About two months ago, I started building an online tool that scrapes event data from a bunch of different training websites and “rolls it up” into a sortable directory. I realize that may not sound exciting but, since I can’t link to the site here (per the rules), I should mention that this is in an industry that is relatively unsavvy at tech.
In a nutshell, it’s a Ruby on Rails: scrapers on the backend, data is cleaned up and then easily sorted on the front-end. I’m taking a bunch of unstructured event data and cleaning it up to make things easier to find for the people that want it.
According to Google Analytics, my search traffic is converting at double the average site conversion rate... and that’s without having done any sort of real optimization on my part. A conversion is simply an double opt-in email signup.
So, here’s my question as a noob SEO’er: if you were starting with a new domain, what are the low hanging fruit for targeting more search traffic?
For now, I’ve created separate “roll ups” that optimize for people searching specific types of courses. Should I be creating roll ups by state (since my target user won’t travel far for these courses)?
And where do all these additional keyword/keyphrase pages go? Adding them to the top menubar seems like it would get cluttered quickly. Do I just include them in the sitemap without placing links in the site itself? Or maybe I should put the links in the footer?
It’s possible that I’m overthinking the whole thing. Googling this very topic, as you all probably know, seems to result in a bunch of differing advice, etc.
