Best Practises for links created via viruses

Hi!

What are the best practises regarding links created by hacks/virus’s on websites?

I had a site hack a few months ago, which created a lot of sub pages beginning with ‘/xhshr67/‘ - I deleted those pages. I’ve noticed recently my ranking has dropped, and am wondering if it’s because I put a 301 redirect to direct all traffic going to the ‘/xhshr67/‘ pages to go to the home page. Are they better going to my 404 page?

Also, there were quite a few external sites linking to the hacked pages that I deleted. Could this be part of the drop in SERP rankings?

Is there a way I can tell google that any of the requests to the dodgy links (which are still showing up in google searches for my site) need to be removed?
