A site I have been working on has gone from 100, 200, to 500, to 800, to 1200, and not to 42,000 impresses in a day! Been working at this SEO for over a year and I am happy!

At first, I thought I was hacked but six months of quality backlink building, content creation, and site structure seem to be working. Another option is Google just fucked with their algorithm and it was my one day in the sun. Either way, I am in an SEO happy land. At first it was panic that I had been hacked, but instead some crazy impression increase.

Image Scraping spam sites hotlinking my images

Anyone ever experienced this? and if you did how did you fix or prevent this. as the links are showing up on my Google search console.

This is the reply i got from google webmaster community

You're right. The site does not work for normal users, but Googlebot is fed pages that contain hotlinked images. This is cloaking, maybe to make it hard for the domain owner to detect they have been hacked.

You can report them for spam.

It was also suggested i disavow the links.

But how do i stop these sites from hotlinking my images? Thank you.

Should all pages have a canonical tag (even when it just defaults to permalink, as per with Yoast when you leave the canonical tag field empty in the SEO settings in WP), or can you just remove the tag completely?

Hi guys

Looking for a quick bit of advice of on this, as I can't find anything that specifically answers this question.

I had a problem with a website where every page had two different canonical tags, as both the Yoast plugin and the WP page theme were creating canonical tags by default.

I couldn't find a fix within WP settings, so passed it to my developer to fix. His solution was to remove all canonical tags from all pages, but I'm questioning if this is a suitable solution, should pages still have canonical tags, even if they just default to permalink, as per what Yoast does?

At the momment, the site doesn't have any actual canonical links setup, and if these are required in the future, then as things stand this is something I will need the developer to provide a solution to.

Thanks!

SEO for Student Rental Business with Multiple Houses - Is it better to have a single landing page for each property or one website featuring all properties?

Happy Turkey Hangover All!

I'm in the middle of rebranding our DC property rental business and it's going to require a complete redesign of our current Wordpress site. While we currently enjoy a lot of good organic SERP "Juice" for our main domain, I'm considering building individual landing pages for each of our homes (each on their own separate domain).

My objective is to grab more of the first page results for the niche keywords that we already rank well for.

  • If we have a main domain that features these individual homes as well as individual sites for each home will Google consider this duplicate content and penalize us?
  • Would you recommend Wordpress multi-site if I decide to do the separate landing pages for each home?
  • Would Google penalize us if we use the same WP template for each of these landing pages?

I'm a long time lurker of this sub and always enjoy learning from you all. Muchas gracias

SEO challenge - duplicate terms, same meaning

I'm really struggling with this: the proper term for my topic is "medical cannabis", but most people search for "medical marijuana" (even here in Canada). How can I make sure I cover both bases in my content? Do I stick with one term only or do I use some kind of convention like "medical cannabis | medical marijuana"? If I use "medical cannabis (marijuana)" will that rank for people searching "medical marijuana"? Or is "medical" too far removed from "marijuana"?

SEO Spyglass vs Moz Pro: Which is better for finding competitor backlinks?

Reverse engineering competition backlinks, I know there is Semrush, Ahrefs and others, but I've narrowed down my decision to SEO Spyglass and Moz Pro.

I like Spyglass because it's a one-time $125 cost, then just $4 for each month. Plus it looks pretty comprehensive in breaking down the comp's secret sauce. Also like their Link Assistant service, but that's not what this is about.

I like Moz Pro because most reviews have it finding the most backlinks (ie. new opportunities). However, the level I'd be interested in is $99/month and that's their entry point.

Anyone here used either of these with a relative amount of success?

Advise on local SEO when no physical address.

Guys hi, could you please advise how to approach the following ?

We do different types of tours in specific location (let’s call it “location”) and target keywords:

location bicycle tours

location walking tours

location segway tours

Neither we no our competitors have physical location at targeted area cause rent is very expensive (we just deliver bicycles / segways for the tour there) that’s why we currently do not have google places listing and just use google ads to bid on above mentioned KWs. (basically no local seo)

However one of our competitors created 2 google places listings named Location Segway Tours and Location Segway Tour, somehow he managed one of them to be listed at location address he does not have (it’s not real address at all, it just interesection of avenue and street) and now any time user searches for location segway tours his google place listing is showing up in the right top (like if user is searching for his company).

