Changing GMB location but want to avoid rankings dropping off?

A client of mine ranks really well for a very generic term. They want to change their address on GMB, but I'm worried they'll drop out of the local map results

Is there any way to ensure this won't happen? Should I create a new listing? I know that's not best practice, but it'll destroy his business if he falls off for this term.

Notice of CLS issues?

Yesterday I received an email from Google notifying me of issues with my website; I logged in to see 55 URLs affected with CLS issues.

I have never seen or heard of this before...But the graph shows issues going all the way back to May 6th.

I'm very confused here...

-Is this something new Google is looking for? Curious why I was just notified of this yesterday and hadn't seen errors when I logged into Search Console last week.

-Does it affect SEO?

-How can I quickly fix it?

Quick question about keyword and slug changes

Forgive my ignorance, I'm very new to SEO and have tried Searching for this answer with no luck so far. It's possible I'm slightly misunderstanding how keywords work too.

I want to target a long tail keyword, but being amateur now if I later find a better keyword for that post to target, perhaps similar but slightly less competitive. What's the best move?

If I switch out the keywords including in the slug, will Google cause me problems or perhaps assume duplicate content?

Alternately, if I basically rewrite a new article on the same subject recommending the same paint for almost the same reason could this be problematic.

I should probably cross this bridge when I come to it, but I want to front load a few big Informational articles on a new site and would prefer not to have to re-do them entirely once I've actually figured out what I'm doing.

Bonus question: when targeting similar long tail keywords is it best to include variations in one article - or write two different articles on the same or similar subject. I assume

Creating local area pages for a business that offers a wide range of services -- advice needed

Hi Reddit,

I am currently helping a family member improve their rankings and I am currently helping them with implementing a new website, with a highly rated and impressive web design company that also do SEO.

The business offers multiple treatment services: physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropody, pilates, massage and more, and the company building the website has said that we will rank higher for each local search – such as “London physio”, “Manchester osteopathy”, etc (but obviously more localised), by creating one-size-fits-all location pages for each locality, that will rank for all treatments types + the location: so a “London” page would in theory rank for “London physio”, “London osteopathy”, “London chiropody”, et al.

My concern with this is that: - These services are too different for this page to feasibly rank high (and the aim is absolutely to be #1 for everything) for all “treatment types” + “location” keyword. If the company only offered massage and physio then I could understand this working, but for example chiropody and podiatry and pilates are very different to the other services - Even if these pages were powerful enough to rank for all the service + location pages, the click-through-rates on the SERPs will be low, as these pages' titles will have to be fairly generic (I assume?) to attract customers for each different service and not alienate any particular service searcher.

It is worth noting that the majority of these locations are searched extremely low volume. The company operates in an area where even 1-2 new customers per month makes a marked difference, and in all but the top 5-6 localities (there would be around 20), there is probably almost 0 search volume.

The business already ranks adequately for the most popular locality terms – think occasional top 1-3, and mostly bottom end of first page, and these rankings are for precise "Service" (osteopathy, physiotherapy) pages that are more relevant than these location pages would be – and I fear this could be jeopardized by these location pages. But I also believe they would convert well enough as info on each service would be there for potential customers to click through and find out more about.

Therefore it is a case of whether these pages could rank for a diverse list of services + location keyword, and whether these pages could get enough clicks if they were to rank.

Any advice would be much appreciated, and thanks for taking the time to read all this!

Webpage slow despite strong metrics

Hi,

I've noticed that when a non cached version of my website is loaded, it takes about 3-4 seconds to load.

I have strong scores in speedtests like gtmetrix (A in Pagespeed and Yslow) and Google Page Speed Insights (90+).

I also generally have a low number of requests and small file sizes.

I've looked at other sites that have comparable metrics to mine, and they usually load in around a second.

Why is my site taking so much longer to load? What other factors are their besides the ones I mentioned?

Concerned with losing rankings with website dev changes

Hey guys,

I'm going to post this in more relevant subreddits, but this is still an SEO question so I figured I'd post it here too.

Whatever this Google update was, did extreme wonders for me. My impressions, clicks and CTR have all gone up since the update dramatically, and it's improved a lot of the positions for my blog posts which are now starting to show up on page one, and I expect some quality traffic to come through.

Currently, however, I'm not happy with the look of my website. I'm a web development novice, and I was concerned about the possibility of losing current rankings I have if I was to make any drastic changes.

I've built my website with WordPress, using a basic theme, and then using Elementor Pro to build the specific pages themselves.
I plan on staying with WordPress, but shifting across to another theme and not using Elementor whatsoever.

