Possibly a newbie question - does it make sense from an SEO standpoint to launch a community on an external platform that would be a subdomain when we would much rather prefer it to be a subfolder but it's probably impossible?

To give you a bit of a background, we want to launch a community where our customers and trial users could discuss all sorts of topics related to our product and industry.

The best-case scenario would be those questions/conversations ranking well for their respective keywords so they could drive external traffic at some point.

I know Moz have their community as a subfolder and it seems like they built it internally (without the use of 3 party platforms like Mobilize or Tribe) and some of the threads in their community rank high for their keywords.

Now, I am wondering if it's even possible if we decide to go the subdomain way using either Tribe or Mobilize?
