Semrush says our homepage keeps bouncing around by 20+ positions at a time

Hey folks,

Recently, I subscribed to Semrush to keep tabs on how well our homepage ranked within the top 10 search results. Signed up for notifications of any rank changes.

I routinely see our rank bounce around dramatically for certain keywords, sometimes high-traffic keywords (300,000+ monthly searches). Recently received a notification that our ranking for a primary keyword just fell from 3 to 25 overnight.

Usually, when there's a dramatic fall like this one, it bounces back within a day or two. My fear is that eventually it won't, and we'll remain in the doldrums of page 2. Does anyone else experience this? Why is this happening, and does it severely impact our SEO?
