Have any of you dropped the idea of targetting keywords for your niche sites?

I've stopped doing that. I've realized that a natural in-depth article automatically takes care of keywords and related keyword ideas. One of the articles I wrote is in a very competitive niche. However, the topic of the article is not my niche. It is just one of the finer topics in a broader niche for me. Writing a 3k word article took care of so many related ideas and keyword variations that I've started getting impressions for even more related keywords which hardly appear in the article.

I think this takes care of 2 things:

  1. Latent semantic indexing where the meaning of an article and the overall them is better understood by google's ranking algorithm.
  2. No worry about writing to rank for a keyword; so paragraphs and heading tags flow smoothly.

I only optimize for the Title and URL.
