How do you defend yourself from bad rankings?

We have launched a brand new website for a business which is being used to communicate with customers, in advertising, and as part of the internal tools. At the same time, our competitor, who has a site with a very similar name, but filled with fake information, is trying to discredit the new site. Some of our new customers are in fact confusing their site with ours, leading to questions and concerns.

Are there best practices for defending a web property such that it all ties together on Facebook, Google, and other socials, creating a unified image? Any suggestions on how to quickly cement one's business into the web would be highly appreciated. Thank you!
