SEO for interchangeable, similar words

I'm wondering how you deal with SEO when it comes to similar words or words that people use interchangeably.

As a fictitious example, I have a website, backpacks.com that is on the first page of Google for the search "best backpacks". But the website is not well ranked for "best rucksacks". When users search for either a backpack or rucksack, they mean the same thing, so ideally backpacks.com should be on the top for both searches.

Most page titles are in the style of "Best backpacks for hiking - Backpacks.com", "Backpacks in New York - Backpacks.com" and metadescriptions are similar.

What can I do to improve the site's ranking for rucksacks without risking its ranking for backpacks? Thanks.
