I'm working on two large ecomm sites, each with more than 10,000 products and dozens or even hundreds of different categories. Both of these sites rank very well for many of their top keywords, but both want to improve.
One site has all its 10,000+ products together in the same subdirectory in the site structure. (Basically in a /p/ (for product) directory).
The other site has its 10,000+ products within a deep (siloed) structure with each product going into a logical and appropriate subdirectory. Its 600 men's shirts are listed together within the men's shirts' subdirectory, and so forth. This site has nothing deeper than 3 levels, and click-depth is under control.
Here's the question: Is there a clear winner between flat vs. deep product URLs? Would you advise the flat site to go deep? Would you advise the deep site to go flat? Would you advise against changing either site? If so, why? (If you know of any solid sources to read, or if you have personal experience, I'd be very interested).
It would take quite a bit of work for either site to change, so if you would recommend going through the work, a strong case for making the change would be helpful. I already have my thoughts (that deep is better as long as it's not too deep), but I'm very curious what the consensus is.
What do you think? Thanks!
