do this is a keyword research tool called Moz.

Another question might be about flow. Specifically details on the project flow?

And site mapping? Robots.txt. What are some of the commands can you do? That you can use by robots.txt to control how webpages show up in search engines?

no-index meta tag? to ensure the webpages are invisible to search engines and why would it people do that in the first place?

Will a table of contents negatively impact a post for too many internal links

I have used moz to scan a few pages on my site. One of the complaints it has about a few pages is the number of internal links. The pages in question are wiki pages where there is a tree structure to show the table of contents. Each post in this table can be clicked to bring you to that page of the wiki. Some of these wikis can have over 30 pages. The table of contents is toggled, so it doesn't cause a problem, but it means a lot of internal links.

This does add a lot of internal links but this provides a good user experience. How do i fix this? Do i have to sacrifice usability to stop a google using this as a negative ranking factor?

Impact of "Case Studies" or "News Articles" on SEO?

Hi everyone, I'm very new to SEO and wordpress in general (I've been asked to take control by my boss and it is not my area of expertise at all!) so apologies if this is a stupid question! I have read that dead pages or "zombie pages" can affect the google rankings of our company website. Do past news articles or case studies contribute to these? For instance, we often write case studies which showcase the service we provide but these case studies may still have relevant information despite being published in 2013. Similarly, news articles are often posted to provide interesting reading or hopefully link people to our website in an organic way. Should I be removing old examples and if so, which ones should I remove and how do I decide?

Many thanks in advance!

Can 2 websites operating under the same parent company share content?

Hi, so the company I work for is launching a new business; it'll be the same consultancy but specialising is one sector only. So the content I would write for the business A would also be relevant for business B, but I understand from an SEO point of view duplicate content performs badly and the pages would compete with each other. Google Search Console launches new removals tool

Google has launched a new removals tool within Google Search Console. This tool does three things (1) lets you temporarily hide URLs from showing in Google search, (2) show you which content is not in Google because it is “outdated content” and (3) shows you which of your URLs were filtered by Google’s SafeSearch adult filter. How to access the tool. You can access the tool within Google Search Console, under the “Index” menu, labeled as “Removals.”

[Case Study] Invested $171.95 & 298 hours on a blog in a year and now it returns me $400/month.

It was November 2018 when I discovered the term "Event Blogging".

After researching a bit, I thought to create a simple Wordpress blog where I will write about an upcoming movie. The movie was about to launch in January 2019.

And, I immediately bought a domain and web hosting both from Namecheap.

  • .com Domain: $8.88 for a year
  • Shared Hosting: $17.28 for a year

That's a total of $26.16.

After setting up everything, wrote 3-4 articles in the next 2 weeks about the movie including some random details related to the movie casts and stuff.

Nothing happened.

Later on, I deleted all those 3-4 articles and started writing about a few popular exams in India - like eligibility criteria, syllabus, dates, books to prepare, etc.

On average, I was publishing 1 article of ~1000 words almost every week.

No link-building at all. Just basic on-page optimizations.

From March 2019, started seeing some traffic of about 1000/month on the site.

Kept doing the same - 1 article per week (but, now the articles were a bit longer; ~2000 words), and till November 2019 the monthly traffic on the site reached 12000.

Till October 2019, no ads or affiliate promotion on the site - so ZERO earning.

I, then, created a detailed and genuine sample test/mock test for one of the exams which I was getting most of the traffic for.

[And, it was not difficult for me to create the mock test questions, since I, myself, had appeared for the same exam a few years back.]

Launched.

Placed a banner on the sidebar, and created several internal links inside the posts which were getting traffic.

In December 2019, it brought me $250.

And, in January 2020, by the time of writing this post, it had brought me $350. And, I'm pretty sure it will touch $400 this month.

Monthly traffic has gone to almost 16k now.

That's it.

NOW, LET'S DO SOME MATHS.

Mock Test creation platform that I used costs me $30 per month. And, it's been 3 months since I'm using.

$30 * 3 = $90

And, the previous $26.16

In November 2019, I transferred the domain to Namesilo ($8.39) and hosted at Siteground ($47.40 for a year).

$90 + $26.16 + $8.39 + $47.40 = $171.95

Total Money Invested till Now = $171.95

Now, let's calculate the invested time.

I spent an average of approx. 3.5 hours per week for writing and publishing each blog posts. And, there are 78 posts on the site, currently.

3.5 hours * 78 = 273 hours

And, spent approx. 25 hours designing the Mock Test.

Total Time Invested till Now = 298 hours

That's an average of 4.96 hours per week (from Nov 2018 to Jan 2020; approx. 60 weeks now), and approx. 45 minutes per day.

