Hi,
I am a junior online marketing manager in a mid-sized agency and one of my fields of work is SEO.
My problem is that I do not know where my role actually fits in here and no one ever exactly told me. We are set up as a full service agency so amongst others we have a design, dev and UX department. Whenever I get the feeling that I should be involved in a project that, in my opinion, touches the SEO subject, no one consults me. For instance for a website relaunch, programming and standard SEO stuff like tags, site structure etc where done either by UX or the developers. The only thing I did was after the whole thing was already launched run some tools, find errors and set up tasks for the other departments - which is part of doing SEO, but whenever I read up on the subject it feels like I should be involved way more.
Plus I also read that a SEO needs knowledge in design, development and UX as well, which I have. However, if we employ experts in those fields, where can I bring in my knowledge in these fields? I am not writing content since we have full time copywriters. I sometimes supply them with research based content ideas which are not always used. I am responsible for web analytics but no one seems to care for data and everyone just sticks to their "gut" basically...
Another problem are clients who do not see any value in SEO and my boss only sells them these small time SEO packages that barely scratch the surface. I can't do any landing page optimizations or supply SEO/Content concepts since they either don't want it or the concept part is again done by some other team. I feel like I should be part of UX and dev meetings but I am not.
I also hate that when the client wants a new website that they do not care about SEO and content. They value design above all else but do not actually think about how people will get on the page, e.g. through organic traffic.
I have no actual senior partner, only my boss, who has not enough time nor the actual deep expertise in these levels.
To me it feels like I am stranded on an island and no one knows how to use my skills and I am wondering how I can get more involved in projects? It feels like the project managers or seniors should know how to use these skills or do I need to make them see and request that they take this more seriously - sounds like an obvious answer but how would I go on and do just that? I am just so frustrated at the moment that every project is just worked out around me...