Another competitor also created google places listing names Best Segway Tour Services and also managed to be listed in address he does not have. So now any time user is searching for location segway realted KWs it’s showing on the map (together with 2 google places listings mentioned abvove).

It effects us a lot.

What are our options ? What would you recommend ?

Seeking some SEO advice

Hello everybody. I would like to ask you for advice on this one. I need to create a website to promote my freelancer services and I need to do it in English and Greek.

1) I would rather create a single page that you need to scroll down to that presents each separate content area, rather than a website with separate pages for each content area. Which option is best for SEO?

2) Is it better to create a separate language version in terms of CEO? I would rather write the Greek text and then the English translation directly underneath.

Thanks everybody!

Majority of traffic reporting as direct

Within analytics most of the traffic is being report as a direct referral whereas I think it is actually from one of my other sites.

Both sites are HTTPS sites. I'm helping a friend with this so I'm not sure if it is HTTPS from Let's Encrypt or SSL By Default. I'm using the BuiltWith app to gain this data.

The link on the site is setup as domain.com not as https://domain.com - does this matter? should the https be fully typed out on the website? - How about other instances such as email?

I also think there should be more email referrals of which there are practically none. This is why I think the issue is a HTTPS/HTTP one.

I'm sort of thinking all domain.com links are directed to http for some reason which then auto-directs https. When domain.com should bypass http and go straight to https (not redirect from).

How do I bypass this http?

or am I totally confused?

Is it possible to rehabilitate a domain previously used for porn?

I recently spent almost four figures on a domain that I felt was undervalued, but had I done my research I might have thought again. It's a DA50 .com domain that should have decent appeal in an active niche, but... it's link profile is pretty grim, 2000-odd referral visits today, 404s to pornographic videos it was hosting. It doesn't read like a porn domain but I believe it was a Mega or WeTransfer competitor back in the day, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was shut down.

Can I rehab this domain? As an authority domain it's proving effective - I optimised for some keyphrases in the niche and it ranked nicely. My plan is to build a brand around it and produce solid content in the niche, try to generate a bit of ad and affiliate link revenue before flipping the domain, but I'm not sure there's any way back since it has such a sketchy history?

I'd welcome any insight, even if it's to tell me I'd have been better using the cash to pay for Christmas. ;)

I'd like to create a search engine that does these things. Is there something out there that I could use to do this with?

These are the things that I want it to do.

  1. Search within my industry only
  2. Eliminate links and sites from recruiters and certain sites
  3. Eliminate results from affiliates or pages containing affiliates links
  4. Be able to block certain pages manually.
  5. Possibly eliminate links altogether and so the engine just spits out an answer vs. a link and description

Any ideas on how I could implement this? IDK if there are extensions for word press, drupal or joomla to do this, but probably not so is there a open source software that could do this?

Are too many Google reviews at once a problem?

Just got my local business verified by Google My Business and wanted to start asking family and friends to leave reviews. I'm worried that Google might penalize me or delete reviews thinking they are fake. Is there a best practice in terms of how many and how often reviews should be added.

Should I set a schedule with when they should post reviews ?

How to get those impressions to stabilize!?

Hey, r/SEO

I have a car blog up and running and recently I started to publish articles for the year 2020.

This created a spike in impressions on particular days. My question is:

How do I stabilize those impressions?

I used to get 25-30 impressions per day but these articles got me 150/day.

Any strategies I can use while publishing and updating content on my website?

Visibility on traffic from Google

Hey guys. Today we got a ton of traffic to one article. More than 20,000 uniques. We have had this before but there was a difference: I could go to Google News and see the article there. With this one, it was nowhere to be seen, except for when I clicked News on this particular keyword, which I expect no one really does. In Analytics , lots of traffic was coming from news.google.com. SO where was it? Is it not showing it to me?

Back link Dilemma

Hi everyone,

We’ve been focusing more on our website’s SEO these last few months, and using an online tool came across 3000+ unwarranted back links from dud, spammy or foreign websites that have not been requested or purchased. This is my own business website and I definitely have not paid anyone for shotty ‘back link services’. Anyone know how this could have come about and what steps to take?

