Local SEO (GMB) vs. Traditional SEO - Is there a difference?

I've been seeing a lot lately about "Optimizing Your Google My Business / Google Maps" listings as an alterative to traditional SEO methods, which has promised 'quicker' placement results.

In theory, the concept seems sound: small, service-oriented businesses would benefit more from being at the top of local business listings than they would at the top of search results.

However, I'm not sure how legitimate it is to expect to be able to optimize your listing without really focusing on your overall SEO.

Would love any feedback to shed a light on the differences (if there are any) and if it would be worth concentrating on the GMB listing instead of traditional SEO.

Thanks!
