Wix sucks for SEO...but what about GMB

So I've been using wix for my local business for the last 2 years. Didn't really know about this SEO stuff until recently and have been trying to learn. I hear that wix is terrible for SEO, but does that also apply to Google My Business ranking?

Im just wondering if wix hurts your chances to rank in that top 3 gmb.

Rankings Tanked After Changing URL Structure: Normal? How Long?

TLDR: I changed url structure on my MediaWiki-based site to the structure used by Wikipedia and other wikis, which seems to be the recommended approach. However, site views seem to be down a good amount overall. Rankings MAY have suffered, but I also have more articles actually being picked up by Google now, so that may be why that's happened in the short term. I've heard this is often a problem in the short term but eventually corrects itself. The site was quite small and basically under the radar, so it makes no difference at this stage of the game. How long did this drop in views last for you, if it happened at all?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey everyone. I have a MediaWiki based website and have slowly added content for a while now but I've mostly been neglecting it. However, a couple months ago, I noticed some actual incoming traffic. Not much, but clearly people were finding the site, which is great!

However, one thing I planned on doing for a while before I added anything further, was to change my URL structure from the default (which is pretty sloppy and familiar to those who have used MediaWiki), to the "mywikidotcom/wiki/page_title" that Wikipedia and pretty much any other wiki (including Wikia and Fandom) sites use. It took some research on how to set up the rewrites and all that stuff, but hey, it all seemed to work just fine!

Next up was finding a better way for Google to actually see my pages. Before recently, I had about 80 articles on the wiki. However, the free sitemap makers were refusing to find all of them. All in all, only about 40-50 were actually being indexed. BUT, with all of those, I had some decent performers, so again, I saw some promise!! What I decided to do was put a link on the front page "Linking to all articles" on the site. I then copied the list of articles within the site and manually linked to all of them within a single article. Proper way to do it? I don't know, but now, every single page was being picked up correctly!

It took a while to all come up in Search Console. Right now, I've got about 92 or so articles (excluding redirects). Search Console picked up maybe 50+ the first week, and after almost a month now, everything is showing up. Great! Except, site views are now way down. I was only seeing about a couple dozen daily views, but now it's more like under 10, with a couple higher spikes here and there. Overall rankings seem to have dropped, however since I now have more articles showing up in search console, that kind of makes sense in a way, so I wasn't worried about that. Is this anything to worry about overall? Could it have more to do with something like "Priority" in sitemap? I am thinking of messing with those manually because the auto sitemap generators don't seem to give them proper priority between page types..

Whats your thoughts on AI generated blog content?

I own a few blog sites that I use for backlinks for my SEO clients.

My current method of getting content writers and editors to write, proof read, and post works well but it does take time and obviously you need to pay everyone involved.

As a test I made 5 demo sites and used an AI content writer on each of them. I then compared the results to articles my staff had written and they only slightly under performed.

The blogs themselves lacked some technical information which my editors could put in but overall they made sense and were informative.

Most are ranking well on Google and are giving good domain authority back links.

I was almost scarily surprised at how easy it was and how good the results were. I am still sticking to the traditional method for now but when I can click a button and have 20 articles written for me, I can just pay someone to proof read them which cuts the cost and time down by 90%.

Is anyone else considering getting AI generators to write the content for blog sites?

It feels very wrong and unethical so I am hesitant but do you think this is going to be the new normal? If people start auto generating hundreds of articles a week it will be near impossible to keep up with manual work and these AI blogs will take over the front page. Will Google ever have a way to catch these? I ran the blogs through unique content testers and none of them got flagged for duplicate/stolen content

Internal Links SEO Question

Hey there!

just checked the google search console for links. And I got a little confused with my internal links. I read on a few pages that having 100 internal links on one site is considered a lot. Now it seems like I got 300+ internal links on some of my smaller pages with less than 100 words in them (like a testemonial). I looked at the links and I have no idea how they got there. I never put them there nor do I see them when i view the page. But they show up on the Search Console.

Is that normal? Can that damage my site authority or even count as spam?

Using Same SEO Techniques With Wildly Different Results

Morning all

I'm a wedding photographer in the UK and have been hitting SEO pretty hard over the last 5 months, seeing as I've had no work.

Most SEO work is spent optimising blog posts for different wedding venues all over the country. I use the same SEO techniques for every one of my blog posts (keywords, alt tags, title tags, inbound/outbound links, etc etc) but have noticed that while some posts are showing on page 1, others aren't even in the top 20 pages.

I know that some venues will be more popular and it'll be harder to rank higher for these keywords, but some of the posts that are ranking high, are still popular venues.