I previously had to change the URL slugs for my blog posts, and as such I had to include a 301 redirect for all of them to ensure I didn't lose any rankings. This time, it feels like it's going to be an even bigger task to ensure I don't break anything in terms of content, and making sure users could still view it after clicking from a Google search result.

Does anyone have any advice for me on how to proceed without the need for many headaches?

If you could only pick one SEO tool? Which one and Why?

I left SEO a long time ago but back in the day, the best tools used to be Ahrefs > SEMRush > Majestic.

I'm thinking of starting a new affiliate site and i'm looking to get one SEO tool to get started with as I really don't think I need the 3 at the moment. If you could only pick one SEO tool, what would it be and why?

Paid an overseas freelancer $1500 and about $1200 to webmasters for backlinks. How can I do this myself?

Hi All,

Based on the advice of my web designer, I hired this overseas freelancer from UpWork (a person my web designer specifically recommended) for backlinks to improve the ranking of my small IT services business.

This was an "outreach project" where the freelancer:

  • Identified websites relevant to my industry
  • Obtained their monthly traffic
  • Reached out to the webmasters to ask how much they charged for a backlink
  • Counter-offered their fee based on what I was willing to spend - most links were anywhere from $25 to $100
  • Had a running spreadsheet with all the data on there including the backlinks and status of various sites (paid, no reply, etc.)

My job was to:

  • Have an article professionally written to place on my site with keywords and Yoast optimized
  • Pay the webmasters' fees

I had a lot of trust in my web designer's recommendation but I'm now a little skeptical of the work performed by this "outreach consultant" for the following reasons:

  • For whatever reason, he didn't list the traffic for some of the sites starting off. I had no idea if these sites were of value or not. I then called him out on it and he started listing the traffic.
  • His charge is $7.50/hr and he charges 40 hours a week. He is now starting week 5. I know that the research and sending these emails could probably be time-consuming but I'm struggling to understand how this could take 40 hours a week for 4 weeks so far. I've paid 25 webmasters for backlinks.

Right now I'm starting week 5 and have told the freelancer that I would like to conclude the project. In retrospect, I'm wondering:

  • Did I overpay for the freelancer? Again, I find it difficult to understand how creating a list of 50 sites, emailing the webmasters, negotiating prices (for 25 sites so far) could take 120 hours. In retrospect, I may have put too much trust in my web designer's advice.

In any event, I will have paid about $3K total for the freelancer and the backlinks. I hope that these links pay off and my local ranking is improved.

In these times of COVID I have much more free time. I'm wondering if I could start a second project and do it myself.

I'm unsure of:

  • How to research sites and identify ones who will be beneficial for backlinks and how to determine if they place backlinks on their site
  • How to find monthly traffic
  • What the protocol is for emailing webmasters. Do I just say "Hey, I have this really informative article. Can you link to my site?"

Thanks for any advice!

How to analyze backlinks in Excel?

I had recently used the Ahrefs trial to download competitor backlinks. Since I am a bit of a noob to link building, I was a bit overwhelmed by the tens of thousands of backlinks in the CSV files.

Does pagespeed or GTMetrix scores matter ? Lousy scores but fast website ?

Funny thing is google page speed and GTMetrix gives me terrible scores yet none of my friends and I experience ANY poor page experiences or slow loads. In fact, trying to solve those issues that we are "recommended to fix" siply gave my website problems and SLOWED IT DOWN compared to DOING NOTHING at all. The actual user experience and scores don't add up.

I have asked all of my friends to test it out from their home WiFi, 4G telecom providers and public WiFi like starbucks and my website is still functioning fast and fine. This involved different computers, different phones, different browsers and different internet service provider. Links were clicked from social media, forums, google and even directly to the site itself.

THEY ALL LOADED INCREDIBLY FAST compared to what these "speed test" websites tell us. Adding any plugins or trying to fix the issues to improve the scores and "fix" the problems always made my website slow done in reality.

Ive heard really good things about Alpha Brain, but wondering if anyone in the industry has tried it and what their experience was. Were you able to get in the "zone" more, as they say? Realized I bought a pre-owned domain name, feeling a bit unsure

So, before I bought this domain name, I did some searches, seeing if any companies, random websites, or usernames came up for it. I'm starting a blog and wanted a fairly clean slate. Well, all I found was a Twitter user with the same name that hadn't posted since around 2014. Also, I wanted a .com, and nobody owned any of the other TLDs with that name. So, I thought good enough.

