Hi there! Longtime lurker, first time posting.
In December I attended several free SEO workshops at Google. In addition to working as a filmmaker/photographer, I've been developing sites since I was 15 years old – for extra income... so I was already familiar with SEO but I wanted to learn more and improve my appearance in search (I have 4 personal websites related to my projects, in addition to client work). Long story short, one of the biggest takeaways from the Google workshops was that Google penalizes pages with a low word count. My teacher said it's best to aim for a target of 500 words on every page, with lots of links pointing across the site (they called this "Google juice"). I implemented their lessons and within 2 weeks, my portfolio homepage jumped to the no. 1 results in several search terms (before it was around #7 or #8 on the first page of Google results). All I did was add a lot more text and relevant H1 and H2 headlines to my homepage. It felt like magic. I beat a lot of established filmmakers for film-related keywords just by adding more text. My "competitors" on page 1 had landing pages with just photos or embedded videos and very few words...
Now, I'm about to overhaul my photography portfolio inside my site and I'm afraid that it may not perform well because many photos - even compressed - can slow down the page load speed (another key factor I was told). Plus, I don't know what to do to maintain the 500 word minimum on a photo portfolio section. Do you have any advice/recommendations as to what to do?
