Hitting a roadblock with text content

Hey all,

Have a project that's been wracking my brain recently, would welcome some outside perspective.

Brief background: I run a small company in the UK construction industry (ground works and underpinning).

Also have a background and personal interest in design, and have tried to use it to my advantage as much as possible. Created my own brand and website years ago, as well as limited SEO as much as I could. The website preformed very well for local searches, ended up with more new clients now from my online presence than I did through word of mouth, recurring clients, ect.

New companies are popping up on google every day in my industry however, and I'm losing a lot of top spots, so I'm spending time making a new site. When it comes to branding, design, UX, ect, I'm not that concerned. But there's websites pulling ahead that from my design perspective, completely suck.

I looked at all the word count for top pages in my industry and I'm actually way lower than everyone else. My site has been there for over 10 years however. So I'm worried I'm losing any value that has. I figure I need to add more text content. What stumps me though is some of my competitors don't even speak proper english. The copy is soo bad. But they are preforming so well.

I'm not sure how to begin analysing what they're doing. It's crazy. While I have low text count ect, they are beating other people who are super try hard with blogs ect. So I am super stumped.

Worried I might be over thinking it. The problem is that I've designed and wire-framed a new site but keep procrastinating any launch because I had a big list of pages I want to write, which would end up being over 20,000 more words than I've already written - and I suck at writing.

I also don't want to get penalised for launching a new site in general, which is another concern. It's funny because when it comes to my actual work I take on fairly sizeable risk and responsibility easily. Every day. But this kind of stuff wracks my brain. Done so much reading on SEO in the past few months because of this but still feeling kind of paralysed in a way. I haven't got a clear direction with this post but would would appreciate any insight.

🍻
