Question about some dodgy backlinks

Hi all.

I got a new job in an agency and am currently looking at the backink profile for a client's site through AHrefs. They've done a couple really weird things that I'd like to get some thoughts on, as this isn't something I have a lot of experience with.

Some really high DR backlinks from years ago are links to the agency's .co.uk site that were, for some bizarre reason, set to redirect to the client's site for a time. Literally clicking on a link to www.SiteA.co.uk would take you to www.SiteB.com. Completely irrelevant, and the anchor text is for our agency too.

That's already setting off massive alarm bells, as it was clearly a manipulative attempt to increase the client's site DR. On top of that, the links are now dead. We must have moved to .com without keeping the old domain and redirecting.

Have I explained that well enough? It's pretty confusing to me to be honest. I have no idea why they did this at the time.

I'm not really sure what I should about links like these, if anything? What do you think.

Thanks for your time.