Long story short, a few days later I realized that the domain had been owned before. I forgot to check the Internet Archive. Someone had a blog from about 2013-2016 with pretty similar content as to what I am planning on posting. Not sure if I should pick a new name or not. I can pull out without too much trouble, as I'm still in the very beginnings.

Something tells me I might want to stay clear of this name. Should I re-choose? Or maybe I'm overthinking this? Thanks.

Sweet spot for content word count ? Does it have to be over 1500 words ?

To be honest some of my most quality content is 1000 to 1200 words. Anything over 1500 is simply going crap and becoming an essay. I also found that people usually don't read articles over 1500 words unless we are finding answers for a topic specifically, myself included.

Is it possible to rank and do well with < 1500 words ? For every 2000 word article, I have 12 articles less than 1500. But it doesn't mean these articles are weak, I find them to be the exact amount of information required to be quality content enough that gets the message across. Not everything has to be an in-depth tutorial or review which simply doesn't make sense. Half the internet is there for casual browsing anyways.

But the real question is, would there be technical SEO setbacks for writing less ? Adding more words to hit SEO will just produce nonsense if it doesn't suit the topic.

How different is SEO today compared to ~15 years ago?

About 15 years ago, I followed the old Webmaster World "26 steps to 15k per day" to generate affiliate marketing traffic and made some beer money sending people to Amazon and various commission junction sites. I had kids and they take up a bunch of time, something had to give so I gave up affiliate marketing.

My kids are teenagers and cloud computing is dirt cheap compared to what hosting cost years ago, so I'm dipping my toes again.

I have more programming skills today. I made a deep vertical niche website. I figured out how I can get users of my new site to generate a decent amount of keyword-targeting "thin content" on the site. I plant a few seeds and then I let the users do the rest. I tested it with my teenage kids, they seemed to get how to use the site.

I've got a few pages of thick content (1000 words plus) to supplement this thin content and act as "landing pages". I have about 15 more pages of this thick content planned, targeting keywords found with the google keyword tool.

I've also got a blog that I use to keep the front page fresh. I try to blog daily, searching news and youtube for fresh content related to my audience. I editorialize a bit on it to get upwards of 150-200 words per blog post. Blog posts don't target specific keywords, it's just freshness relating to the target audience. I blog about my thick content as I post it. I also plan to blog about the "thin content seeds" as I plant them.

Those blog posts get sent to my small social media presence. It's worth a couple clicks per day. I like to think it's my mom. :)

Questions:

  1. Is there a replacement for the open directory project? Getting a listing on DMOZ was a license to generate traffic... in 2004.
  2. Is content still king? Am I wasting my time writing 1000+ word articles about why you should consider performing X operation vs Y but having this discussion is dumb because Z? Do people use the internet to learn any more? Are users still looking for "their content"?
  3. Google Analytics doesn't seem to track keywords like it used to. How do I determine what keywords are "hitting"? What is this "search console" thing?
  4. How much SEO backlink value is there in social media? Is there a good social media subreddit?

Has anyone been experiencing site traffic drops?

Hello everyone,

I have seen a drop in traffic since COvid-19 lockdown started. Incidentally, an algorithm update was made by Google at the same time (Mar 18).

I've noticed the following changes:

-My impressions kept growing steadily
-But my click-through rates dropped
-As a result my web traffic also dropped

What do you guys think of this situation?

Does a full-out SEO strategy make sense for my local business?

Hello Friends!

I work at a small, local company. We definitely want to rank high for local search , so we see the value of having a local SEO strategy.

But does it make sense for us to also invest in a traditional SEO strategy?

My understanding is that a traditional SEO strategy is focused on improving your site's visibility on a national or international scale. Does this make sense for my company if only local customers convert? How much can or does a traditional SEO strategy impact local search results?

If we had unlimited time and resources, I'd be all for a traditional SEO strategy. I understand that more traffic, backlinks, etc. to my site generates from relevant/valuable content is beneficial.

But my company has to be very strategic about where we spend our time since our resources are limited. I'd hate to spend the time writing a beautiful SEO-optimized blog on dog grooming, for example, if that effort won't impact my SERP ranking when someone in my area searches for "dog grooming near me."

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

SEO - dynamic HREFLANG within Shopify theme/template (solution proofing)

CONTEXT:

We are trying to inject HREFLANG in a Shopify product page template.

Each product page needs different hreflang while a template has the same code for all product page therefore we cannot apply different hard coded hreflang on each page.

SOLUTION:

We are thinking to create a product METAFIELD with value including the HREFLANG needed. Its value will be different for each product and would be posted in the product page code.

