Blog placement?

Hi question, I'm not a pro, just trying to help a friend. His business is new so he has no budget for SEO. I used to be a journalist so I find it fun to come up with ideas and write. I have done just enough content mill freelancing to know I'm worth way more money than they wanted to pay. But I get basic keyword research and usage.

My question is: does it matter where blog posts are, on a site? He's got 4 main pages. Home page, a gallery page with some images/text about past jobs, an about us page, and a contact page. He paid someone to put this site together in wordpress but it's just been sitting there for a few months. I don't want to break anything that's there, but I'm competent enough to make simple edits to the pages.

The template that was used lets me choose where to put blog posts. They can be in a sidebar or at the foot of the pages (and they appear on all pages this way, clicking opens them in a new window). Is there an advantage to using that? Or should I create a new page specifically for blog posts and leave them all there? Or does it really not matter because search engines just see the text content and don't care where it's located? Do search engines see having more pages as better?

Thanks for any help!
