Why my rankings fluctuate so much and I am not able to rank well?

I know.

The question is too broad so let me try to narrow it down a little.

I purchased an aged site (domain age is 1.7 years old) that had 10 articles on it. The last article was published in September 2018.

In the past three months I added 12 in-depth articles each 1500+words. The articles are SEO friendly with perfect keyword research and on page SEO. I publish 1 article per week.

I notice that my rankings fluctuate and I am hardly able to rank on page 1 even though I target mainly low competition keywords and my articles are longer and more user-friendly than those of my competitors.

With that being said, I have 2 articles that I wrote that appear on Google page 1.

Here's some other things to consider

  • The niche is competitive
  • The backlink profile of the site is still low.

Here's what I'd like to know if possible:

Is this fluctuation and harsh time ranking normal given the fact that the domain is aged and it should be out of Google Sandbox?

Is there anything special you'd advise me to do in order to improve rankings as fast as possible?

Thanks for the help all!
