Outranking huge web 1.0 site?

I've been approached to take on the creation of an authority site in the form of a partnership. The person who would be my partner is a definite professional in this very specific but traffic heavy niche. He showed me a website that gets about a million views per month. The site was created 20 years ago but has probably not been updated in the last 10 years.

I used screaming frog and see that it has 70K pages. 95% of it is a directory site but its not user sourced content. The site make money by selling listings. Gtmetrix/pingdom show that it has an average speed of 1.2 sec to load but it has critical seo errors. For those 70K pages 99% lack a description, h1, h2, alt tags. It has 7K referring domains.

Is it worth trying to take over this site's piece of the pie? I'm ready to play the long game but how long would this take. Anyone have a strategy for outranking such a huge old site?
