I have built side projects for the past decade - and only in the last 4 years, I notice that I got cursed.
As a side-project builder, I always bought a new fancy domain name and later created a blog for it to get organic traffic. But my blog posts would never rank at all during this period. Not even for the target keywords or somewhere close. It was as if I was writing in another language, and Google was trying to rank me through the translator feature.
How did I solve it? My theory is content authority and silos. During that period, Google must have had an update that cracked down on the fake news and the fake articles - there was a massive blog post spinning issue, I remember. But I didn't realize. I never cared about authority or silos, though I did know that I would write a nice blog post - because I would only write what I know best - web development. But that wasn't enough, it seems.
My latest blog has some very carefully picked content silos for which I know I can deliver excellent content. And I've noticed that Google has given me some authority points, and all my blog posts are finally ranking in my intended keywords from day one!
Now there's only one weak point in my SEO: backlinks - but soon, I hope I will become good at it as well - as I get better with simpler things around SEO.
I'm hoping to help someone with this story and my experience as a non-SEO person. But I'd be happy to discuss and learn new ideas from you guys. Thanks!
