Matt Cutts from Google, when discussing baclinks stated '...sites that receive multiple backlinks from poor sites, such as spam links, may be seen as untrustworthy'.
I am aware that there are websites set up for the soul purpose of providing backlinks and Google do their best to fish these out. However, if let's say a small time business owner has a website that they created, but due to lack of understanding of SEO they have made numerous mistakes such as poor content, broken links etc., in this scenario, would Google see this as a suspect site? Also if this site was to provide a backlink to another website, would that link carry any authority?
Thanks
