2 Questions About Hidden Text & Spam Detection

Hi, I have a WordPress site which I need to optimize for SEO.

The Yeast plug-in demands that I have Category Descriptions longer than 150 chars. (The company doesn't want to change the theme.)

This is too long and consequentially ugly. To remedy this I used the following CSS, which I found online:

.category .taxonomy-description { display: none; }

My 2 questions:

Will hiding the text using this method cause Google spam filters to notice our site, despite the fact it is done solely for aesthetic purposes?

Is the category description actually necessary, or will an adequate meta description suffice?
