I have a couple SEMrush ranking alerts for keywords that enter or leave top 1. A few times lately I’ve gotten email alerts of one of my keywords going to 1, then immediately back to 2. This is a keyword I was ranking 1 for a long while and apparently screwed up by some website cleanup (better formatting, removing reliance on redirects as I’ve added products along the way, making urls more descriptive. Some of this work resulted in reduced count of internal link due to consolidating some separate products into variants after noticing I’d have rank 2-3 for two sizes of the same product, thinking it’d be best to combine their authority for the substantially similar products. Since then I had been sitting at 2 for a while since these changes but figured it would sort out after some weeks and google got the re-crawling and 301 re-mapping figured out.
It’s a niche market of a small number of dealers selling the same product, and everyone is using exact product description copy/paste from supplier catalogs, whereas I’ve added better structure with headers and some lists, added long tail variants and some alternative word arrangements naturally in the text, and added new info that was missing from everyone but showed up in google autocomplete. I’ve added manuals, instructions, etc trying to make the product page relevance heavy for a number of things customers would search for. One competitor has been around a long while and has substantially higher DA than anyone else though I’ve been successful sniping snippets away and clearly offering a lower price from the #2 spot on some other things which likely works in a small market. I can pretty reliably rank #2 by a healthy margin, but there’s also a healthy margin ahead of me to the established business.
Is there anything that could be triggering me back to #1 but only briefly?
