How do you create super high-quality content that actually stands out?

Just writing long-form content isn't enough nowadays to stand out. It seems like in crowded niches, every angle has already been done to death, and there are massive, tome-like how-to guides and repositories of info that dominate search rankings, complete with infographics, videos, etc.

How can you beat those sites or those pieces of content?

Are we moving towards more original research that's not just regurgitating/curating content from multiple sources into one 1,500+ word page? I know that some of my clients are experimenting with doing advertorials. For example, a lawyer client wants to do long-form interviews with local people in related industries (nurses, paramedics, firefighters, etc.), because those are obviously 100% original and probably more compelling than "here's how we can help you" blogs.

But that type of content isn't cheap, and it's time-consuming. Is that the way to go? It really seems like truly valuable content that stands out almost has to be a graduate-level thesis or dissertation or research project these days, taking weeks or even months to build. Which is obviously expensive and requires a certain level of expertise, or at least strong writing and research skills.

How do you guys approach content in a cost-efficient manner, especially in crowded niches with content saturation? Is it actually worth worrying about at this point, or is it more cost effective to rank using other methods and rely on "standard" or "pretty good" content?