QUESTION:

Does anyone already experienced this? Any feedback?

Is The Hoth worth it?

I am a new ecommerce company. We have a free virtual event we're promoting in attempt to build awareness and our email list. I came across The Hoth and see they offer to spread your press release for $100. I was originally looking to spread the word and publicity, but they make it sound more like it's for SEO. Does anyone have info on The Hoth? Will this be good for getting the word out about my event? Will it actually be good for SEO? I really have not focused on SEO at all so it could be a good start, but unsure if $100 is worth it.

How to track conversion for a button click?

Hi,

I need to track conversions on for an ebook page. The code goes like this:

input type="text" name="robot" id="frm-ebookForm-ebookForm-robot"><button type="submit" name="\_submit" class="button-link btn btn--primary">Submit</button><input type="hidden" name="\_do" value="ebookForm-ebookForm-submit"></form>

I guess it's just javascript so the page stays the same after you hit that Submit button.

Do I have to use Google tag manager? Is there another "simpler" way? I need it just for this one conversion on this site so I guess that just a one-line of code would do the job the best.

Could anybody please help?

Is it necessary to pay for citations?

I'll be specific to my current situation.

My business is in its baby stage. GMB was created in February.

I currently rank #10 organic and #12 map for "industry + city name" search. I'm proud of these results because I've done it myself with no prior experience.

However, I service two surrounding cities and rank around #30 for both of these cities.

I manage all of my social media profiles and have my citation listings on all of the free directories.

Is it possible to rank with very thin content?

Hi everyone,

Is Yoast the right fit for me?

Are there better tools or approaches that I could be using?

Needs

I want to make a small blog more popular and also have access to Yoast's premium features that help clean-up my blog (multiple keywords, internal linking, social media preview and some of the editing tools to help out with readability...etc).

Background

I run a small, personal blog about a niche topic (international parental child abduction) where I share reflections, tips and other related thoughts/stories. My blog has a Twitter account that discusses the subject matter with others in the community.

Yoast is something I've paid for because the free version doesn't have the whole suite of editing tools. I like the editing tools because they help me to better my language while also making the site more SEO friendly. In short, I like how it helps me to polish everything and wouldn't think twice about it if the full-featured version was free.

HOWEVER... it isn't. Every year they hit me up for $89 USD (sometimes with a 10-20% discount). I'm in Australia and our exchange rate is currently VERY unfavourable so think of it costing me more like $150 (per year) even after a discount. My salary doesn't get adjusted just because our dollar's sitting unfavourably, so I mean... it's expensive! My blog has no source of revenue and I dunno how many people read it per year but IMO it would be less than 50 people (generous estimate there - I don't wanna think about how few it might actually be).

Currently they're offering a 20% discount. When my renewal comes up they'll offer me 25% and on Black Friday (literally a week after my renewal) they'll offer 30% off (apparently only to 'new' customers... I already tried arguing "It's pretty bad look when you send out multiple 'concerned' e-mails claiming you 'reward loyalty' with your 'best deal' a week or two before you pitch an even better deal to that same person"). Anyhow, it is what it is.

I like the plug-in but end of the day:

  • Pretty much nobody reads my blog so I sorta question where my US$89 is going to.
  • I don't have a source of revenue (and wouldn't even if I setup ads/patreon...etc so IMO it'd just be tacky for me to try as it'd make it look like I'm trying to make $$$ rather than blog out of a valid personal interest).
  • Yoast as a company hasn't been particularly nice to me. The whole Black Friday thing sorta burned as they sent me a really generic e-mail with zero empathy for my situation. Sure they don't have to care but it still gave me a bad impression of what they stand for (when combined with what they'd just done to me).
  • I don't wanna close the blog or stop blogging because it's an area of personal interest. Even if literally nobody read my blog, I'd still wanna write about the topic and make my blog as accessible as possible (including for SEO).

Best strategy or go back to the drawing board?

I am currently starting the foundation for a new company. The company’s focus is business consultant & outsourced CFO roles. The firms that I have worked in the past had a smile & dial approach to bringing in business.

My approach is to have a SEO-centric website for lead gen & build out a nurturing campaign as people sign up. This will take care of the initial outreach which is very labor intensive & costly.

When it comes to marketing, I see myself more as jack of all trades and master of none so I have flirted with keywords, optimizing pages, building nurturing funnels.

I however heard that not having a .com hurts the site.

Using the influence of one site to grow another

Hello everyone!

I am coming to you because I need help on a point and I can't find the information I need on the internet.

