Internal Links Structure

There are tons of articles on the "internal links" topic, but I hardly find them covering the structural part. Here, I present the same in terse.

Apart from the header and footer sections, a webpage should consider following points for creating internal link structure:

1) All origin pages

It's good to create a hierarchical links to all the origin pages via breadcrumb. This also helps the user (real and search engines) comprehend the structure of the topic.

2) Parent page

A webpage can have a link to the parent page from within the textual content of the body. This is separate from the breadcrumb. This also helps emphasize the context of the topic in case the user jumps to the subject directly.

3) Child pages

A webpage must link to child pages. This is important so that connections are explicitly stressed from within the body of the page. Also, this helps the user to explore the subject further.

4) Sibling pages

This is an important link in the structure. In a well-structured website, a webpage has links to sibling pages. If there are many siblings, at least link to few as most appropriate to the page.

5) Contextually related pages

Apart from all the above natural linking structure, a page should have contextually links to related pages. For instance, services page -> contact us page.

To summarize, having the above mentioned inter-connections between the webpages helps with a solid internal link structure for the website.

Share your points on the internal links structure.
