Github repo or website?

Hi! I want to launch my open source project on websites like hacker news, producthunt, reddit and alike to get traffic, first users, and most importantly analyze their behavior and demand regarding my software.

I don't see a way of getting detailed by-channel by-user analytics about Github repos, so I'm worried that if I direct all traffic there I won't be able to know who came from what channel and what their actions were.

Would it be a better decision to make a simple website explaining the product with a link to the repo and track all link/button clicks with Google Analytics? Any other ideas on what can be done to prepare in the best way for a launch like this? Maybe put an email gathering form somewhere to start generating a list of subscribers?