Here's my problem:

I have two websites, the first one (site A), has a strong influence on the net, appears among the first results for my keywords, etc. But this site is very old, ugly, not opti, a galley in short.

My second site (site B) is much more recent and optimized, but has no influence on the internet, it is very far in google searches for the same keywords as site A.

What I would like in the long run is for site B to become as influential as site A, and then abandon site A.

My questions are the following: Is it possible to use the influence of site A to make site B grow, and then abandon site A?

With for example an automatic redirection from site A to site B? Is this problematic for the already created influence of site A?

And a big problem i have, is that i don't have access to the FTP of the site A, i have only a limited backoffice.

Thank you very much for your help!

Have a nice day!

YouTube link building query for May 2020

Do link building methods still work to boost YouTube rankings? if yes then which one is working best amongst comment backlinks, guest posting, RD, dir submission, and others? Also is there any other way apart from backlinks to help boost youtube rankings? I was doing some research and found that social shares and web 2.0 backlinks are still working out for ranking for keywords with high competition. GSA SER is working? Or any other free tool?

Google May Update: Your thoughts and how it affected your sites?

Mine went down about 50% and it seems to be still declining. What are your thoughts on this update?
I feel like am doing the right things with my site so am going to wait it out till the next update.
I've never had a problem with any G update except with this one. Pinterest is ranking in 2-4 spots in first page for a lot of searches. Quora is ranking a lot too. Good quality specific content pages getting outranked by genral content. Smh, am just gonna wait this out.

Solution To Fake Google Reviews

What do you folks think about a service that hires mystery shoppers to buy products/services and then reviews the business online (primarily Google)? I think it could help with two problems:

1) Customers know it's honest as it's regulated by a third party, not the business being reviewed
2) New businesses desperate for reviews could use it to get beyond a couple from friends and family

To comply with the FTC there would need to be a disclaimer at the bottom of the review, something like, "Disclaimer: Mystery shopper evaluation by (insert company name here)"

Help regarding new Web Vitals report

I have gone through several blogs wherein the details of Google's new Web Vitals report are detailed. I just analyzed my website on search console today and found that there were more than 10000 URLs with agg LCP of 4.5 seconds (which is not good). Is there anyone in this sub who could suggest me some tips on fixing this score.

Is Ahrefs keyword difficulty metric reliable?

Hello,

I've been using Ahrefs and Kwfinder for my keyword research for a while now.

However, i have noticed something weird in Ahrefs, when i find a few keywords with a 4 value keyword difficulty when i check the same keyword in Kwfinder i get a keyword difficulty of around 30-45.

This is a dilemma to me, which one of those to believe to determine the actual keyword difficulty. One says the keyword is easy the other one says it's hard.

Does anybody have a serious opinion on the matter?

Thank you

NOTE: My site is still quite new and not ranking for any content in the first page yet.

What does the code data-saferedirecturl mean on a backlink?

I received a link from someone for a guest post. After analyzing the source code, saw this in the URL:

<a href="https://domain dot com/page-name/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" data-saferedirecturl="https://www dot domain dot com/url?q=https://domain dot com/page-name /&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=159059709457500&amp;usg=AFQjNFeCDZxyxbgUZk9cwkqCQpe9RPm3Sg"

I am not a developer so don't know what it means. Is it a legit link to my site that will pass maximum juicage?

Google search console's external links show my own website

I found that the most common referral site in the external link of the Google search console shows our own site. Is this normal?

The "referral" in Google Analytics also found our own website. I checked some information and said that there may be a problem with the code. But I don't know how to find the code problem.

Thoughts on Google ads?

Hi everyone,

I hope I’m in the right place to ask this. What do you think of Google ads? Google keeps recommending me this service with $100 credit, and I checked how much it would cost me to have an ad and it was around $300 for what I wanted. Should I do it? Is it going to put my website on the front page when people search certain keywords?

Google Analytics tracking events I never created

Hi,

I just looked at my event tracking report in Google Analytics, and there are a bunch of Events it's tracking that I never created (just to be sure, I double-checked Tag Manager, and they aren't there).

It looks like every external link click on my website is automatically being tracked as an event, regardless of if I set it up in Google Tag Manager.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Anyone having issues with Yoast seo?

Been using Yoast seo, and it's been working great and im getting good scores on my web pages. Just in the last day I have added a few new pages and Yoast seems to not be detecting certain things. For example, it's no longer detecting internal links. Also, a few other things like saying that I don't have the key phrase in the introduction when I clearly do. Says I'm using more than one H1 heading, but I am not.
