Confused about meta description and 'first sentence'

I'm under the impression the meta description for a page should be a succinct, unique description of the page, hand-made perhaps, designed to give a user the full picture or entice them - according to Google's guides, from what I have read.

Sounds good to me.

But i've also read that the meta description should ideally be a copy of what appears in the first sentence of the page.

Is this true? Because it's a pain in the ass if if have to reconfigure every first sentence on 6-7 pages with a weirdly written descriptive blurb.