Does anyone have advice for when your SEO strategy works for some posts, but not for others? I've kinda hit a wall when it comes to trying to get some of these posts to rank better. Can't think of anything else to try.

Cheers!

Outbounding Linking

Hi, just a quick one.

I’m still quite new to SEO. One of our blog posts receives a high number of clicks each month, ranking no.1 on Google for our target keyword. I have built up a number of links to it and update it regularly.

I was recently contacted to do a link exchange from a high DA site. Naturally, they want a dofollow link from this high volume blog post.

Will doing this have a harmful affect on the SEO for our post? Will I be passing on the ‘link juice’?

Apologies if this is a dumb question, thanks.

Is it worth starting on a free WordPress site? Advice please!

So I did a lot of keyword research and article mapping as well as on my game on the niche topic I picked but I haven't started yet due to not having enough yet for a yearly subscription and I figured monthly would be kinda stupid because it takes a lot of work and time before you can rank.

Is this thought process correct? Could I start with a free site and migrate it to a paid one later if both are WordPress? Or will I fall out of rank immediately so as so make it pointless?

What would be better from a standpoint of rankings?

Posting an unfinished, not optimized page and then continue working on it as time continues or waiting to publish a page and then publish the fully optimized page.

Effect of Iframes on a key page

I'm currently working with a client in the motorhome hire industry, building them a website from the ground up. One of the pages they really wanted on the site was a routes page where people hiring their motorhomes could look at potential great driving routes.

I agreed and we started out building routes manually with an a-b mapped image.

They've now said they want interactive maps where people can zoom in for features etc. They've found a 3rd party who's website does this (allows users to upload their favourite routes with pictures etc and others to download the coordinates into their GPS etc.

I've added one of the maps to the site using an iframe and it looks great, and does the job, but when I've sat and thought about it, I'm concerned whether it will have a negative impact on overall SEO / render the page neutral on what has the potential to be a great traffic driving page for them.

Any thoughts?

Too late to blog on website?

So I have an education recruitment website for students wanting to apply abroad. It is up an running for two years with moderately low traffic.

I want to make the site now an authority on information for new students travelling abroad, with blog posts. Is it too late for Google to rank my site well? I plan on commiting to good content regularly updated, but I think I heard it said that if I don't put most of the blogs up on my site within 3 months, it wouldn't rank well with Google's algorithm.

If this is the case, what if I moved domains, so my website got pulled down and moved somewhere else. Would that be seen as a fresh site with Google?

Final question. How does Google know that a domain name is a new site. For example I have hello.com for five years and it's a junk site. I don't renew th domain and someone else buys th same. They use the name to make a great site. Would my bad reputation from hello.com transfer to the new owner or not? Thanks guys

Why Does My Website Builder Keep Renaming My Photos

Hello,

For some reason the website development platform I use, called duda, keeps adding letters and numbers to my image file names after I upload them. For example, lets say I download a stock photo and save it as baseball-players.jpg.. once I upload it to my site, duda names it baseball-players-1920w.jpg. Duda specifically adds "1920w" to the end of all the photos.

Why is this and how can I fix it? Will it have much of an effect on my seo?

I recently had a project go viral and generate a lot of press, with links from forbes, wsj, business insider, mashable, the verge, etc. UR 43 DR 27. The domain itself is about a week old, and only has a single page so isn't ranking for more than 5 kw at the moment.

Any idea how much I'd be able to sell the domain for, and where?

Trying to rank in 2 areas - create 2 separate GMB profiles for the same business?

I have a google my business question. So I have a service business that services multiple towns in the same (one) county. Currently on my GMB profile it has the names of the areas that I service. But... Should I create a totally seperate GMB profile for the other town so I rank highly in both locations? What I mean is... change my current (and only) GMB profile from

SWM43’s Window & Pressure Cleaning

To:

SWM43’s Window & Pressure Cleaning - Jonesville, NY

And then create another GMB profile

SWM43’s Window & Pressure Cleaning - Jacksonville, NY

Or do I need a physical location for both areas?

Auto Accident SEO question

Hello fellow SEOs and SEMs,

I work on multiple campaigns for doctors and auto accidents tend to be one a campaign type we work on from an SEO and SEM. One of the search terms I see in Google Search Console and Google Ads Search Terms is "auto accident yesterday" and "auto accident today".

Anybody have any insight to people looking up auto accidents from the day prior or today? Lawyers are the only ones I can think of.

Any input or insight would be apprenticed.

What is an ideal Keyword Difficulty score for a new blogger (food niche)?

