12 Questions to Ask Yourself if you have been hit with December Core Update!

Many people on Linkedin have been asking about "How they can recover from the update or why it happened to their website" so I created a list of questions that can answer why.

1. Purpose -

What is the purpose of these blog posts? Is it clear to you, the audience and Google?

2. Main Pages vs Blog Pages:

Do they complement the primary pages, or are you trying to rank them on their own?

3. Authority:

Do they showcase your 'authority' on that topic? If YMYL topic, do not go overboard with unsubstantiated claims.

4. Internal Linking:

What is your internal linking strategy? Have you also linked to any authority external sources to substantiate stats or research claims?

5. Clustering:

Are the posts competing with one another or with the primary pages? Are you using a clustering technique or tool to ensure you are utilizing relevant words for maximum impact?

6. Quality of Articles:

How over or under-optimized are these posts? SEO friendly may not be synonymous with high quality.

7. Long is not always better:

Long posts may be a deterrent to your ranking as it is difficult to stretch some topics beyond 1200 words. Google uses algorithms like NLP and BERT to check the depth of the blogs.

8. Images:

Have you thought about taking advantage of Image SEO and YouTube SEO for your blog post's images and video? Take some time to get the metatags, headings & alt attributes in place.

9. Copywriting:

Having written a guide book on blogging & having taught blog writing for college students, it's the storytelling and flow that matters. This is often missing and makes the piece disjointed.

10. Passage Ranking:

Treat each paragraph on its own merit and ensure that the paragraphs flow fluidly. Keep sentences to between 17 - 23 words and tightly edit the article couple of times to remove unneeded words. Reading aloud will show what is missing.

11. Expanding Authority:

When trying to broaden their niche, many affiliates see a drop due to the website not having enough authority in that particular niche. For e.g. If you were always writing about vegan diet and suddenly start talking about KETO, your old blogs will also see a fall.

12. Multiple Authors:

Having multiple authors on the website with no expertise in that field can also be one factor that took away the traffic.

Please do add if I am missing something.