Thanks!

Local SEO: Is soliciting reviews via social media influencers a good strategy?

I noticed recently that a local coffee shop here was using influencers on social media to solicit reviews, and I was wondering if that is a viable option for local SEO? I've tried both Birdeye and Grade.us, and while they have been semi-successful, this business was able to get over 100 5-star reviews in one day. Has anyone else tried this method? If people leave a positive review, should I ask my followers to add thumbs-up to each one?

You don't need a keyword tool

If you didn't know go to google and start typing in your query and it will show variations of this. And you can check the searches related to at the bottom of the page too.

I feel like someone is always sending me to some tool to check it out or whatever.

For example, some have suggested ubersuggest or keywordtool.io or recently I found answerthepublic but every time I go there they don't show me anything that I haven't seen by just going to google and typing in the keyword and playing around with autosuggest.

I've played around with other tools and they just seem to be a waste of time to me.

I like Brian Dean and Neil Patel and I've learned quite a bit from them, but I feel like they are always referring me to some tool to check out and then I get there and don't really find much of anything interesting.

Maybe these tools can help some people, but I don't really see them as all that advanced.

Keyword Research Tools Showing Me Two Completely Different Search Volumes

I've been getting drastically different search volumes for different keywords when comparing SpyFu and Moz's Keyword Search/Google Keyword Planner. For example, one keyword I search up on SpyFu says 400 searches per month, but then both Moz and Google Keyword Planner both say 0-10.

Does this mean that SpyFu is inaccurate? I've used SpyFu before and I haven't encountered this problem.

Make Your Site Show In Other's Analytics (Direct)

Hi, I realize this may be a beginner question. I am a writer first and a student of SEO second.

I want other sites to know how much traffic I am giving them through my articles. How can I get traffic from my article to show up as "Direct - mydomainname" instead of "Direct - none" in THEIR analytics? I have a UTM link builder program (utm.io), which I am learning to use but I'm not sure if that only works for MY analytics (to track outbound traffic) or if they would have to build their own links for inbound traffic. Or does it work for both?

Can someone confirm my UTM builder suspicion, or redirect me to the correct way to do this (if there even is one)? Thank you for even reading :)

Think something is wrong - need help / ideas

I have a new site I've been developing. The keywords I am targeting are fairly competitive - say 60-70 out of 100. I've run speed tests and I am better than all the sites on page 1 - many by a good margin. On page SEO scores from a variety of free services are better than all but one of the sites on page 1. Over the past 2-3 weeks I've found some good / relevant blogs and have been able to comment and get a number of links, I've linked from an older website I own, contributed to a couple wikihows, set up Google Search Console and registered my sitemap with Google, Bing and all the small search engines.

My site is new and the domain is less than 3 months old. My social accounts for the site are new and don't have many followers. Semrush, Search Console and one or two other free services don't show any backlinks - though I know they are there and I can google the link text and find them.

At this point the new site doesn't even show up in a search, even though the name of my domain is almost exactly the search term I am targeting. I am feeling fairly certain that I have either 1) done something very wrong, or 2) have way to high of an expectation of where I should rank at this point - maybe some of both.

Any advice or counsel is appreciated.

Duplicate content issue for client in the event's space

I've got a client who is in the tours/events space, as they also use MeetUp and EventBrite to publish their content for

events. All of the content that is published for events on their website also exists on MeetUp and EventBrite.

Not only that, but they also use an API to pull the info from EventBrite to display for events on their website.

This is obviously a 1-to-1 copy of the existing content that's already out there. I'm trying to find a way to work around this, and curious if any other similar companies had this issue and how they

solved it.

One solution would be to have EventBrite and MeetUp canonicalize that event information, and hardcore it on the client's

site. The issue being, neither of these platforms will canonicalize or no-index that content for obvious reasons.

It seems a bit counter-productive to have the client also re-build new content around events. Then there would be an additional page added that would exist between their own event page, or even if they linked out to MeetUp or EventBrite.

I'm curious if there are any creative ways on how to handle this situation from other businesses who have been in a similar situation.

The obvious objective here is to ultimately rank event pages in Google, but that can't be done with the current setup.

Appreciate any insights

Is the scheduling app affecting our site's Google ranking?

