Tips on why a competitor is outranking me

I do SEO for a national company and one of my KW's has a competitor with the first 3 organic hits filling the serps. It goes them, them, them, me.

I like to attribute SEO on a very high level to two factors: On-page SEO and links. Do ya'll agree? I am crushing them on both accounts and they are still beating me.

What else could be missing? Three potential factors that i theorize are 1. they have keywords in their domain name (EMD) 2. they have been around way longer (older domain age) 3. they are international (they have backlinks in different languages) as opposed to me just targeting the US

I realize this is hard to answer without seeing the domains - If someone gives me a good answer here i would be willing to DM an advanced SEO the domains to do a little more digging and pay them for specific advice.