Using free keyword search tool on Ahrefs and I’m just starting my blog. What is the ideal KD score for me to aim for (1-100)?? I was thinking of trying to aim for 20 or below KD with at least 1,000 monthly searches but I’d like a second opinion. Again, I’m a new blogger and I’m gonna launch probably around the new year and when I start I’ll have very little backlinks and all.

Need Advice to Beat my Work!!

Long story short. I work for a car dealership. They have given all the internet leads to one salesmen and all of the other salespeople have voice how unfair it is and the dealership thinks it’s funny that he sells 7 times as many cars. Anyways I actually run a videographer and photography business on the side and created my own website for a few of me and the sales people. They think it’s funny that I believe I can steal the leads back. What’s the best way to get in front of them on google. I put the dealership name in the website I built thinking that would help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Weird Update by google I guess. I'm ranking at the top

Just thought I'd share this with you. A very interesting experience.

Background: My site is exactly a month old and we post thrice a week. No backlinks and no special attempt at keyword research or SEO. But articles are highly knowledgeable.

Yesterday, I was ranking on the 4th page for my own site name. That too an article was ranking, not the actual site. And today suddenly I'm ranking on the top of the SERP's. I'm just awestruck.

I have a friend from reddit whose site was also on 40th position till yesterday but today ranks at 3rd position below his own facebook page at the 1st and 2nd position.

One of our articles also got a featured snippet.

I'm jumping!

Any of you had the same experience??

What are my option? 301 Redirects from old site to new site

Hi, I have an old website selling some products, however, a new website has been made and I now need to redirect each product on the old website (and the home page) to their respective product on the new website. What is the best way to do this?

The domain is hosted with GoDaddy, but they do not allow you to redirect specific pages within a website. I have used Cloudflare in the past, but I would need to pay a monthly fee to add more redirect rules.

Another concern is that once the redirects are done, the old website will go offline and so will the SSL certificate. Once the SSL certificate expires, I have had previous issues where the browser displays an "unsafe connection" page when it tries to redirect from the old (non-https) page to the new https page.

If anyone here could help me out in any way, or point me to someone who could help me (a company or person), then I would be very grateful.

These tips can be anything from SEO or project management tools you'd advise using, how to balance workload, other key areas to focus on bringing in qualified leads (that isn't just PPC or SEO), what other skills you've learnt that compliments being an SEO, what tactics are more time-wasting than valuable, what are some rules you learnt hard and fast etc.

User intent + word count in top 10 posts

Hey guys, I'm doing a review post and I was just curious what you all think about this subject.

I was taking a look over at my competition, and they are writing paragraph after paragraph of useless information for a DESK and they have 6k words in a low competition longtail.

I am almost done with mine and have done a better job (or at least IMO) in around 3000 words. Is my only hope ever to match the guy? The fact this guy wrote a research paper while recommending desks to people makes me think they're a bit out of touch, not to mention the formatting is awful.

Making sense of SEMRush data? Resources?

I figure this might be easier than me posting every single question I'd ever have about SEMRush, but...I'm just having so much confusion making sense of some of this data. Is there any good resource I can use when I have some random questions making sense of some of this data?

For instance, I tried doing a domain overview of our site, and it's listing that we've had no organic traffic for quite some time. I know this can't be true, because we look at Search Console and Analytics every day. Is this because we don't generate traffic from keywords in their database? We're a small, niche operation. But I can't just bug Reddit every time I have a question.

I also see so many errors regarding broken pages on the site, but both http and https versions of the site work fine. And in addition to that, I see such a HUUUGE discrepancy of keyword volume from both versions of the site as well. Every day with our trial is a new issue that I'm worried is preventing our site from getting the kind of eyes it needs. It's like...no one is contacting us via Google. And it wasn't always that way. In July, we couldn't stop the traffic from coming in! And now it's virtually nonexistent.

Anyway, does anyone have any advice as to how to make sense of some of this information? I'm sure I can't just bug SEMRush whenever I have a question, but some of this data is making me think that we have a lot more work to do than I realized. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks so much.

Why does my Woocommerce site index/rank locally so much faster than my Shopify one?

Same product, same search query, two different types of local retailers (woocommerce site is wholesale, shopify is B2C online and in store (7 locations)).

I noticed my woocommerce wholesale GMB gets indexed and ranked extraordinarily fast on the 3 pack for new product searches, while the shopify B2C site takes weeks/months for any of the retails to appear. I don't have an issue ranking the shopify site for online B2C serp for these products, so it's frustrating not seeing them on the 3 pack.

Any ideas?

When using web 2.0 sites is it best to link all of them together and have the main one link to your own site or is having them all pointing to your main site okay?

