SEO changes making things worse

Hi All,

I have a blog and have been working improving my SEO. I have been working on various things with suggestions from various tools, but it’s only seemed to make things worse. Some questions:

1. One of the changes I was working on was adding alt text to my images. Ever since I did that (about a week ago), referrals from Google have been unusually low. Could adding alt text lower Google referrals?
2. I previously didn’t have the ability to add meta tags (since I’ve been using basic Wordpress), but I was previously ranking for multiple searches on Google. I’ve since upgraded to Wordpress business and installed Yost to add meta tags. After I saw my Google referrals dwindling I thought I should add meta tags.I’ve been following the Ubersuggest tool to create meta tags. But, ever since that, it seems my ranking has taken a huge hit. But the oddest thing is Ubersuggest says I’s ranking for a term but a Googling this term doesn’t show the site. Does adding or modifying meta tags reset rankings? Maybe I should avoid Ubersuggest?

Basically each SEO change has seemed to make things worse.

I guess the main question is when working on SEO can changes reset your rankings and hurt your traffic temporarily? If so, should SEO changes all be done in one burst and not over time?
