I often think Google updates are to stop people learning Google algorithm.
If they bounce sites up and down enough, it creates confusion on what SEO works.
I've used webmaster tools for years and find my sites bounce around every day, some updates put the sites up the rankings for a while, then some months they go down.
It's seems like a deliberate fog that Google creates to stop you learning what works.
I also believe that if you do some things to your site, that helps in the serps, you get an artificial penalty to send your rankings down for a while.
What do you fellow SEOs think?
