I think I've already got this question answered in my head, but I figured I'd ask for any recent, real-life examples.
Essentially, I have a client who has a pretty image heavy website (to showcase work). At the time I built the site, WordPress was not able to support WEBP natively, but as of 5.8.1, they now can.
I was thinking of doing a sitewide change for the images from JPG to WEBP, but have a few questions.
- Should I just use a converter for fallback images (JPG/PNG)? Most browsers (and recent versions) support the use of WEBP, but do I really care about the boomers still stuck in 2005? Wouldn't think so but interested to hear thoughts.
- Is this likely to affect the rankings in such a dramatic fashion?
I plan on keeping everything the same. Same filename and ALT tags which were set up to follow good practices, just the extension of the image changes.
I imagine this is such a clear cut question but if anyone has been in this boat recently, would love to hear from you.