We had excellent results back in July, usually top 3, and then we had a major drop off. I suspect we've been sandboxed but I cannot figure out why. Every time I submit my sitemaps it comes back "cannot be indexed" with http 503 error.

Two of us have tirelessly searched worked to figure out what the issue is (outdated Word Press themes, indexing issues, we've contacted our server support) and we cannot find the problem.

Now I'm wondering if these issues are being caused by an appointment scheduler we've integrated into the site called Jane App. When we search the site on Google, the website through the Jane App still appears as the second result.

Is it possible that this Jane App appointment scheduler is competing with our site and we got suppressed because of it? How can we fix this?

Webpage not showing up on Google

Hello all,

I know I can’t expect many hits right now, as I don’t have any back links, but I can’t even search for the exact name of the website and have it show up on google. Do "

The list can be anything, such as "best products for x that have been developed in 2019".

My argument is since it's almost the end of the year, the list has the potential to include the best content that happened in 2019. And until q2 2020 the article will remain relevant because people are still going to visit the article due to the same argument, - the new list can't be populated for 2020 yet.

What do you guys think?

Edit: Just to clarify, I'm already seeing people doing 2020 lists and that's why I'm asking.

Help: Different search results Chrome App Android vs Chrome Address Bar

I've been doing a lot of SEO work lately, specifically trying to understand shifts in guides for a video game website. Typically, we rank high. Our on-page SEO is sound and similar to our competitors. Additionally, our content is of similar caliber as our competitors.

I've noticed that our content ranks differently based on searching for it using the Chrome App for Android versus using the Chrome address bar at the bottom of my Android phone. Is there a logic that contributes to this, either from Google's perspective or how we are arranging and creating content?

For example, on the Chrome App for Android, I can perform a more organic search and return a guide in question within the top 3 results. However, I cannot use the same search term in the Chrome address bar at the bottom of the screen and return the same results. In fact, I cannot find the article in question at all.

Further compounding confusion, a competitor's site ranks in the 0 and 1 position on page 1 for the same query in both locations.

Positioning for our site seems extremely volatile. This morning, I checked the results for the same query on both the App and Address bar. The App returned the article in question on page 1 second position. The address bar didn't return it at all.

20 minutes later, as I'm writing this post, I checked again using the same query in both areas. Now, the app is returning page one third position and the address bar is returning page 1 second position.

Any insight at all would be appreciated as I'm confounded at this point.

How I Turn My Website Visitors Into Subscribers

"How do I capture my website visitors?" should always be at the back of your mind.

All the effort you put in bringing traffic through organic and paid means goes to waste if you don't have the means to capture them.

There are multiple ways to capture visitors. I have a couple of them implemented on my own website.

👉 Newsletter Signups I have this only on my homepage. Anyone who signup through it gets free access to paid content on my site and a welcome bonus ebook.

I email this list once or twice a week.

👉 Push Notifications I have a Digital Marketers News page on my website. I cover latest updates and trends on different platforms under it.

I enable an option for my website visitors to subscribe to push notifications if they would like to receive alerts on new updates.

👉 Chatbots I prefer using Chatbots to give away free resources to my website visitors. I love the automation that's involved.

I use Manychat to capture both subscribers and their emails. I use mandatory email input before giving them access to resource. I sync these emails to Mailchimp.

This combination works great for me. I started gaining traction when I had them all in place.

Find the easiest way to capture your visitors. Implement today.

Importance and relevance of backlinks

My company is ending a marketing relationship with another company. One thing they've been doing to boost our SEO is creating advertisement pages with various domains with the same base domain. For instance, my domain is abcompany.com and they'll create summersale.abcompany.com. We have about 5 to 10 of those that will go away. First, how effective are domains with your domain in them as backlinks? Does Google recognize them as unique domains or your domain? Second, are 5 to 10 backlinks significant? We're not getting much traffic off them.

As an app developer, what can I do to generate more mobile web traffic?

I am a developer of a mobile application. Together with my team, we set up a website where people can learn more about the app and download it. However, it is not the app itself but the articles published on the website (thematically related to our application) that generate the biggest traffic. It’s ok, the real problem is that most of our users visit our website/read the articles in the desktop version. What it means is that it is twice as difficult for us to make them download the app.

