Does the .com vs .US (for instance) matter to google in terms of SEO?

Say you have a business that is local based. For the sake of argument you have a pizza joint in NYC and the website NYCPizza.com is not available/ belongs to a competitor pizza place in NYC. Does buying the NYCPizza.US make sense and redirecting it to your actual website where all your actual on page SEO is actually residing?

The main reason i ask is: i was told by someone who ostensibly knows a good bit about SEO (granted google is always changing everything up) that the URL name can have a decent enough impact on your SEO. Is that true/ Not true and what are the nuances of what I am proposing/ asking about?

In this example I am assuming that the SEO that I would be trying to rank for (obviously this is hypothetical for the sake of example) is someone googling "Pizza In NYC"

Thanks!
