So, if you're trying to organically rank for a keyword by writing articles, but at the same time you want your homepage to show up in google, and not your articles, how is that possible?

I noticed some local businesses, wrote some really trashy keyword focused articles, and was just wondering how they got their articles not to show up while still ranking. I'm a total newbie to seo, thanks in advance for taking the time to answer.
