Search engine counting as Backlink?

I’m new to SEO and I have a question.

I’m analyzing a competitor’s backlink profile and I noticed that every page I look up, they have dofollow strong DR Backlinks from a site called gmx.com

So I followed the link and it’s an email service with a search engine, which works just like any other and will provide results to my competitor when I search the keyword.

So do search engine results count as Backlinks? I’m obviously not seeing ones like Bing or Yahoo, but why GMX.com. What am I missing here.
