Learning Web development for SEO

Background: I’ve been in SEO for about a year. Often for the work I do I have to manage technical fixes to our clients’ websites. My company doesn’t do web development but we outsource it. So I have to communicate with web developers as they complete tasks I assign them.

I have no background in comp sci or web dev so sometimes I don’t know the words these foreign web dev guys are using or what they mean. Granted their English isn’t perfect.

Question: How can I go about learning the fundamentals of web dev? Especially server side and site speed, as this is closely tied to SEO.

I don’t have the budget for a college course but am willing to spend hours on an online course that’s worthwhile.

TL;DR How would you teach an SEO with no comp sci background enough web dev to work with developers?