Which is better?

Sorry the editor lost the format.

Example 1

my site

(Links) 8 8 8 8 8 8 8

(Web 2.0) article article article article article article article

Example 2

my site

(Link) 8

(web 2.0) main article

(Links) 8 8 8 8 8 8 8

(Web 2.0) article article article article article article article (then link all of these together)

Also if you do link all of these articles together then how many of the other articles do you link to? Like one and the main or more?

What do you think?

Thoughts...

I've been doing the first one, but been doing some more research and it seems like the second one is better. I realized I have 50 articles on Medium and wonder if I would be best served by doing the second way, however I also wonder if I will lose something by doing it this way.

I get very litttle traffic from Medium actually and the same with Youtube despite having 2 million channel views. IDK what's best just asking for input. Thanks.

Should I optimize keywords locally or generically?

This is something I've heard mixed things about. I work in a niche field in the wedding industry. From what I've seen, the terms people probably use to find me are very local and location based. Because of this, these keywords are considered "low volume."

Would I be better off optimizing keywords to be LESS local? Our main keywords optimize towards "the name of our city + what we do." Would we be better off just optimizing for "what we do" and hope that this will have a positive impact on local people based on their location?

How to make best use of all the locations for a local business?

Hi everyone,

I am stuck in a situation and need your help.

I manage a local business based in New Jersey. Our site has done pretty much well since I joined here and we have a lot of organic progress.

Now the problem is we are ranking for some keywords like

______ service in New Jersey Best ______ service in New Jersey

and similar related keywords.

But the issue is we donot rank for keywords like

____ service in Newark/Hoboken etc.

These are basically cities in New Jersey. Most people search for best service in [city name] and not for best service in [state name]

What's the right approach I should take here ?

We have a single office in Newark basically so I cannot build location specific pages because there is not much info to add on them and I donot want the site to look fishy.

Some of our competitors are using canonical with different domains and same content targeting particular cities of state ?

Has anyone had been in a similar scenario before ? Any tips or guidance are appreciated

Concerns about Keyword stuffing

I'm trying to learn SEO and am currently doing so by helping a friend rework their product pages on their company website to help them be more search engine friendly using SEMrush primarily. The company makes products for architectural and construction industry. The problem I'm encountering is writing all of the content I need without using the name of the product over and over again. I'm afraid that google will interpret this as keyword stuffing. For instance, for the page on gates, gate is not my targeted keyword per say--a couple of more specific and descriptive phrases are, but they have the word gate in them. But it's really hard not to have the word gate in almost every sentence because literally all I'm doing is describing gates and the different features of gates and gate options. Do I need to be overly concerned? I have the word gate 16 times in like 525 words of copy.

Also, on Google Images there are still a lot of product images that does not exist now. How to get rid of those? (Although there are a lot less now than a few weeks ago).

Thanks for any tips.

how are people acquiring backlinks to "best x for y" posts?

are these almost always bought links (even if they are legitimate purchases from real websites) because i don't see how anyone would really want to link out to a top 10 list that is just affiliate links

are they getting more links to other info pages and then using that "juice" with internal linking to bump them up?

i even heard a podcast where they would make an info page, get links, then change it to an affiliate page after, kind of a scum move but not something i would prefer doing

Perfect scenario?

You are ranking almost 1st position for all your major keywords. There are not too many others of high search volume you can go after. So it is all about maintaining those top positions.

What do you do?

I have this as my list:

Continue to link build

Create a few interesting articles (but at this point we have a lot of content on the site and there isn’t too much else of interest to write about in this niche - kitchen fitters)

Work on maximising engagement and conversions (sometimes more design based though)

Anything else I could work toward that I might be missing?

SEO Duplicate Content Question

Hello there,

Got a question about duplicate content. Im selling healthcare products on my homepage, amazon and to resellers. Does it count as duplicate content if the texts on amazon and my homepage are the same even tho it's the same product? Also I have noticed that resellers who sell my products through their own online shops also tend to copy my texts. Same question here. Do I get the duplicate content penalty for that?

Thanks in advance!

Help with BuzzStream please

I'm currently doing outreach for a client and the tool says that I've reached my daily limit, even though I haven't yet. I counted. I have 2 normal gmail accounts connected to it. My daily limit currently is 100 because apparently that's the gmail daily limit.

When I try to send an email through BuzzStream, I get a message telling me I've reached my daily limit, and then the send button is replaced with a "send on Aug 29".

I'm 100% sure that I haven't reached my daily limit yet because I counted in my gmail inbox and I only even send 50 emails/day. Please help. Ty
