Silo on an existing site..bad idea??

Hey all,

As per a recommendation from somewhere here at r/seo, I've been researching the heck out of silo structures and how to properly optimize your onsite hierarchy.

Looks like it could be really beneficial, but I have a couple questions:

1: I have an existing site with 50+ posts. Obviously, I don't want to redo the whole URL structure, so would a virtual silo created solely through internal linking work equally well? What risks are there to this?

2: Following on from Q1, while I'm happy with my post quality, I have a really messy set of categories and pages; can I redo all these without harming rankings?

2: Everyone advises having a static page for the homepage: is it not possible to do a virtual silo with a blogroll?

3: I have a new site that has next to no content, is it worth creating a physical silo for this one?

Thanks for helping me out with this headache! Been scouring the web for resources but all I keep finding is these annoying pictures of colored marbles...
