Linkbuilding vs. Linkearning.

I'd like to hear your opinion on this topic. Google and pretty much every "SEO-Expert" tells you something like "good content will bring backlinks on its own, just create outstanding unique content blabla...". I totally agree with this point of view, but I think it is a little limited.

Let's assume you are not a tech start-up, with your hightech innovative super products. Let's assume you are selling electricity. Pure boring electricity to ordinary people in a certain country. Of course I can run a blog on my website writing about the trends in my industry like everyone else does, but let's be honest - you wont get backlinks just by writing these blog post. Maybe one day you are lucky and write about a certain trendy topic at just the right time and this post gets viral. But do you really want to sit there, writing your stuff, spending hours and hours and wait for that one moment that might not come at all?

My point is: Wheather LinkEARNING is possible (and by possible I mean that there is a realistic chance to get rewarded for your effort) or not, highly depends on your product, doens't it ?!

Of course you can establish yourself as an industry expert over a long period of time, but even in this szenario there is a maxmimum limit of experts an industry needs. Is it worth trying to become expert no. 21365 ? On the other hand, whats the alternative ..
