Few questions about 301 redirecting of expired domains

Hi,

I have bought an expired domain. It is nothing special, about 5 pages and maybe 15 posts and doesn't have many backlinks. Ahrefs shows it has 4.6 DR

The content on the expired domain is good and highly related to many posts on one of the site I have. That site which I have even after 5 years has no DR according to Ahrefs (made using WordPress). I never did any backlink building there but have at least 30 posts ranging from 1000-2000 words. The site receives almost no traffic but still earns something little to at least pay for hosting and domain renewal.

I decided to test on that site effect of the expired domain and just to test how that process go. Don't intend anything serious to do here.

What would be the best approach?

Let's say the expired domain is expired.com and my existing site is livesite.com

  1. Making 301 redirect of the expired.com to the livesite.com through cPanel. But what about expired domain backlinks which point to its post and pages? They will then result in 404 errors on livesite.com and this is not good if I am not mistaken.

  1. Recreating expired.com from Wayback Machine (all content is available there) and putting it live then redirecting each related post from expired domain to related post on my existing site and non-related content just redirect to the homepage.

The first option is my preferred but don't know if it would have much impact and if it is a proper way to do.

The second option seems the proper way to do things but I am interested will so many redirects cause issue with Google.

Also, what when some expired site has 500 or more pages? Recreating each page and then redirecting to related content on your existing site seems like a lot of work.

I would love to hear how others do this and what is the proper way of doing this.
