Changed one word in homepage's title, went from #4 to page 9.... This normal?

(If this is the wrong place to post this question, I apologize)

So, my HP's title was something like:

We're the best X business in Los Angeles!
Located in Los Angeles, California, bla bla bla a....

and I changed it to

We're the best X business in California!
Located in Los Angeles, California, bla bla bla a....

​

Because the search words I want to optimize for are X + California. The word "California" was in the description meta tag, but not in the title.

Changed it, got recrawled, and moved from 4th in those search terms to whatever position page 9 is. Is this normal? Did I screw something up? Really bad timing too...