SOME RANDOM FACTS

  • This wasn't my main blog.
  • I invested only the extra time during weekends that I got after a few SEO clients and my main blog.
  • Till now, I haven't done any kinds of link building on the site - not even a guest post.
  • 100% of the traffic comes from Google.
  • The site only has a Twitter account (no other social media accounts) with 18 followers and zero engagement.

WRAPPING IT UP

I didn't have a proper idea of what I'll do with the site. I just got into and started doing something. Soon, changed the idea from writing about a movie to writing about various exams.

And, kept on writing without having a lot of expectations from the site. I didn't even know how I will monetize the site.

But, everything kept moving by time.

Imagine! Just 45 minutes every day.

Start doing. Stop procrastinating.

Thanks.

I'm open to any questions that you might have.

PS: Please don't ask the website's name or the exam's name that I have mentioned.

How Facebook Marketing Can Work For You | 2020 Strategy

Three billion monthly users, Facebook is by far the most popular social media platform.

However, you are going to need an excellent Facebook marketing strategy if you want your business to stick out among the 60 million businesses on Facebook!

Step 1: Define Your Marketing Goals

You know the best before you know what to do, you need to know why you are doing it. It is very easy to succeed when you give yourself a target to aim at.

Here are some very familiar business goals for Facebook brand pages.

Drive referral traffic. It is not very easy as it used to be, but you can still drive traffic from Facebook.

Strengthen brand awareness. Likeliehood are your target customer is active on Facebook. Make them know you exist.

Build a relationship with your audience. Groups are a best way to build community and achieve this goal.

Provide customer service. People expect to be able to reach their businesses through their Facebook pages.

No matter what your goal might be, it’s important to remember Facebook is a social platform that allows two-way communication with your customers and target audience. Treat it accordingly.

Generate leads and conversions. Particularly through advertising.

Step 2: Audit Your Existing Facebook

You should have a Facebook business page even if you have not done much with it strategy wise? If so, it is a good idea to review where your page’s performance is currently standing. This can help you to identify opportunities for improvement.

Here, you can see they have filled out the following sections:

  • Mission. What are you all about?
  • Contact Information. How can people get ahold of you?
  • Website. Where can I find more about your business?
  • About. Add a company bio here.
  • Company Overview. What do you do?

Step 3 : Know your Audience

Step 4: Develop Your Brand’s Facebook Voice

You now know who you’re talking to. It’s time to figure out how you’ll talk to them. This means set up your brand voice on Facebook.

Step 5: Perform a Competitive Analysis

Who are you up against on Facebook? It is totally worth taking the time to figure this out by doing a competitive analysis, so you can see what is working in your space also you can understand how you can differentiate your business.

Step 6: Discover Your Content Mix With 6 Different Kinds Of Facebook Posts

There are a number of different different types of posts we can create on Facebook.

  • Text Posts – Plain text and nothing more.
  • Link Posts – A link from a website shared on Facebook.
  • Image Posts- Either a single image or an image gallery with post copy and captions.
  • Video Posts – Uploaded directly to the platform or linked from YouTube.
  • Facebook Live Posts – Real-time video broadcasts.
  • Facebook Stories-Instagram Stories-style content (except on Facebook).

Step 7: Build Your Posting Schedule
Two most common questions marketers often have are what times to post and how often to post.

Step 8: Measure The Effectiveness Of Facebook Strategy

Creating a strategy and executing on it are not enough. You need to measure the performance of your posts and adjust your approach according to results over time. Given that organic Facebook marketing is more difficult now than it perhaps ever has been, effective measurement is made all the more important.

What to do with a client's outdated blog ?

My client, a printing company, had their website done about 5-7 years ago, and their SEO strategy at the time was to create a blog filled with various topics surrounding the printing industry, from techniques, to how business cards can help your brand, etc. But, they did not keep it updated with new content throughout the past 4-5 years.

So, it's time for a new site and given the way people use the web these days, we want to cut out A LOT of the fat.

Practically speaking, I feel like the blog should go, but I don't want to hurt their SEO by dropping 30 or so 301's and deleting the thing.

Will deleting the blog hurt the site's overall reputation? Of course there are new strategies to be put in place like uniformly linking everything to their social media accounts, reaching out to industry society groups to provide some fresh inbound links, a modest PPC campaign on platforms, and getting some video up on youtube as well.

Any experienced opinions on how deleting the blog may effect our SEO, provided proper 301's of course?

Had a brainwave but maybe not? Selling products with low KD but decent volume

So I'm not sure if this belongs here, but maybe someone who does Ecommerce SEO could perhaps give some insight to an idea I had.

