Strange Story: Expired Domain 301 Redirect

Like many of you, I'm approached by a lot of SEO freelancers, link builders, etc, to work with one of my larger sites.

But this was a new one: An SEO freelancer wanted to show his skills for free and went ahead and bought an expired domain with backlinks from some big sites like NY Times, BBC, GoodHousekeeping, etc. He redirected the expired domain (which was in my niche) to my site.

Then he emailed me for the first time and told me what he did, saying it was to demonstrate the type of work he could do.

Aside from feeling a little violated, what is the current status of this approach? I know people were doing this quite a bit several years ago as an SEO strategy.

Looks like the linked site expired about 6 years ago, was used for about 4 years for some wonky chinese aesthetician stuff, and then must have expired again.

Should I disavow referral traffic from the expired/redirected domain? Don't want to suffer the wrath of G for something this guy did.
