Looking for a good SEO tool just for KW research

As I posted a couple of days ago, I'm looking to step up my inbound marketing this year for my freelance writing business (note: I don't offer SEO as a service client - this is for my own business development).

I've checked out Moz / SEMRush / Ahrefs (and Frase - recommended in original thread) but feel like, for a rookie like me, these are overkill (Frase is cool but I feel it suggests copying other people's writing). I've put my site through Moz's SEO audit and ironed out most obvious errors (I hope!).

In terms of what I want to set my sights on: lots and lots of content marketing. In terms of what I'm not: backlink-building (don't see much scope for it) and PPC. A reliable keyword research tool would be very useful to me as well as utilities to explore what well-ranking competitors are doing right.

I've been playing around with Mangools this morning and it's the closest thing I've seen to what fits the bill so far. Very easy to use.

Is there anything better or that I should also include in my evaluation? Paid tools are fine. Just looking for something that's as reliable but beginner-friendly as possible.