I have been using Ahrefs keyword searcher and have found quite a few words related to a few niches that one can sell that have pretty low KD. Low as in around 10 or less on Ahrefs. Volume for such range from 5-10k monthly searches. I even found a few around 20K and that was just for the States.

So now Im wondering if one does a little investing in basic SEO stuff and starts ranking for these words could one potentially get some sales and perhaps make a decent living off a few of these keywords?

Is this an advisable strategy for finding products/niches in e-commerce?

Product page or special LP

Say I want to rank for a KW like "iron crowbar". I have an unoptimized category page for this type of products that could (and probably should) be optimized to be the ideal landing page.

But the product page (which is not optimized as well) already ranks at the third page of Google (so no traffic anyway). Should I try to leverage the already "decent" position and optimize the product page for the KW, or should I "throw" the page away and go for the category landing page which would start from 0?

Also, if the product page stays at some decent position against my will, is adding the category page as canonical so that Google hopefully prefers the landing page a suitable solution?

Guest posting duplicated content

I have arranged with another blogger to do guest posts on each others blogs however when I received the content I found it had already been guest posted on another blog in the same niche. I feel if I post it I will get penalized for having duplicate content on my site. Is that right? Or is there still benefit to posting it on my site?

Thanks

Best hosting?

I'm creating a new website for my business. I've noticed from time to time people say Wix is not ideal for SEO.

Does anybody have an alternative suggestion?

Has anybody benefited from disavowing bad links identified by the tools like moz, SEMrush?

I know Moz gives spam score, SEMrush gives toxic score to the backlinks. But Ahrefs seems discreet without similar metric.

Tips to Improve Click through Rate

Click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of clicks you get compared to the impressions you get for your keywords. It is simple to optimize CTR in paid ads as you have direct metrics to review and tools to take appropriate actions. On the other hand, increasing organic CTR is tough. To help you increase organic CTR, here are the top 3 tips:

1. Enhance the search result view

If your keywords are ranking on the top ranks and you are not receiving clicks, then the problem area is the way your ad appears on the search results. The search results include the following:

  • URL
  • Metadata (Title, Meta description)
  • Sitelinks
  • Schema markup

If it is complex or stuffed with keywords, then nobody will click on your listing. Thus, to increase organic CTR, you must optimize your search result view.

  • Create a compelling title

Generally, people add purely keywords in the title. You better add an emotional touch or make it captivating. You can also use numbers to increase your organic CTR.

  • Create a captivating Meta description

The Meta description is shown in the search result and it is one of the leading factors that can increase CTR. Many people leave it empty or just copy-paste the initial few lines of the content. However, it would result in a reduced click-through rate. Make sure your website does not have the duplicate Meta description. You can use questions to increase CTR. Make sure to keep it short and relevant.

  • Schema markup

Featured snippet which shows ratings, reviews, and other captivating features snippet factors not only attracts attention, but it also increases click-through rate. You can use the help of developers to add featured snipped in your search result.

New Update Version 6.0:

Schema.org releases its new version 6.0 in 2020-01-21. As per the new version follow are some changes you will get in version 6.0

  • Person and Organization added to the domain for interactionStatistic;
  • Added BroadcastService to the domain for inLanguage
  • Fixed error in definition of eventSchedule property

2. Use paid ads on the social media platform to improve CTR

Click-through rate can be doubled if your business is a known brand to your audience. People spent hours on social media sites. Thus, you can use social media paid ads to reach more people and build a memorable business brand. The social paid ads will also help in increasing your organic search rate.

3. Increase engagement factors

To keep your ranks high to increase CTR, you need to increase engagement as well. If your bounce rate is pretty high and if your engagement ratio is low, your ranks can be pushed down. If ranks go down, your click-through rate will also get decreased. Thus, it is necessary to work on improving the engagement ratio in order to increase organic CTR. One way to do that is to write a more informative article with interlinking. Add infographics and videos in your content to hold the interest of your visitors.

High Click-through rate will keep your ranks to the higher positions. Thus, it is necessary to maintain and boost your organic CTR. Follow the aforementioned tips to increase your CTR and leverage related benefits. Source: blowhornmedia

Black hat or white hat?

I know people dislike black hat or “grey” techniques but being honest they work if you do it right. I have never done white hat and yet my keywords have always rank in top 3 search results. I told someone I bought backlinks and they frowned on me. I really don’t get the stigma

Ranking without articles?

I am very inexperienced about SEO, sorry if this is really stupid. I want to start a gallery website but the niche is very competitive. Websites with 10+ years of history are writing articles about it. I can only make it as a gallery website, just playing on visual pleasure and giving people new ideas. Is it possible to rank on page 1 without any articles, just traffic from Youtube, Pinterest, Instagram etc.? Thanks in advance.