Simple Process I Use To Rank Content

This is how I outranked competitors with a new domain in 2 months.

This is a simple process I follow for all my clients. It just needs consistent work, time, and patience.

Here's the process

👉 Keywords I don't go with keywords. I rather go with queries.

Pick your keyword. Grab all the frequently asked questions related to that keyword and build content.

Structure your content the best possible way.

Long-tail keywords will make way for the domain to rank for short competitive keywords that share the same intent.

👉 Content size If your domain isn't strong enough to compete against your competitors then content size does matter.

I usually go with 4000+ words.

👉 Media and Retention Bounce rate and Time on the page are 2 important metrics I consider.

Creating content that holds the user's attention is what your focus must be. This will involve including relevant media and helpful elements that encourage them to read until the end.

👉 Internal Links and External Links Including relevant links to external sites is considered a good practice. Internal links to relevant content or cluster content are always helpful.

👉 Backlinks The crucial stuff. Build at least 25 to 50 links. I go with a ratio of 30% follow and 70% nofollow links.

👉 Update the Content I update the content the following months along with it's publishing date. This simple step helped me push ranks by 5 position last time.

👉 Additional Action Always have an additional action to be performed at the end. I always have a free resource to capture visitors.

From keyword research the search strategy of consumers is very straight forward. It is either "buy glasses in Prostějov" or "opticians shop Prostějov" and variations with quality/price/etc... I am working on backlinks (about 4 right now with local hospital, town news etc.)

But how can I improve the page rank when nobody will even be able to find it in the firts place (on 6th position)? How to kickstart the process?

Thank you

Do "third-party" redirects help main website SEO?

Hi all, i work at a small company with a single website.

My boss brought in a project manager, who wants to redirect a handful domains that we own, but do not use (they also have no content at all) to our main website - which is not a bad idea I guess since all of the domains are on services we provide - but she claims it would help SEO on our main website.

Is this true or just BS?

Would appriciate some help.

Audit issues: Broken internal images

So I have issues with SEMRush. I found out we have 376 images with broken internal images. Now this is unfortunate and clicking onto the link of the URL, it leads to a 403 forbidden page.

Any idea how this is solved? The images are perfectly in their placing and there are no missing images upon checking. It's just weird to show up like that.

Question about image alt-text descriptions

Hi all, I have a licensed apparel website that I am trying to drive traffic to. An example of a product title is "Bud Light Budweiser Logo Beer Pattern All Over Men's Button Up T Shirt". What would be the more optimal alt text, the title of the product or instead "budweiser men's button up t shirt". Thanks.

Transitioning from Squarespace to Wordpress

I have read some posts on this topic but I would like some feedback on best practices for transitioning a Squarespace site to a wordpress site. I set up a small squarespace site and am producing a few blog post and am doing the basic seo outreach for these posts. I currently have 0 html technical knowledge however, I plan on getting better with css/html and creating a wordpress site so I have some more functionality (Squarespace is very barebones) at my disposal to grow the site.

My question is, if I have other websites linking to my blog pages and then I switch to Wordpress, I am assuming that the URL structure will be different and thus the links pointing to the old blog post will be useless. This has made me hesitant to spend any time with link building for my squarespace site because when I transition, I will lose all positive effects.

Am I correct in thinking this, or can 301 redirects be a simple solution?

Are there any domain and hosting deals you recommend right now?

I figured now would be a good time to get some throwaway domains and run a couple of experiments.

Will there be negative effects if URL doesn't have commonly searched terms?

I'm starting a mental health agency. There is some debate over whether the URL should be SkateWestTherapy.com or SkateWestBehavioralHealth.com

I'm of the opinion that no one is searching 'I need help with behavioral health' they are only searching 'I need a therapist'

Will we be hurting ourselves if we go with SkateWestBehavioralHealth? TIA

Is There A Tool To Break Down Anchor Text by Type? (i.e. Branded, Generic, Naked and so on)

Is there a tool out there that breaks down backlink anchor text by type?

  • Branded
  • Naked URL
  • Exact Match
  • Partial Match
  • Generic

I thought Ahrefs did this, but I couldn't seem to find it.
