[Help] Crash course on SEO (even better if it includes HTML and SEM)

Hello everyone,

TL;DR: I'm surfing the web looking for a complete guide on SEO. I've checked the sidebar guides and links but I'm wondering if those links and guides are still fresh. Can anybody confirm me this? Or give me some advice?

A bit of context: 27, professional publicist (senior media planner) working for one of the "big four" media agencies.

Life took me down the traditional offline path. Even though I know the basics of online advertising, I want to make a 180° turn in my career and specialize in SEO, SEM with HTML knowledge.

Is it hard to become a "leader" in this area? How much time would it take to get the hang of it?

Thanks :)
